Campgrounds and RV parks near Abingdon, VA

Abingdon sits in the Blue Ridge highlands of far southwest Virginia, at the northern end of the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34.3-mile rail-trail running from the trailhead in Abingdon through Damascus toward Whitetop near the North Carolina line. Following severe damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024, the trail is currently open only from Abingdon to Damascus, about 17 miles, while the Damascus-to-Whitetop section remains closed for rebuilding. The trail, along with the surrounding Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Jefferson National Forest, drives most camping demand in the area. RVers have a mix of options within a short drive of town. Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, Switchback Creek Campground, Cold Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground, and Old Mill Music & RV Park are among the closer private parks, offering hookups and easier access to Abingdon restaurants and the Creeper trailhead. Public campgrounds sit farther out in the mountains. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area manages eleven national forest campgrounds, and Hungry Mother State Park near Marion adds a lake-focused option with a beach and boat rentals.

Public and private campgrounds around Abingdon use different systems, so plan the trip in two parts. National forest sites at Beartree and other Mount Rogers campgrounds are booked on Recreation.gov, with a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Reservations open up to six months in advance. Hungry Mother State Park takes reservations up to 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system at ReserveVAParks.com. Summer weekends and October color weekends fill first, so book as early as the window opens. Private parks such as Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, Switchback Creek Campground, Cold Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground, and Old Mill Music & RV Park book directly through their own websites or by phone. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type when reserving, since mountain access roads and older loops can be tight for larger Class A RVs.
