Camping near Van, Texas
Van sits in Van Zandt County in East Texas, roughly 30 miles west of Tyler and about 20 miles east of Canton along Interstate 20. The area is rural and wooded, with rolling hills, farm roads, and small lakes that make it a practical base for RV travelers touring East Texas without the traffic of the Dallas metro.
Most RV parks in the immediate area cater to travelers passing through on I-20 and to shoppers heading to First Monday Trade Days in nearby Canton, held Thursday through Sunday preceding the first Monday of each month, billed as the largest and oldest continually operated flea market in the United States, drawing up to 100,000 shoppers in a weekend. Patriot Escapes RV Resort, Big Tex Campgrounds, and Texas Livin' RV Park serve Van and surrounding communities with full-hookup sites.
Closer to the Canton flea market grounds, Canton RV - Old Mill Marketplace and Mill Creek Ranch RV and Cottage Resort put shoppers within a short drive of the vendor fields. Together these parks cover most rig sizes and stay lengths, from a quick overnight to a full trade-days weekend.
Things to do near Van
The dominant draw is First Monday Trade Days in Canton, a monthly flea market held on the Thursday through Sunday preceding the first Monday of each month. With hundreds of acres to cover, proper planning is essential, and vendors offer antiques, home decor, tools, and food.
Beyond the market, day trips reach Tyler for Tyler State Park, the Caldwell Zoo, and the Tyler Rose Garden. Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork are within a short drive for bass fishing, kayaking, and shoreline picnicking.
Families traveling with kids often combine a Canton shopping day with time at Mineola Nature Preserve, the East Texas Arboretum in Athens, or Purtis Creek State Park for swimming and paddling.

East Texas has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs typically in the 70s Fahrenheit and wildflowers along rural roads in April and May.
Summer brings sustained heat with afternoon highs often in the 90s and high humidity. Shaded, full-hookup sites with strong 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for reliable air conditioning. Thunderstorms are common from May through August, and severe weather including hail and tornadoes is possible in spring.
Winters are generally mild but variable, with occasional nighttime freezes from November through March and rare ice storms. Most private RV parks in the Van and Canton area stay open year-round, and demand spikes every month around the First Monday Trade Days weekend, held Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday, rain or shine, sun-up til sundown.

Booking an RV site near Van
Private parks in and around Van, including Patriot Escapes RV Resort, Big Tex Campgrounds, and Texas Livin' RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Trade Days weekends fill fastest, so booking six to eight weeks ahead is a safe target, and popular months like April and October can require earlier planning.
For sites closest to the market, Canton RV - Old Mill Marketplace and Mill Creek Ranch RV and Cottage Resort book heavily around each monthly market. State park sites in the wider region, such as Tyler State Park and Purtis Creek State Park, are reserved through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system online or by phone, with a rolling five-month booking window that opens at 8:00 AM Central.
What to expect
Expect a mix of paved and gravel pull-through sites at the private parks near Van, with full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi common. Cell coverage along the I-20 corridor is generally strong on major carriers, and grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Van, Canton, and Lindale.
Terrain is gently rolling with mature pines and hardwoods, so shaded sites are frequently available. Insects, including mosquitoes and chiggers, are active from late spring through early fall, and ticks are present in wooded areas.
Traffic on Trade Days weekends can back up on Texas Highway 19 (Trade Days Boulevard) at I-20 Exit 527, particularly Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. Arriving mid-morning Thursday or staying through Sunday evening usually avoids the worst congestion.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Van, TX
How much does an RV rental in Van, TX typically cost?
An RV rental in Van is one of the more affordable ways to explore East Texas. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Van Zandt County area often start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $250 to $400 per night, plus host-set mileage and generator fees. You will save the most by booking Sunday through Thursday and avoiding First Monday Trade Days weekends in nearby Canton, when demand spikes. Pro tip: stationary rentals, where the host delivers and sets up the RV at a campground, are often the cheapest option because you skip the mileage charges entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%2C%20TexasWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Van, TX?
A regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Van for nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal RVs over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), and the vast majority of rentals on the platform fall well below that threshold. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID inside the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home country license and you are set to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my rental protected if something goes wrong on the road?
Yes, and that is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking in Van. Every RVezy booking includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on I-20 or a dead battery at Tyler State Park is just a phone call away from help. During checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your trip, not the host, and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV so you are not on the hook for the full value of the vehicle. For a Texas RV trip it offers genuine peace of mind from pickup to return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Van, TX RV trip?
You can book your RV rental in Van with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, and additional refund options depend on how far out you cancel. Because the policy is handled at the platform level it is consistent for every guest and is not displayed on individual listings. If your plans shift, open your RVezy dashboard or contact support and they will walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Van, TX?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Van and the surrounding Van Zandt County area. Switch on the Pet-Friendly filter when searching RVezy and you will see every rig that welcomes your four-legged co-pilot. Tyler State Park, about 25 miles southeast, allows leashed pets on its trails and in the campground, and the wooded sites near the lake are a hit with dogs who love a swim. Canton's First Monday Trade Days also welcomes leashed pets through most outdoor areas. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fees and deposit details so checkout is smooth.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tylerCan the RV be delivered to my campground or property near Van?
Yes, RV delivery in Van is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters and large family gatherings. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to Tyler State Park, Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton, or a private property, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on the search page and enter the delivery address to see hosts who service Van Zandt and Smith counties. It is a great choice if you would rather skip towing and show up to a campsite that is already set up.

Pro tip: if you are planning a long Van RV trip, filter for unlimited mileage rentals or message the host for a custom mileage package up front.

Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton (around 15 miles west) is a top-rated RV resort with a lazy river and cabins. Mineola Civic Center RV Park (about 25 miles north) offers full hookups and easy rail-trail access. For a quieter stay, try one of the private parks along Lake Fork, famous for trophy bass fishing. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tyler/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Van, TX?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Van is March through May and again from late September through early November, when daytime highs run a comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the Pineywoods show off dogwoods, wildflowers, or fall color. Summer from June to August gets hot and humid with highs in the low to mid 90s, so you will want a rental with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild, often in the 40s to 60s, and underrated for quiet campgrounds and lower rates. Insider tip: book around a Canton First Monday Trade Days weekend in spring and you will catch great weather plus one of the largest flea markets in the country.
weather.gov/fwd/climoI have never driven an RV before. Is it really doable in East Texas?
You will be surprised how quickly it clicks, and East Texas is a great place for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slides, tanks, propane, and dash controls, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. The roads around Van are mostly flat and lightly trafficked outside of I-20, so you can build confidence on FM 16 or US 80 before tackling the freeway. Start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first rent an RV in Van experience, and consider booking delivery so the host handles the driving for you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Understanding-mileage-and-generator-usageWhat if I have a breakdown or emergency during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Van booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 110, a battery issue at Tyler State Park, or a tow off I-20 is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for questions about the quirks of their specific rig. The nearest major medical center is UT Health East Texas in Tyler, about 25 miles south. Save the RVezy support line and your host's number to your phone before pickup and you will be ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Van, TX RV rental across state lines or to Mexico?
Yes, you can cross state lines on most rentals, which makes an RV road trip from Van easy. Popular cross-border routes include Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 280 miles northeast), Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma (around 170 miles north), and Natchitoches, Louisiana (roughly 200 miles east). Always confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking, since some prefer rigs stay within a certain region. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance coverage do not extend across the border. Pro tip: a 5 to 7 day loop through East Texas, the Ouachita Mountains, and back via Caddo Lake is a perfect first big trip from Van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Van, TX?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan for around Van because Texas gas prices typically run below the national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 18 MPG for a truck pulling a travel trailer. A 200-mile round trip to Dallas and back in a Class C will run roughly $55 to $85 in gas at current Texas prices. Fill up at the Buc-ee's in Terrell on I-20, about 25 miles west of Van, for one of the cleanest, easiest fuel stops in the state.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead do I need to book a campground near Van?
For the best campgrounds near Van you will want to book early, especially for weekends. Texas State Parks accepts reservations up to 5 months in advance, and lakeside spots at Tyler State Park can disappear within hours during spring and fall. Reserve through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department site or by calling 512-389-8900. Private parks like Mill Creek Ranch Resort and Canton-area campgrounds during First Monday Trade Days weekends often sell out 2 to 3 months out. Insider tip: weekday stays at Tyler State Park are usually easy to grab even last-minute, so a Tuesday to Thursday family RV trip from Van is a low-stress option.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tyler/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are the local driving conditions like around Van, TX?
Van sits at the crossroads of Interstate 20 and State Highway 110, so getting in and out with a motorhome rental in Van is straightforward. I-20 is a wide, flat freeway that is RV-friendly in both directions, and the back roads through Van Zandt County roll gently through Pineywoods forest with minimal sharp curves. Watch for sudden spring thunderstorms from March through May that can bring high winds, and slow down on FM roads where deer cross at dawn and dusk. Avoid driving through Dallas at rush hour by timing your westbound I-20 run before 7 AM or after 9 AM. Otherwise it is a relaxed driving region.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds around Van?
You will find excellent infrastructure for RV camping in Van. Tyler State Park offers full hookup, water-and-electric, and water-only sites, plus a dump station near the park headquarters and potable water fill stations. Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton has 50-amp full hookups, a lazy river, pool, and on-site laundry. Most private parks in Van Zandt County provide 30 or 50-amp power, fresh water, and sewer at the site. Pro tip: confirm your rental's plug type (30 or 50 amp) at pickup so you bring the right adapter for full-hookup sites.

Larger Class A coaches and fifth wheels often add a washer/dryer, residential fridge, smart TV, and onboard generator. Most listings show photos of every interior feature, including seatbelts, Wi-Fi hotspots, and outdoor kitchens. Filter by sleeps count and amenities on RVezy to find exactly what your crew needs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, so you never hand cash to the host. You pay the booking total (rental, fees, taxes, and your chosen protection level) on a credit or debit card through the secure RVezy checkout. A refundable security deposit is authorized on your card before your trip begins and is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos and videos at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station like the one at Tyler State Park.
