Campgrounds near Hardwick, Vermont
Hardwick sits in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, roughly halfway between Montpelier and St. Johnsbury, and functions as a practical base for RV trips into the Green Mountains and Groton State Forest. The surrounding towns of Woodbury, Calais, Elmore, and Marshfield hold a mix of small private campgrounds and Vermont state park campgrounds, most within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Closest to town, Woodbury Meadows Campground offers a small site with limited RV hookups on wooded acreage in the Woodbury area. Meadowcrest Campground and Mountain View Campground provide additional private options in the Morrisville and Lamoille River area, with Mountain View sitting along the Lamoille River with full hookups.
For state park camping, Elmore State Park on Lake Elmore and New Discovery State Park inside Groton State Forest are the two main choices within reach. Both are managed by Vermont State Parks, offer tent/RV sites and lean-tos, and use the same reservation system. Neither state park provides hookups, but both have dump stations.
Things to do around Hardwick
Lake Elmore anchors the day-use experience at Elmore State Park, with a sandy swimming beach, cartop boat launch, and rentals for canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards at the Beach House. Two trails climb Elmore Mountain to its 2,608-foot summit, where a restored fire tower offers panoramic views across the Worcester Range.
Groton State Forest, accessed from New Discovery State Park, covers over 26,000 acres and links seven state parks by trail. Osmore Pond offers paddling, brown trout fishing, and remote walk-in lean-tos, and dedicated horse camping is available at New Discovery with corrals, water spigots, and a horse-washing station.
The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and the Cross Vermont Trail (including the Montpelier-Wells River Rail Trail through Groton) both pass near the area, giving cyclists long, low-grade rides straight from several campgrounds.

Vermont state park campgrounds in this region run on a short season. Elmore State Park and New Discovery State Park typically open the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and close the second Monday in October, with no developed-site camping through the winter. Private campgrounds nearby follow a similar window, generally running from spring through mid to late fall.
July and August are peak, with warm days, lake swimming, and heavy weekend demand on limited RV-suitable sites. Late September and early October bring foliage traffic, and sites near Groton State Forest and Lake Elmore book out well in advance for that stretch. Bug pressure from blackflies and mosquitoes is heaviest from late May into June, and Vermonters refer to the raw, wet stretch before that as mud season.
Winter closes the developed campgrounds but not the forest. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hunting continue on state land around Elmore and Groton, though RV access is not available at the state park campgrounds during this period.
How to book
Elmore State Park and New Discovery State Park both reserve through the Vermont State Parks system. Reservations can be made online at the Vermont State Parks reservation site, by calling the Reservation Call Center at 1-888-409-7579 on weekdays, or by contacting the park directly during the operating season. Booking opens on a rolling 11-month window, with new arrival dates releasing daily at 9 a.m. Reservations made more than seven days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within seven days of arrival.
Same-day reservations can be made up to 2 p.m. on the day of arrival, and drive-in campers may find open sites midweek, though the parks do not hold sites specifically for walk-ins.
Private campgrounds such as Woodbury Meadows Campground, Meadowcrest Campground, and Mountain View Campground are booked directly with the operator through their own website or a listing platform. Small properties with only a handful of sites should be booked well ahead for summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Most campgrounds in this area lean rustic. Vermont state park sites at Elmore and New Discovery have no water, electric, or sewer hookups at the site, but both parks have flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, drinking water spigots, and an RV sanitary dump station. Elmore has 44 tent/RV sites and 15 lean-tos on two loops; sites vary in privacy, with lean-to loops more open than the wooded tent/RV loops.
Private options fill different needs. Mountain View Campground along the Lamoille River offers full-hookup sites, while Woodbury Meadows is small and quiet with limited RV capacity.
Out-of-state firewood is restricted at Vermont state parks unless it is packaged, heat-treated, and certified by the USDA or another state's agriculture department, so it is easiest to buy on site. Cell service is unreliable in Groton State Forest and parts of Calais and Woodbury, so download maps before arrival.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hardwick, VT?
An RV rental in Hardwick is one of the more affordable ways to explore Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervan rentals in Hardwick generally run $125 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhome rentals trend $175 to $300. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hardwick%2C%20VermontDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hardwick, Vermont?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hardwick, Vermont. Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License for personal motorhomes under 26,000 lbs, which covers virtually every Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhome on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how simple the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Hardwick protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Hardwick booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps with most damage to the vehicle, which removes a huge worry for first-time renters exploring back roads around the Northeast Kingdom. You choose your level of coverage during checkout, not the host, so you can pick what feels right for your trip, whether you're doing a quick weekend at Caspian Lake or a longer Vermont RV trip up to Jay Peak. It's built-in peace of mind on every booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hardwick RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every rental, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking, so you can lock in your rig with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. You'll see the full cancellation details on the RVezy site before you confirm. Book early for fall foliage season in Hardwick, then relax knowing the policy has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hardwick RV trip?
Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Hardwick are ready for your pup. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome dogs, then message the host to confirm any size or breed notes. Vermont is famously dog-loving, and you'll find leashed pets welcome at nearby spots like Elmore State Park (about 20 minutes south) and along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, which runs right through Hardwick. Caspian Lake in Greensboro is a favorite for a post-hike dog swim. Pack a towel and a collapsible water bowl for the trail, and plan around Vermont's muddy April conditions.
vtstateparks.com/elmore.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Hardwick?
Yes, RV delivery in Hardwick is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at places like Brewster River Campground in Jeffersonville or a private site near town, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see the delivery fee, which is usually based on mileage from the host. Pair delivery with a stationary stay near Caspian Lake for a true zero-stress Vermont RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hardwick%2C%20VermontHow far can I drive on a typical RV rental from Hardwick?
Hardwick is a perfect launchpad for a Vermont RV road trip. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per night), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which you can filter for on RVezy. From Hardwick you're about 30 miles to Stowe, 40 miles to Burlington, 55 miles to Jay Peak, 65 miles to Lake Willoughby, and around 35 miles to Montpelier. If you're planning a longer loop through the White Mountains or down to the Adirondacks, message the host before booking to add extra miles upfront, which is almost always cheaper than paying overage at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hardwick%2C%20VermontWhere are the best campgrounds near Hardwick, VT?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Hardwick include Elmore State Park (about 20 minutes south on Lake Elmore, with a sandy beach and a historic fire tower), Groton State Forest's Stillwater and Big Deer campgrounds (around 45 minutes southeast, set in 26,000+ acres of forest and ponds), and Brewster River Campground in Jeffersonville (about 40 minutes west near Smugglers' Notch). For lakeside RV camping near Hardwick, Caspian Lake in nearby Greensboro is hard to beat for swimming and paddling. Vermont State Parks open reservations 11 months out, so popular July and August weekends fill quickly.
vtstateparks.com/groton.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Hardwick?
Hardwick shines from late May through mid-October. Summer (June to August) brings warm 75 to 82 degree F days, cool 50s at night, swimmable lakes, and full campground services. Late September through the first week of October is the legendary Vermont foliage window, when the Northeast Kingdom turns scarlet and gold and Hardwick's hills glow. Winter RV rentals are possible too, with snowshoeing and skiing at nearby Stowe and Jay Peak, just look for four-season rigs with heated tanks. Book your foliage rental by July, since the last two weeks of September into early October are the busiest weeks of the year in the Northeast Kingdom.
weather.gov/btv/I'm a first-time renter. Will I actually know how to use the RV?
Yes, and you'll feel surprisingly confident by the end of pickup. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough of the rig, covering water, propane, the generator, slide-outs, the awning, and dump procedures, plus tips for driving Vermont's hilly Route 15 and Route 14 around Hardwick. You can message the host beforehand with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a tap away if you get stuck. For your first time renting an RV, do a short test drive in a wide, quiet parking area in Hardwick before heading out, and ask the host to film a quick video walkthrough you can replay at your campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Hardwick RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 15 outside Wolcott or a dead battery at a Groton State Forest campsite is a quick phone call away from help. The roadside team can dispatch a tow, tire change, jump start, or fuel delivery anywhere in the Hardwick area and across Vermont. Keep your host's number handy too, since they know their RV best and can troubleshoot quirks. Cell service can be spotty in the Northeast Kingdom hills, so download offline maps and save key numbers before leaving town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hardwick RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and multi-state trips from Hardwick are very doable with a little planning. Travel into New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Massachusetts is generally allowed, making for fantastic RV road trips from Hardwick to the White Mountains, Acadia, or the Adirondacks. For Canada (the Quebec border is only about 50 miles north), many hosts allow it, but you must confirm with your host before booking so cross-border documentation can be arranged. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. If you're heading to Canada, carry your passport or Enhanced Driver's License, the RV registration, written host permission, and budget extra time at the Derby Line crossing.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hardwick RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Vermont gas prices typically sit slightly above the national average for regular unleaded in the Hardwick area. There are convenient fuel stops in town on Route 15, plus larger truck-friendly stations in Morrisville (about 15 miles west) that fit big rigs easily. Fill up in Morrisville before heading deeper into the Northeast Kingdom, where stations are fewer and prices can be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground around Hardwick?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Vermont State Parks like Elmore and Groton open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends and all of foliage season book fast. Private campgrounds near Hardwick, such as Brewster River, typically open bookings 6 to 12 months out. For a spontaneous trip, midweek sites in June or early September are usually wide open. If you strike out on a campground, ask your RVezy host about Harvest Hosts or Boondockers Welcome locations near Hardwick, including a few local farms and craft cideries that welcome self-contained RVs overnight.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Hardwick?
Driving an RV around Hardwick is very manageable, just expect classic Vermont country roads. The main routes (VT-15, VT-14, and VT-16) are two-lane paved highways with rolling hills, occasional spring frost heaves, and long sightlines. Avoid narrow Class 4 dirt roads, which are common in surrounding hill towns and not RV-friendly. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk, especially north toward Craftsbury and Greensboro. In winter, VTrans plows main roads quickly, but patience and proper tires are smart. Skip Smugglers' Notch (VT-108 between Stowe and Jeffersonville) in any motorhome, the switchbacks are restricted to vehicles over a certain length and tractor-trailers and large RVs are prohibited.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/traveler-infoWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Hardwick?
Most campgrounds around Hardwick offer the essentials you need for a great stay. Vermont State Parks like Elmore and Groton have potable water fill stations, dump stations, hot showers, and a mix of tent and RV sites, though state parks generally do not offer hookups at sites. Private parks like Brewster River typically offer 30 and 50-amp service, water, and sewer hookups. The closest reliable dump stations to downtown Hardwick are at Elmore State Park and Groton State Forest. Bring a 50-to-30 amp adapter and a 25-foot drinking water hose, you'll use both.
vtstateparks.com/camping.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Hardwick?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Hardwick comes fully equipped with comfortable beds (queen size in most Class Cs), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs include a TV, many have a generator or solar for off-grid stays, and a growing number offer cellular Wi-Fi boosters, which is a real help in the Northeast Kingdom's spotty-signal zones. Smaller campervan rentals in Hardwick are cozier but include the essentials. Check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a coffee maker, car seat anchors, or a backup camera.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hardwick%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons can I get with my Hardwick RV rental?
Plenty, and the right add-ons make your trip way easier. Common host add-ons in the Hardwick area include delivery and setup (often a per-mile fee from the host), generator hours, propane refills, linen and kitchen kits, bike racks, camp chairs and tables, and even fishing gear for nearby Caspian Lake or the Lamoille River. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's address in or near Hardwick, with most hosts offering a 1 to 2 hour orientation window. Mileage allowances typically run 100 to 150 miles per day, and you can use the unlimited-mileage filter on RVezy if you're planning a big Vermont loop. Add extra miles at booking, they're cheaper upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hardwick%2C%20VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash changing hands with the host, which keeps everything traceable and protected. The security deposit is a separate pre-authorization hold (not a charge) placed on your card before pickup and released after a clean drop-off. Deposit amounts vary by RV class and listing. To avoid issues: do a thorough video walkthrough at pickup, return the rig clean, refill propane and fuel to the agreed level, and dump tanks at a local dump station before drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hardwick during the winter for ski trips?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Hardwick can be a blast if you pick the right rig. Look for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces, then filter listings or message hosts to confirm. Hardwick puts you within easy reach of Stowe Mountain Resort (about 30 miles), Jay Peak (55 miles), and Burke Mountain (35 miles), so a base-camp RV setup at a winter-open park or a plowed private site is a fun alternative to a slope-side hotel. You'll want shore power (a 30 or 50-amp hookup) to keep things warm. Skirting the RV with foam board and topping off propane every 2 to 3 days keeps your January Northeast Kingdom adventure cozy.
