Camping near Lacona, New York
Lacona sits in northern Oswego County on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, minutes from the Salmon River and the base of the Tug Hill Plateau. The village is a practical hub for RV travelers targeting Lake Ontario beaches, Chinook and coho salmon and steelhead fishing, and the trail network that runs east into the state forest lands.
Campgrounds in the immediate area range from small river-front operations to large full-service resorts. Options within a short drive put visitors close to the Salmon River, with runs of king salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead from September into late fall. Named parks close to Lacona include Mid-River Motel and Campground, Stoney's Pineville Campground, Fox Hollow Salmon River Lodge, Streamside RV Park and Golf Course, and Brennan Beach RV Resort.
Brennan Beach RV Resort sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario with beach frontage. Fox Hollow Salmon River Lodge offers RV sites with electrical hookups, tent sites, and a bathhouse. Streamside RV Park and Golf Course pairs river-adjacent sites with an on-site golf course, while Stoney's Pineville Campground and Mid-River Motel and Campground cater to anglers working the Salmon River. Together, these properties cover fishing base camps, family beach stays, and quieter wooded sites.
Things to do near Lacona
Fishing drives most trips here. Chinook and coho salmon begin entering the Salmon River in late August, and the run typically peaks from late September to mid-October before winding down by mid-November. Steelhead move into the river through fall and winter, with productive fishing continuing through February, March, and April.
Beyond the river, Lake Ontario offers swimming, boating, and shore access. A short drive reaches the Salmon River Fish Hatchery and Salmon River Falls. The nearby Salmon River State Forest and Winona State Forest add hiking, ATV riding, and, in winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Small boats can be launched from the Pine Grove site at Selkirk Shores, and larger boats from Mexico Point on the Little Salmon River. Families often mix a beach day on Lake Ontario with an afternoon at the hatchery or falls.

The region runs on a strong seasonal cycle. Most campgrounds in the Salmon River area are seasonal, and most fill during the peak of the salmon run. Sites between mid-September and mid-October should be booked well in advance, and popular electric sites can sell out months ahead for the Columbus Day period.
Spring and early summer are quieter. Many area campgrounds operate from spring through fall, with typical opening dates in early to mid-May and closing dates in mid- to late October. Summer brings warm swimming on Lake Ontario and the peak of family camping demand around holiday weekends.
Winter shuts down most private campgrounds, but the surrounding Tug Hill area stays active. Tug Hill receives some of the heaviest snowfall totals in New York State, and Lacona itself averages roughly 169 inches per year. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing dominate December through March, and steelhead anglers work the Salmon River through the cold months.

Kip was fantastic! Very responsive, flexible on delivery and pick up timing, and right on time! It took a lot of stress out of our travel to have someone so reliable. The RV was spacious and they set up an outdoor rug, chairs and a table for us. They also had bedding available. Highly recommend!

How to book
For private campgrounds around Lacona, book direct with the property. Fall salmon-season sites go earliest, and electric hookups for the Columbus Day period often sell out in spring. Call ahead to confirm rig length, hookups, and check-in windows.
For nearby New York State Parks such as Selkirk Shores, reservations use the ReserveAmerica system and can be made up to nine months in advance. Same-day campsite reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only, subject to availability, after 3 p.m.
For primitive camping on state forest land, NYS DEC rules apply. Check DEC guidance before setting up, and note that most primitive sites do not accommodate large RVs.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a working fishing town during fall and a lake-and-forest recreation area the rest of the year. Traffic on Route 13 and access roads to the Salmon River spikes from Labor Day through mid-October, and lodging fills fast. Cell coverage is generally reliable close to Pulaski and I-81 but drops off inside the Tug Hill forests.
Sites vary widely by property. Larger resorts on Lake Ontario offer well-kept RV campsites and rental units with modern facilities. Smaller river-side operations tend to be simpler, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and shared bathhouses.
Bring layers year-round. Lake Ontario keeps mornings cool even in July, and lake-effect systems can push cold, wet weather in shoulder seasons. Insect repellent is essential from late May through August, particularly near wooded and river-side sites.
