Campgrounds and RV parks near Wolfe City, TX

Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Bonham is a 1,020-acre recreation destination in the Prairies and Lakes Region of northern Texas, in Fannin County, with a double wide launch ramp, an enclosed heated and cooled event center, an open pavilion, a public beach for swimming, a fishing dock, a playground, and biking and hiking trails. Anglers commonly target crappie, and kayaks work well in the sheltered coves. History stops sit within an easy drive. Bonham was the home of Sam Rayburn, the longest-running U.S. Speaker of the House, and the Sam Rayburn House state historic site is in town, with the Eisenhower Birthplace state historic site in nearby Denison. Bonham State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, adds hiking trails and a smaller lake south of town. Greenville, Commerce, and Sherman supply groceries, fuel, laundromats, and RV service shops within roughly a half-hour drive.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of North Texas. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers, and the highest concentration of severe thunderstorms and tornado activity in the region, so travelers should monitor National Weather Service alerts and choose parks with sturdy hookup pedestals and clear evacuation routes. September through November delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable lake access before winter slows the pace. Summer is hot. The July average high in the Bonham area is 95 degrees, and humid nights rarely drop below the mid-70s Fahrenheit. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for air-conditioning load. Winter is mild by national standards but not consistent. Occasional Arctic outbreaks push lows into the teens Fahrenheit and can bring freezing rain that disrupts travel for a day or two. Many private parks stay open year-round, but some lakeside amenities operate on reduced hours.

Roads into Wolfe City and the surrounding farm-to-market network are paved and generally easy for a rented Class C or travel trailer, though shoulders are narrow in places and cellular coverage can dip between towns. Fuel and propane are more reliably found in Greenville and Bonham than in Wolfe City itself. Expect open, prairie-style sites with limited natural shade at most parks and a mix of gravel and grass pads. At Lake Bonham Recreation Area, sites feature electric and water hookups though some visitors report inconsistent sewer availability, the campground maintains restrooms, showers, and a dump station, and several reviewers mention water moccasins active around the water's edge at night. Ticks and chiggers are active from spring through early fall, and mosquito pressure rises after wet weeks.
