Campgrounds near Appomattox, Virginia
Appomattox sits in central Virginia's Piedmont, roughly halfway between Lynchburg and Farmville, with easy access to state parks, national historical sites, and the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge foothills. The town is best known as the location where the Civil War effectively ended, and Appomattox Court House National Historical Park anchors day-trip planning for most visitors.
RV travelers have a useful mix of public and private options within a short drive. Holliday Lake State Park sits within the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest in central Virginia, near Appomattox, and Paradise Lake Family Campground is a nearby private option between Appomattox and Lynchburg. Lynchburg RV Resort adds hookup infrastructure closer to the city, while Horseshoe at James River State Park offers pull-through sites to the north along the James River.
Devils Backbone Camp, further northwest toward Nelson County, rounds out the region for travelers combining Appomattox history with Blue Ridge scenery. The area's mild shoulder seasons and network of state parks make it a practical base for one- to two-week itineraries.
Things to do near Appomattox
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is the main draw, with preserved buildings and living-history programs interpreting the surrender that ended the Civil War. Holliday Lake State Park sits just minutes away, so the two pair naturally on a single day.
On the water, fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill is popular at Holliday Lake, and a nearby Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources delayed-harvest trout stream allows anglers to fish for brown and rainbow trout. The park's swimming beach with lifeguards and the Critter Hole play area are visitor favorites, and boat, kayak, canoe, and paddleboat rentals are available seasonally.
James River State Park adds smallmouth bass fishing, canoeing, and kayaking along three miles of James River shoreline, plus 22 miles of multi-use trails for hikers, bikers, and horses. The Blue Ridge Parkway is within roughly an hour's drive for scenic day trips.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons in Appomattox, with mild days and vibrant scenery. Spring wildflowers and fall color are the two peaks for scenic drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and October weekends fill quickly at state-park campgrounds.
Summer heat and humidity are real factors. July daytime highs run near 32°C, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Piedmont, so shaded sites and rigs with working air conditioning matter. Swimming at Holliday Lake and paddling on the James River are at their best from late June through August.
Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks, but state-park amenities scale back and the Horseshoe and Red Oak loops at James River are open only from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Under the Code of Virginia, open fires including wood and charcoal are prohibited between February 15 and April 30 each year, except between 4 p.m. and midnight, though self-contained camping stoves are permitted.
How to book campgrounds near Appomattox
Virginia state parks use a central reservation system operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation for Holliday Lake and James River. Campsites can be reserved online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK (7275) up to 11 months in advance, with same-day reservations accepted until 2 p.m. Popular summer weekends and fall-color weekends at Holliday Lake and Horseshoe fill early, so booking as soon as the window opens is smart.
On high-demand weekends it can be very difficult to get a campsite at Horseshoe Campground, since sites are often booked months out. If a preferred date is sold out, cancellation-alert services and mid-week arrivals often surface openings. The maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period at any one park.
Private parks such as Paradise Lake Family Campground, Lynchburg RV Resort, and Devils Backbone Camp take direct reservations through their own websites.
What to expect when RVing near Appomattox
Sites in the area range from full-hookup private resorts to water-and-electric state-park loops. Horseshoe at James River State Park has 10 pull-through sites with water and electric hookups, including 20, 30, and 50-amp outlets at each pedestal, plus 20 covered horse stalls and five tent pads. There is no sewer at the site, but a dump station is available near the park entrance, and the loop accommodates rigs up to 40 feet.
Holliday Lake sites offer electric hookups, a dump station, and a full-service bathhouse, but no sewer at individual sites. Cell service is very limited around Holliday Lake, so download maps ahead of time. Paradise Lake Family Campground and Lynchburg RV Resort have stronger connectivity for travelers who need to stay online.
