Campgrounds and RV parks near Waskom, TX

Caddo Lake State Park is the anchor attraction. Visitors can launch a boat, fish, paddle, hike, picnic, or stay in a historic CCC-built cabin, and the lake supports a diverse fishery along with alligators, waterfowl, osprey, and eagles. Canoe rentals are available at the park office, and experienced paddlers can venture onto the Hell's Half Acre Paddling Trail. The historic town of Jefferson, southwest of the lake, works well as a day trip for shops, restaurants, and steamboat-era history. Alligators live in the park, so families should review the park's guidance before wading or letting pets near the water. East of Waskom, Shreveport and Bossier City add riverboat casinos, museums, and family dining within a short drive from any of the interstate campgrounds.

The Caddo Lake area follows a humid subtropical pattern with a long busy season. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists March through November as the busy period at Caddo Lake State Park, and staff note the park often reaches capacity, so reservations for both camping and day use are strongly recommended. Spring brings mild temperatures and one of the wettest stretches of the year, with monthly rainfall commonly exceeding 5 inches. Wildflowers and cypress leaf-out peak from late March into May. Summers are hot and humid, with July highs averaging near 88 degrees, and biting insects are heavy around the bayou, so bug spray is essential. Early fall typically trends drier and is a comfortable window for RV travel. Winter is short and generally mild, with the first freeze occurring around mid-November and the last freeze around mid-March. Most private RV parks in the area, including the Shreveport-area KOAs, operate year-round, while state-park cabins and some facilities may have scheduled closures for maintenance.

Interstate campgrounds near Waskom are set up for easy in-and-out travel. KOA locations in the Shreveport area typically offer full-hookup pull-throughs with 30- and 50-amp service, laundry, propane, and a dump station, and sites can feel close together on busy travel weekends. Caddo Lake State Park is a different experience. Sites sit under towering bald cypress draped with Spanish moss, and campers should expect abundant mosquitoes and alligators in park waterways. The park has no entrance gate, and late arrivals must call the park by 4:45 p.m. on the day of arrival to be added to the late-arrival list. Harrison County is under a Texas Department of Agriculture emerald ash borer quarantine, which restricts movement of hardwood firewood out of the county, so campers should buy firewood locally and burn it on site.
