Campgrounds and RV parks near Whitesboro, TX

Lake Texoma is the main draw. Anglers target striped bass, which reproduce naturally in the reservoir and give the lake its nickname as the Striper Capital of the World, along with largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish. Marinas offer boat rentals, guided fishing, and slip access for RV travelers who tow a boat. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, on the Big Mineral Arm of the lake northwest of Sherman, is open dawn to dusk with no admission fee. Visitors can drive the auto tour route along the shoreline, hike trails such as Harris Creek, Meadow Pond, and Haller's Haven, and watch for hundreds of recorded bird species, plus white-tailed deer and bald eagles. The scenic Cross Timbers hiking trail winds for about 14 miles above the lake through blackjack woodland and rocky ledges, and roughly 40 miles of equestrian trails are available around the reservoir.

The peak recreation season at Lake Texoma runs April 1 through September 30. During those months, Corps of Engineers campgrounds are fully staffed, entrance gates open at 6 a.m. and lock at 10 p.m., and park attendants collect fees on site. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, so reservable sites at Corps parks and popular private resorts should be booked well in advance. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating shorebirds, and the heaviest rainfall of the year, with May typically the wettest month. Thunderstorms can be severe, and lake levels sometimes rise quickly after prolonged rain, occasionally closing lakeside sites and boat ramps. Many Corps-managed campgrounds close for the winter on October 1 and reopen April 1. Campgrounds that remain open during the off-season are first come, first served with limited or no access to amenities, and self-deposit honor vaults handle fee collection. Winters are generally mild, making it a quieter option for self-contained RVs.

Terrain around Lake Texoma varies from flat, sandy beach areas to elevated rocky shorelines, and campgrounds typically mix wooded and open sites. Shade trees are common at Corps parks, which helps in the North Texas summer heat. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, so waterfront sites can shift in character after heavy rain. Private parks along U.S. 82 near Whitesboro cater primarily to RVs, with level pull-throughs, full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi typical. Corps parks generally offer water and electric hookups but fewer resort amenities, trading services for lake frontage, boat ramps, and swim beaches. Summer temperatures routinely reach the 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, so plan for early-morning outings, sun protection, and reliable air conditioning. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the highway corridor but can thin out inside the wildlife refuge and on the more remote arms of the lake.
