Campgrounds near Van Alstyne, Texas
Van Alstyne sits along US-75 in Grayson County, about an hour north of Dallas and roughly twenty minutes south of Sherman. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of the North Texas metroplex, Lake Texoma, and the small-town corridor running between Anna, Melissa, and McKinney. Most nearby parks cater to travelers using the US-75 corridor as well as long-stay guests working in the region.
Close-in options include Melody Ranch and McWest RV Park, with Good Shepard RV also serving the immediate Van Alstyne area. A short drive south on US-75 leads to Dallas Melissa RV Park and Anna Country RV Ranch, both convenient bases for visiting Collin County attractions while staying outside the busiest Dallas suburbs.
Expect a mix of private, full-hookup RV parks rather than large public campgrounds. For state park camping with lake access, travelers typically drive north to Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma or west toward Ray Roberts Lake State Park.
Things to do near Van Alstyne
Lake Texoma is the biggest regional draw, with boating, striper fishing, and swimming beaches roughly thirty to forty minutes north. Eisenhower State Park offers day-use trails and a marina, while the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on the south shore is a strong pick for birdwatching and quiet drives.
Closer to town, Van Alstyne has a walkable historic Main Street with local restaurants and a seasonal farmers market. Families often day-trip south to McKinney for the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, or to Allen and Frisco for shopping, trampoline parks, and minor-league sports.
Golfers have several public courses within a short drive, and the surrounding backroads suit cycling and motorcycle touring on flat to gently rolling terrain.

North Texas has a long RV season, but spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. From late March through May, daytime highs sit in the seventies, wildflowers bloom along roadsides, and lake levels are typically strong. This is also the peak severe-weather season, with a real risk of thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes, so travelers should monitor forecasts and choose parks with sturdy hookups.
Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon highs frequently in the mid-nineties and heat indices higher. Air-conditioned rigs, shaded sites, and early-morning outdoor plans become essential. Lake Texoma is busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and holiday weekends fill quickly.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and generally settled weather from late September into November. Winters are mild by national standards but can turn briefly harsh, with occasional freezes, ice storms, and short cold snaps that affect water hookups and travel on area highways.

How to book campgrounds near Van Alstyne
Private RV parks in the Van Alstyne, Anna, and Melissa area generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Some also list availability on third-party platforms. For weekends between April and October, booking four to eight weeks ahead is a safe target, and holiday weekends can fill earlier.
Texas State Parks, including Eisenhower and Ray Roberts, use the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system, which opens sites up to five months in advance on a rolling basis at 8 a.m. Central. Federal campgrounds around Lake Texoma operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers are booked through Recreation.gov, typically on a six-month rolling window.
Confirm rig-length limits, hookup amperage, and pet rules at the time of booking, and ask about monthly rates if planning an extended stay.
What to expect at Van Alstyne-area campgrounds
Most parks in this corridor are flat, gravel or concrete-pad properties designed for full-hookup RV use rather than tent camping. Expect thirty and fifty amp service, city water, sewer, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Shade trees exist but are not guaranteed, so bring awnings and sunshades for summer stays.
Road noise from US-75 and nearby rail lines is common at properties close to the highway. Sites near Anna, Melissa, and Van Alstyne tend to attract a mix of traveling guests and longer-term residents working in the Dallas metroplex, so parks often feel more like small communities than resort destinations.
Grocery stores, fuel, propane, and RV service are easy to find along the US-75 corridor, and Sherman and McKinney both have full-service medical facilities.

An RV rental in Van Alstyne is one of the more affordable ways to explore North Texas. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches starting near $250. Because Van Alstyne sits just off US-75 between Sherman and McKinney, there are plenty of host options without big-city markups. Looking for a cheap RV rental in Van Alstyne? Book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), travel in the shoulder months of March, April, or October, and consider older travel trailers, which often deliver the best value. Many hosts also offer weekly discounts of 10 to 15 percent for longer Texoma getaways.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%20Alstyne%2C%20TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Van Alstyne?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Texas driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Van Alstyne. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, even the larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified securely through the platform when you book, so there's no awkward paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside North America? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-timers are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward it is to roll out of Van Alstyne ready for adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Van Alstyne with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that fits your comfort level and budget. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if there's an incident on US-75, at Lake Texoma, or anywhere your Texas adventure takes you. Review the coverage tiers carefully at booking, especially if you're newer to driving a motorhome rental in Van Alstyne, and consider the higher tier for extra confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Van Alstyne RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the exact terms that apply to your trip are clearly shown during checkout so there are no surprises. If a host cancels, RVezy works with renters to provide a refund or travel credit. If life happens or severe weather disrupts your North Texas plans, RVezy support reviews qualifying situations on a case-by-case basis. To make the most of the policy, book early to lock in your preferred dates and rig (especially for popular Lake Texoma weekends), and review the cancellation terms shown at checkout before confirming.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Van Alstyne?
Absolutely. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Van Alstyne are ready to welcome your four-legged co-pilot. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who accept dogs (and sometimes cats). Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown upfront on the listing. Van Alstyne is a great base for pet travel: Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma allows leashed dogs on most trails, and there are additional dog-friendly trails at Ray Roberts Lake State Park to the west. Pack a collapsible water bowl and a cooling mat for summer trips. North Texas heat can climb past 100°F in July, so morning walks and shaded campsites keep tails wagging.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhowerCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway?
Yes. RV delivery in Van Alstyne is one of the best perks on RVezy, especially if you're new to towing or want to skip the learning curve. Many local hosts will deliver your RV directly to Eisenhower State Park, Ray Roberts Lake State Park, a family member's driveway in Sherman or McKinney, or even your event venue. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything from the awning to the toilet. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host, and the cost is shown transparently before you book. Filter for Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your exact address so they can confirm the fee and arrival window.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%20Alstyne%2C%20TexasHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Van Alstyne?
You've got a huge playground within easy reach of Van Alstyne. Lake Texoma is about 30 miles north, Dallas is roughly 60 miles south, Tyler and the Piney Woods are about 110 miles southeast, Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma is roughly 150 miles east, and Austin is a doable 240 miles south for a longer RV road trip from Van Alstyne. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles) with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. If you're planning a bigger loop through Texas Hill Country or Hot Springs, Arkansas, message the host before booking to discuss a mileage package. Many are happy to bundle extra miles into the nightly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%20Alstyne%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Van Alstyne?
You're spoiled for choice with great RV camping near Van Alstyne. Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma (about 30 minutes north) offers water and electric hookup sites, a swim beach, and bluff-top views. Ray Roberts Lake State Park (Isle du Bois unit, about 45 minutes west) has shaded sites with hookups in a beautiful post oak forest. Lake Lavon's Corps of Engineers parks are about 35 minutes south and great for fishing. For something closer, private RV parks in Sherman are just 15 minutes up US-75 with full hookups. Texas state parks open reservations five months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and Lake Texoma weekends fill fast, so book the moment your window opens.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhowerWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Van Alstyne?
The sweet spot for an RV trip in Van Alstyne is mid-March through late May, and again from mid-September through early November. Spring brings wildflowers (including the famous Texas bluebonnets along the roadsides), temperatures in the 65 to 80°F range, and milder storm activity than peak severe weather season. Fall delivers crisp 60 to 75°F days, lower humidity, and great lake conditions at Texoma. Summer (June to August) is hot, often 90 to 100°F, but RVs with strong air conditioning and lakeside campsites make it very doable. Winters are mild with highs in the 50s and occasional cold snaps. Book a March trip to catch the bluebonnet bloom along nearby Highway 56, an only-in-Texas photo op.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and Van Alstyne is one of the easiest places to start. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, run the slide-outs, dump tanks, manage propane, and connect at the campground. You can ask any question with zero judgment, and you'll have the host's number throughout your trip. The terrain around Van Alstyne is flat and open, US-75 is a wide, well-maintained corridor, and rural roads have plenty of room to get comfortable. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Van Alstyne or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer for your first trip. They're easier to maneuver and park than the larger Class A coaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003066034-Renting-an-RVWhat if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you've got a flat on US-75, a dead battery at Eisenhower State Park, or a stuck slide-out at midnight, help is one phone call away. Your host is typically just a text away for quick troubleshooting (they know their RV better than anyone), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Van Alstyne, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate. It speeds up dispatch if you ever need a tow or tire service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive a Van Alstyne RV rental into Oklahoma or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Van Alstyne, which makes sense since the Oklahoma border is only about 25 miles north across Lake Texoma. Popular cross-state routes include Broken Bow and the Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, and destinations to the east in Louisiana. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage don't extend across that border. Message your host through the listing before booking to share your route so they can confirm mileage and any trip-specific notes. Many North Texas hosts are seasoned road-trippers themselves and love helping plan an epic RV road trip from Van Alstyne.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel costs should I budget for?
Plan smart and your fuel bill won't be a shock. Class C motorhomes around Van Alstyne typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches get 6 to 9 MPG, campervans (Class B) get 14 to 20 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer averages 10 to 13 MPG. Gas in the Van Alstyne and Sherman area is usually close to or slightly below the Texas state average, and Buc-ee's in Denison is just 20 miles north with competitive fuel prices and large pull-through bays. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in gas depending on current prices. Fill up before leaving Van Alstyne, as prices can rise closer to Lake Texoma marinas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Van Alstyne?
For the best sites around Van Alstyne, plan ahead but don't stress. Texas state parks (including Eisenhower and Ray Roberts) release campsite reservations up to five months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and lakefront sites for summer weekends often book within minutes of opening. US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Lake Texoma open about six months out on Recreation.gov. Private RV parks usually have more flexibility, often available within a week of your trip. For spring break and Memorial Day weekend, set a calendar alert for exactly five months out at 8 a.m. Central. That's when serious Texas campers strike, and it's the difference between a waterfront site and the back row.
texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Van Alstyne?
Driving an RV around Van Alstyne is refreshingly mellow compared to most Texas metros. US-75 is a wide multi-lane corridor with generous shoulders and easy on-ramps, and the rural FM roads east and west are flat, open, and lightly trafficked. Watch for sudden thunderstorms in spring (April and May are peak severe weather months in North Texas), and keep an eye on wind advisories. Crosswinds across the open prairie can push tall rigs around. If you're heading south into Dallas, avoid I-635 and Central Expressway at rush hour (roughly 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.). Check DriveTexas.org for live road conditions, construction alerts, and weather closures before any RV camping in Van Alstyne adventure.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at local campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure at campgrounds near Van Alstyne. Eisenhower State Park offers 30/50-amp electric and water at most sites (no sewer at the site, but a dump station is on-site). Ray Roberts Lake State Park has loops with water and electric, plus some full hookup sites with 50-amp service in select areas. Lake Texoma's Corps of Engineers parks like Juniper Point and Preston Bend offer water and electric plus dump stations. Private parks in the Sherman area provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Potable water fill stations are available at every state park entrance. Bring a 25-foot drinking water hose, a 30-to-50 amp adapter, and a sewer hose support. These basics aren't always included with your rental and make the difference between a smooth setup and a frustrating one.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lakeWhat's inside the typical RV rental in Van Alstyne?
You'll be comfortable from day one. Most RV rentals in Van Alstyne come fully equipped: a real bed (queen or king in many rigs), a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, climate control with AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, an outdoor awning, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot, while others recommend you bring your own. Check the listing's amenity list carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet, a portable crib, or extra bedding. North Texas hosts are known for being accommodating with little extras.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%20Alstyne%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
You can customize your Van Alstyne RV rental with handy add-ons that hosts offer right in the listing: linens and bedding packages (often $30 to $75), kitchen kits, camping chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, and even pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home or an agreed meeting point in Van Alstyne, Sherman, or McKinney, and includes a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough so you leave feeling confident. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts including 100 to 150 free miles per day and charging roughly $0.30 to $0.50 per mile beyond that. Bundle delivery with a linen and kitchen kit for your first trip. Showing up to a ready-made, fully stocked RV at the lake feels like cheating, in the best way.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Van%20Alstyne%2C%20TexasHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay directly through RVezy with a credit card when you book (no cash, no transfers to the host), and your booking total is clearly itemized: nightly rate, taxes, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before your trip, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing, and it's released after the host confirms the rig was returned in good condition (usually within a few days of trip end). Do a thorough video walkaround of the RV with your host at pickup and drop-off, inside and out. It takes five minutes, protects everyone, and is the single best way to help ensure your security deposit comes back fast and in full.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Van Alstyne in the winter?
Yes. Winter RV rentals in Van Alstyne are absolutely doable and often a well-kept secret of North Texas camping. Winters here are mild with daytime highs typically in the 50s and 60s°F, lows around 35 to 40°F, and only a handful of hard freezes per year. Many hosts keep their rigs available year-round and include propane furnaces, and some have heated holding tanks for occasional cold snaps. Eisenhower State Park stays open all winter with quieter sites and bald eagle sightings along Lake Texoma in January and February. Ask your host to top off the propane and walk you through the furnace and tank heaters at pickup. A cozy, crowd-free lakeside campsite in February is one of the best-value RV camping in Van Alstyne experiences you'll ever have.
