Campgrounds and RV parks near Allison Gap, VA

Hungry Mother State Park anchors most itineraries. The park is known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains, with a sandy beach and bathhouse, boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, fishing kayaks, paddleboats, paddleboards and hydrobikes, a boat launch, and a universally accessible fishing pier. Over 17 miles of hiking and biking trails traverse the surrounding mountains. The Virginia Creeper Trail is the other main draw. It is a rails-to-trails route open to walking, horseback riding, and biking, running downhill from Whitetop Station to Damascus and continuing on toward Abingdon. Shuttle services out of Damascus and Whitetop simplify one-way rides. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area adds high-elevation hiking, trout streams, and access to the wild ponies of Grayson Highlands.

Late spring through early fall is the busiest window. Wildflowers, mild days, and long daylight hours make May and June popular, and summer weekends around the Hungry Mother Festival in mid-July are the tightest for state park sites. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, all cabins and the lodge at Hungry Mother are rented by the week, so RV sites absorb much of the shoulder demand. Fall brings cool nights and strong color across the ridges, typically peaking in mid to late October. It is a good stretch for Creeper Trail rides, but overnight temperatures drop quickly at higher elevations near Whitetop. Winter is quiet. Camping is available year-round in the Camp Burson campground, which sits about one mile before the park's main entrance. Many private parks stay open through the cold months, though water service can be intermittent in early spring and late fall when spigots may be shut off due to freezing temperatures. Travelers should plan to fill tanks before overnight lows dip below freezing.

Sites near Allison Gap tend to be wooded, creekside, and modest in scale. At Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park, 19 paved campsites offer electric and water hookups (20- and 30-amp), fire rings, and picnic tables, with a centrally located bathhouse featuring universally accessible facilities and seasonal laundry service. Larger rigs use Camp Burson, which has 50-amp service and some full-hookup sites. Private parks along the Creeper Trail corridor typically offer full hookups, and several sit directly on a creek. Cell service is spotty in the mountains, especially toward Whitetop and Mount Rogers. Bear-aware food storage, layered clothing for cool nights, and a plan for firewood are all worth packing. Groceries and fuel are easiest to find in Marion, Abingdon, and Damascus.
