Campgrounds and RV parks near Tom Bean, TX

Lake Texoma is the main draw. The reservoir spans roughly 89,000 acres on the Red River and is one of the largest Corps of Engineers lakes in the country, with striper fishing, swimming coves, and boat ramps at multiple parks. It is one of the few reservoirs in the nation where striped bass reproduce naturally, along with largemouth, white bass, crappie, and catfish. Eisenhower State Park has hiking and biking trails along limestone bluffs, a swim area, two fishing piers, and a small ATV area near Fossil Ridge. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, on the Texas side of the lake, is a strong stop for waterfowl viewing and wintering bald eagles. Historic sites in Denison and Sherman, including the Eisenhower Birthplace, round out rainy-day options.

North Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are mild but occasionally cold and windy, with January lows near freezing and a first freeze typically in early November. Ice storms are possible but short-lived. Most private RV parks around Tom Bean operate year-round, while many Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Texoma close or reduce services from early October through late March. Spring is the wettest stretch, with April and May producing the heaviest rainfall and the highest severe-thunderstorm risk. Lake levels can rise quickly after heavy rain, and shoreline sites sometimes flood. Wildflowers peak from late March into May. Summer brings hot, humid days, with July and August highs averaging in the low to mid 90s at the lake and heat indices often higher. It is peak boating season and the busiest booking window. Fall, from September through November, is generally the most comfortable period for RV travel, with lower humidity, steady lake access, and reliable trail conditions, though October is often the wettest month of the second half of the year.

Terrain around Tom Bean is gently rolling farmland and post-oak woodland, with limestone bluffs and sandy coves closer to Lake Texoma. Private RV parks in the area generally offer full hookups, level pads, and easy access from US-75 or US-82, which is useful for larger rigs. Corps of Engineers sites on the lake are more rustic, with water and electric hookups at many but not all loops, mostly shaded pads, and lake views on the better sites. Cell coverage is reliable near the highways and in town but can drop in wooded shoreline campgrounds. Grayson County is under a state quarantine restricting the movement of firewood because of emerald ash borer, so plan to buy wood locally. Watch for ticks and chiggers in tall grass from spring through early fall.
