Campgrounds and RV parks near Carthage, NY

The Black River runs through Carthage and is a well-known paddling and whitewater run, with rafting outfitters operating on stretches between Watertown and the village. The Tug Hill region also carries a large ATV and snowmobile trail network that connects across Lewis and Jefferson counties. Whetstone Gulf State Park is built around a three-mile-long gorge cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau, with a rim-loop hiking trail, a man-made swimming area, and a reservoir stocked with tiger muskie and largemouth bass. Non-motorized boats are permitted on the reservoir, and the same trail corridors are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. From the KOA, day trips reach Boldt Castle and the Thousand Islands boat tours to the north, Adirondack trailheads to the east, and Sackets Harbor on Lake Ontario to the west.
