Campgrounds near Milton, Vermont
Milton sits in northwestern Vermont along the Lamoille River, roughly 15 miles north of Burlington and a short drive from the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. The location puts RV travelers within reach of both lakefront state park camping and full-hookup private resorts, with I-89 providing direct access from Montreal, Boston, and points south.
Most campgrounds in the area cluster around Malletts Bay in Colchester and the Champlain Islands to the west. Lone Pine Campsites in Colchester sits a short drive from Malletts Bay and about 15 minutes from downtown Burlington, with 265 sites surrounded by native trees. Maple Grove Campground and Malletts Bay Campground offer additional options closer to the bay itself.
Across the Sand Bar causeway, the Champlain Islands hold Apple Island Resort in South Hero and Grand Isle State Park a few miles further north. Grand Isle is the most-visited campground in the Vermont state park system, with 4,150 feet of Lake Champlain shoreline that attracts both destination campers and one-night travelers passing through on US Route 2.
Things to do near Milton
Lake Champlain drives most of the recreation in the area. Swimming beaches, a boat launch, kayak rentals, and fishing for a variety of species are available at Grand Isle State Park. Apple Island Resort adds a marina, a 9-hole par-3 golf course, and a heated pool with a poolside hot tub for guests who prefer to stay on property.
Day-trip options are plentiful. Burlington's waterfront, Church Street Marketplace, and the Ben and Jerry's factory tour in Waterbury are all within an hour. The surrounding area gives campers easy access to local farms, breweries, a winery, and farmers markets, and the back roads of South Hero and Grand Isle are well-suited to cyclists.
Closer to Milton, Niquette Bay State Park offers hiking and a quieter shoreline, and the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail provides a flat multi-use path for biking.

The Vermont camping season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Apple Island Resort operates from May 1 through October 20, and most Vermont State Parks including Grand Isle follow a similar mid-May to mid-October window. Lone Pine Campsites runs a comparable early-May to mid-October season.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Reserving well in advance is advisable for holiday periods and prime lakeside locations, and waterfront sites fill quickly during peak season. July and August bring warm days ideal for swimming in Lake Champlain, plus the highest demand for lakefront sites and lean-tos.
September and early October are the shoulder-season sweet spot: fewer crowds, cooler nights, and Vermont's foliage peak in late September and early October across the northern part of the state. Winter camping is not offered at these lakefront properties; sites close and services shut down once temperatures drop and Lake Champlain begins to freeze.
How to book campgrounds near Milton
Vermont State Parks run through a single central reservation system. Under the policy that took effect in early 2026, reservations open daily on a rolling 11-month window at 9 a.m., meaning each date becomes available exactly 11 months before arrival. Bookings can be made online, by phone, or by contacting the park directly.
Minimum-stay rules apply at Grand Isle State Park. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. Same-day reservations are accepted until 2 p.m.
Private parks book directly. Apple Island Resort uses Campspot, and Lone Pine Campsites, Maple Grove Campground, and Malletts Bay Campground take reservations through their own websites or by phone. For peak summer weekends and any July or August lakefront site, book several months out.
What to expect at campgrounds near Milton
Site type varies sharply between state park and private options. Grand Isle State Park has 4 rental cabins, 115 tent/RV sites, 36 lean-tos, restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water, and coin-operated showers, plus an RV sanitary station but no hookups. RV travelers who need power and sewer will want a private park instead.
Lone Pine Campsites provides several RV hook-up options, RV rentals, and welcomes tent campers, with sports courts, a stocked camp store, Wi-Fi, two swimming pools, and laundry facilities on site. Apple Island Resort offers leveled full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, Wi-Fi, and lake and mountain views.
Expect black flies in late May and June, cool nights even in midsummer, and a strict rule against bringing outside firewood. Firewood should not be brought into Vermont state parks from outside the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated.

The State of Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License or special endorsement to operate a personal motorhome or tow a travel trailer, even larger Class A rigs. To book on RVezy, you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification is handled through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Milton RV trip plans change?
You can book your Milton RV rental with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. The policy is standardized and the exact refund terms depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center and in your booking confirmation, so you will know exactly where you stand before paying. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip can be rebooked. Pro tip: if a Lake Champlain storm system is brewing, contact RVezy support early so the team can help you weigh your options.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, and ask about any cleaning fee so there are no surprises at checkout.

fpr.vermont.gov/state-parksWhen is the best time to visit Milton, VT for an RV trip?
Milton, VT shines from late May through mid-October, with each window offering something different. Late May to June brings 65 to 75 degree days, blooming maples, and the fewest crowds, perfect for a quieter RV camping experience around Lake Champlain. July and August are peak swimming and boating season with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s, ideal for Sand Bar State Park beach days. The real magic? Late September to mid-October, when Vermont's foliage explodes into red, orange, and gold and Milton becomes a leaf-peeper's dream. Winters are cold (often below 20°F with heavy snow), so most campgrounds close from late October through April. Pro tip: book foliage season RVs at least 4 to 6 months in advance.
weather.gov/btv/I'm first time renting an RV. What should I expect at pickup in Milton?
You're in great hands. Every RVezy host in Milton provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane system, water tanks, slide-outs, awning, generator, and everything else before you drive off. Plan for 30 to 60 minutes, ask every question that comes to mind, and take photos or video of the walkthrough so you can review later. Most first-timers are surprised how approachable RVs feel after a quick lesson. Pro tip: for your first family RV trip in Milton, consider a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer; both drive more like a large van than a truck. And if you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup straight to your campsite.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if I break down during my Milton RV trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on Route 7, a dead battery at Sand Bar State Park, or run out of fuel near Georgia, one call gets help dispatched to your location. Cell service is solid throughout Milton and most of Chittenden County, though it can dip in the more remote stretches near Cambridge and the Lamoille River Valley, so download offline maps before you head out. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app since they know their rig best. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Milton RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes to both, with a quick heads-up. Milton sits about 30 miles south of the Highgate Springs border crossing, making it a great launchpad for an RV road trip from Milton to Montreal, Quebec City, or the Eastern Townships. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but you must get the host's written approval first and confirm protection coverage extends north of the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy booking. Heading to New Hampshire's White Mountains or New York's Adirondacks via the Charlotte-Essex ferry is straightforward and fully covered. Pro tip: bring your passport, the vehicle registration paperwork from your host, and proof of insurance to the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for in Vermont?
Plan smart and your fuel budget for an RV rental in Vermont won't be a surprise. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs typically pull 6 to 10 mpg. Vermont gas prices hover around the national average, with Milton-area stations on Route 7 and US-2 usually offering the best rates compared to Burlington. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile trip in a Class C, plan around $150 to $200 for fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Mobil or Maplefields on US-7 in Milton before heading into the islands, where gas stations are scarcer and prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Milton?
For Vermont State Parks like Grand Isle, Sand Bar, and Burton Island, book as soon as the reservation window opens (Vermont State Parks accept reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official online system). Summer weekends in July and August, plus all of foliage season from mid-September through mid-October, sell out fast, sometimes within hours. Private campgrounds like Lone Pine Campsites, Apple Island Resort, and Champlain Adventure Campground typically open bookings 6 to 12 months ahead and also fill quickly for peak weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to snag and often cheaper. Pair that with a delivery-friendly RVezy host and you've got a stress-free Milton getaway.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Milton, VT?
Driving an RV around Milton is refreshingly manageable. US-7 and Interstate 89 are the main routes through town, both well-maintained with wide lanes that handle motorhomes easily. You'll want to take it slow on the scenic backroads like Route 104 toward Fairfax or the causeway across the Lake Champlain Islands on US-2, where crosswinds can be strong on bigger rigs. Watch for moose and deer at dawn and dusk, especially east of town toward Westford. Winter driving (November through April) brings snow, ice, and salted roads, which is why most rentals operate seasonally. Pro tip: keep an eye on VTrans 511 for real-time road conditions, especially if you're heading up Smugglers Notch (which is closed to RVs year-round, no exceptions).
511vt.com/What hookups and dump stations are available near Milton?
You're well covered for RV essentials around Milton. Most local private campgrounds, including Lone Pine Campsites, Apple Island Resort, and Champlain Adventure Campground, offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, and sewer at the site. Vermont State Parks like Grand Isle and Sand Bar provide on-site dump stations and potable water fills, even though individual sites typically don't have sewer hookups. There's also a public dump station at the Burlington North Beach Campground (about 20 minutes south) that's open to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump your tanks before leaving the campground on travel day, especially if you're heading deeper into the Champlain Islands where services thin out quickly.
fpr.vermont.gov/state-parks/things-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Milton, VT?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most Milton RV rentals on RVezy come stocked with sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a functional kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), and dining seating with seatbelts for travel days. Many hosts also include linens, towels, outdoor chairs, a propane grill, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi and TV vary by listing, so check the listing details or message the host. Pro tip: Vermont nights can dip into the 50s even in summer, so confirm your motorhome rental in Milton has working heat, especially if you're going during late spring or fall foliage.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my Milton RV rental?
There is plenty of flexibility. Milton-area hosts on RVezy offer popular add-ons like bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, propane refills, bike racks, generator use, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Milton, and many hosts offer delivery to Lake Champlain campgrounds, your driveway, or even Burlington International Airport for a per-mile fee. Most rentals have a 2 or 3 night minimum, with check-in commonly in the afternoon and check-out late morning. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book on RVezy if you want quick confirmation, and ask about a slightly later pickup or earlier drop-off if your flight times are tight, many hosts will accommodate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Milton%2C%20VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Milton?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay the rental cost (plus taxes, fees, and any selected add-ons) at booking using a credit or debit card, no cash or off-platform transfers. A refundable security deposit is held separately and pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after a clean return. To avoid any hold-up, do a thorough walkthrough with your host at pickup, document the RV's condition with photos and video, and return it with the agreed-upon fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: keep all your receipts in a folder so you can confirm fuel-ups and propane fills if any questions come up after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trip destinations from Milton, VT?
Milton is a brilliant launchpad for an RV road trip. Head 25 minutes south to Burlington's waterfront and Church Street Marketplace, or cross the causeway to the Lake Champlain Islands (Grand Isle, North Hero, and Isle La Motte) for 30 to 60 minutes of pure scenic driving. Stowe and Smugglers Notch State Park are about 1 hour east through quintessential Vermont countryside (note: RVs cannot use the Notch road itself). Lake Placid, NY and the Adirondack High Peaks are about 2 hours via the Charlotte-Essex ferry. Montreal sits roughly 1.5 hours north across the border. Pro tip: time a fall trip around the Stowe Foliage Arts Festival in early October for a true Vermont bucket-list weekend.
