Campgrounds near Belle Haven, Virginia
Belle Haven is a small town on Virginia's Eastern Shore, roughly midway between Onancock and Cape Charles on the narrow Delmarva Peninsula. The area sits between the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic barrier islands to the east, which shapes almost every camping option nearby.
RV travelers using Belle Haven as a base have a mix of private waterfront resorts and one major state park to choose from. Virginia Landing RV Campground and Tall Pines Harbor Waterfront Campground both sit on Chesapeake-side coves close to town. Farther south toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Sun Outdoors Cape Charles and the Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA Resort offer full-service resort sites. Kiptopeke State Park offers recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay, along with a boat ramp, lighted fishing pier, picnic areas, 5.1 miles of hiking and biking trails, playground, beach bathhouse and swimming beach.
The region is rural and quiet, so most trips combine campground time with day drives to Cape Charles, Chincoteague, and the wildlife refuges at the southern tip of the peninsula.
Things to do near Belle Haven
Water activities dominate. Kayaking, crabbing, fishing, and swimming are all easy from the Bay-side campgrounds, and Kiptopeke's boat ramp and lighted pier make it a practical base for anglers. The park has an area for swimming from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Birding is a major draw. In the picnic area at Kiptopeke, a handicap accessible elevated hawkwatch platform provides one of the finest sites in the Americas to view migrating birds of prey, and the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch, operated by Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory, counts raptors annually each fall. Experienced hawkwatchers are hired each year to conduct the hawkwatch, from September 1 through November 30, assisted by a corps of dedicated volunteers.
Beyond the campgrounds, families use Belle Haven as a launch point for Cape Charles town, the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague Island, and Chincoteague to the north.

The main camping season on Virginia's Eastern Shore runs from spring through late fall. The Kiptopeke campground is normally open from the beginning of March to the beginning of December. Shoulder months bring the most comfortable weather, with mild days and cool nights ideal for tent and RV camping alike.
Summer is peak family season, with warm Bay water and long days, but humidity is high and mosquitoes are active. Coastal Virginia is within the Atlantic hurricane belt, so tropical storm risk climbs from August through October.
Fall is prime for birders. Kiptopeke State Park is a hot spot for bird-watchers through fall and winter, when the coastal marshlands serve as a stopover for migrating songbirds and raptors. Winter is quiet, with waterfowl on the Bay and most private RV parks operating on reduced hours or closed entirely.
How to book campgrounds near Belle Haven
Kiptopeke State Park is reserved through the Virginia State Parks system. Overnight accommodations, picnic shelters and some meeting facilities are available for reservations up to 11 months in advance through the online and call-in reservation system. Campsites can book up fast, especially on summer and holiday weekends, so booking a minimum of three months in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment. Reserve online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 1-800-933-PARK.
Cancellations must be made by 11:59 p.m. on the day before the scheduled arrival, and there is a cancellation fee for camping reservations.
Private parks such as Virginia Landing RV Campground, Sun Outdoors Cape Charles, Tall Pines Harbor Waterfront Campground, and the Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or brand booking systems. Waterfront sites at these resorts typically sell out earliest for summer weekends and holiday periods.
What to expect on site
Most Eastern Shore RV parks near Belle Haven offer paved or gravel pads with full hookups, bathhouses, and Bay or creek access. Kiptopeke offers a more traditional state-park experience. Kiptopeke State Park has 141 campsites (93 with full hookups) and is located on the eastern shore of Virginia. The park has two and three-bedroom cabins, six-bedroom lodges, RV and tent camping, yurts and a bunkhouse.
Bring bug spray. Coastal marsh means mosquitoes and biting flies in warm months. Firewood may not be brought to the park because of the potential for infestation.
Cell service is generally reliable near Route 13, weaker on side roads. Stock groceries in Cape Charles or on Route 13 before heading to more remote waterfront sites.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Belle Haven, VA?
Good news: RV rental in Belle Haven is a smart-money way to explore Virginia's Eastern Shore. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $280 per night, and luxury Class A rigs from $250 to $400 per night. To score a cheap RV rental in Belle Haven, travel midweek, book in the shoulder seasons (April to May or late September to October), and skip Pony Swim week in late July when Chincoteague prices spike. Filter by price range and sort low-to-high to spot the best Eastern Shore deals fast. Pro tip: booking a travel trailer with delivery often beats the cost of a drivable motorhome plus fuel.
virginia.org/places-to-visit/regions/eastern-shore/What license do I need to rent an RV in Belle Haven, Virginia?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Belle Haven, Virginia. There is no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required by the Virginia DMV for personal RVs, even the big Class A motorhomes you will find on RVezy. To be an approved driver on RVezy, you generally need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters in Accomack County are surprised how quick the approval process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Belle Haven, VA protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Belle Haven booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can match protection to your comfort and budget. The plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip and gives renters meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the back roads of the Eastern Shore. Pro tip: if you are heading to Chincoteague or Cape Charles where sand, salt, and tight beach-town parking lots are part of the adventure, many renters choose a higher-tier plan.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Belle Haven RV trip?
You are not locked in. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking (hosts do not), and there is a grace period right after you book where you can receive a full refund if plans change. The policy also builds in flexibility for major disruptions like hurricanes or tropical storms, which can occasionally affect the Eastern Shore of Virginia during Atlantic hurricane season from June through November. Because the exact terms depend on how far out your trip is, you will see the details laid out clearly during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or offers travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Chincoteague Pony Swim week or Cape Charles summer weekends, and reach out to RVezy support if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Belle Haven?
Yes, dogs are welcome on plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Belle Haven. Just tick the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every Eastern Shore listing that allows four-legged co-pilots. The area is a dream for dog owners: Kiptopeke State Park down in Cape Charles allows leashed pets on most trails and the beach, Cape Charles town beach is dog-friendly outside summer afternoons, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge has pet-friendly sections. Note that pets are not allowed inside the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, so plan a pet-sitter day if Assateague is on your list. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/kiptopekeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Belle Haven?
Yes, RV delivery in Belle Haven is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Many Eastern Shore hosts will tow the RV straight to your campsite at Kiptopeke State Park, Cherrystone Family Camping Resort in Cheriton, Tall Pines Harbor Campground, or even a private property near Occohannock Creek, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. That means zero towing stress and no learning curve on day one, which is ideal if it's your first time renting an RV. Filter by Delivery on the listings page to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask the host about delivery to Chincoteague campgrounds; many will cover the 50-mile run for a flat fee.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/kiptopekeHow far can I drive from Belle Haven on a typical RV road trip?
You've got an incredible range of road trip options from Belle Haven, and many RVezy hosts offer generous mileage allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage. Popular routes from Belle Haven include: Chincoteague and Assateague Island (about 50 miles north, roughly 1 hour), Cape Charles and Kiptopeke State Park (about 45 miles south, 1 hour), Virginia Beach via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (about 75 miles, 90 minutes), Ocean City, Maryland (about 75 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes), and Williamsburg (about 130 miles, 2.5 hours). Always check the listing's daily mileage allowance before booking. Pro tip: the Bay Bridge-Tunnel toll for RVs scales by length and axles, so factor that into your budget.
cbbt.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Belle Haven, VA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Belle Haven. A few favorites: Kiptopeke State Park in Cape Charles (Chesapeake Bay views, full hookups, fishing pier, around 30 miles south); Cherrystone Family Camping Resort in Cheriton (huge waterfront resort with pools and crabbing, about 25 miles south); Tall Pines Harbor Campground in Sanford (waterfront sites on Pocomoke Sound, about 35 miles north); Cape Charles/Chesapeake Bay KOA Resort (just north of the Bay Bridge-Tunnel with a private bay beach); and Tom's Cove Park or Jellystone Park on Chincoteague Island. Pro tip: state park sites at Kiptopeke book up six to eleven months ahead through Virginia State Parks reservations, so set a calendar reminder if summer is your target.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/kiptopekeWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Belle Haven?
The sweet spot for a Belle Haven RV trip is mid-April through June and again from early September through late October. Spring brings highs in the 60s to upper 70s, blooming marshes, and the spring bird migration through the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. Fall delivers warm days in the 70s, cool nights, fewer mosquitoes, and the famous monarch butterfly migration at Kiptopeke. Summer (July to August) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s plus the Chincoteague Pony Swim crowds in late July, which is exciting but busy. Winters are mild (40s by day) with quiet campgrounds and great birdwatching. Pro tip: late September is local-favorite weather with seafood festivals in full swing.
weather.gov/akq/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Belle Haven beginner-friendly?
Belle Haven is one of the most beginner-friendly places in Virginia to rent an RV. US Route 13 (the main north-south road on the Eastern Shore) is wide, flat, lightly trafficked compared to mainland Virginia, and has plenty of pull-offs, gas stations, and dump stations along the way. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, the generator, water systems, and dumping, so you won't be guessing. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a delivery-included listing and the RV will be set up and ready when you arrive. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a 22-to-25-foot travel trailer for the easiest first-time experience.
virginiadot.org/travel/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 13, a battery issue at a Chincoteague campground, or a tow back from Cape Charles is just a phone call away. Your host is also your first line of support and usually responds quickly through the RVezy app, since many Eastern Shore hosts live within 30 minutes of Belle Haven. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave and snap a photo of the RV VIN and license plate at pickup to speed up any service call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Belle Haven RV rental to Maryland, Delaware, or other states?
Yes, hopping across state lines is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Belle Haven. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, so you can cross into Maryland in about 35 minutes for Ocean City or Assateague Island National Seashore, swing up to Delaware's beaches in around 90 minutes, or head south through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so message them through the listing before booking. Pro tip: a 7-day loop covering Chincoteague, Ocean City, and Cape Charles is a classic Eastern Shore RV trip.
cbbt.com/crossing-information/What should I budget for fuel on an Eastern Shore RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget here than in most regions because the Eastern Shore is flat, so RVs hit their best efficiency. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 12 to 18 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. Virginia gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find diesel and regular at Royal Farms and Shore Stop locations along Route 13 in Exmore, Onley, and Painter. Pro tip: fill up on the Eastern Shore before crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel toll plaza; prices in Virginia Beach run noticeably higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Belle Haven?
Lock in campgrounds early and the rest of your Belle Haven RV trip falls into place. Kiptopeke State Park opens reservations up to 11 months in advance through Virginia State Parks, and waterfront sites for July and August often sell out within hours of opening. Cherrystone, Tall Pines Harbor, and the Cape Charles KOA also fill 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends. For Chincoteague during Pony Swim week (last week of July), book 9 to 12 months out. Shoulder season (April, May, September, October) is much more relaxed, often just 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if state park sites are gone, check ReserveAmerica and Recreation.gov for cancellation openings.
reserveamerica.com/explore/virginia-state-parks/VAWhat are driving conditions like around Belle Haven and the Eastern Shore?
Driving here is famously easy: the Eastern Shore is one of the flattest, least congested driving regions on the East Coast, perfect for a motorhome rental in Belle Haven. US Route 13 is the main artery and stays four lanes through most of Accomack and Northampton counties, with speed limits around 55 mph. Watch for two location-specific things: high winds on the 17.5-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (Class A and tall trailers may face wind restrictions during storms), and slow farm equipment on rural side roads in spring and fall harvest. Summer can also bring sudden thunderstorms. Pro tip: tune to local AM stations or check VDOT 511 for live Bay Bridge-Tunnel wind advisories before crossing in a tall rig.
511virginia.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Belle Haven?
Eastern Shore campgrounds are well-equipped for any RV camping in Belle Haven. Most full-service parks like Cherrystone, Cape Charles KOA, and Tall Pines Harbor offer 30/50-amp electric, city water, sewer hookups, free Wi-Fi, dump stations, propane refills, laundry, hot showers, and waterfront sites. Kiptopeke State Park provides water and electric (no sewer at the site) plus a centralized dump station and potable water fill. For a clean dump station between trips, Sunset Beach RV Resort near Cape Charles has a public-access option. Pro tip: Chincoteague campgrounds offer reduced-rate Friday-Sunday packages outside Pony Swim week, and many include free kayak launches into the bay; pack your paddleboard if you have one.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/kiptopekeWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Belle Haven?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels for your Belle Haven RV rental. Most listings sleep 4 to 8 people and include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, furnace, awning, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays on Chincoteague. Campervans are leaner but typically pack a fridge, sink, stove, and a comfy bed for two. Wi-Fi varies, so ask the host directly. Pro tip: Eastern Shore mosquitoes are no joke in summer, so confirm the RV has good screen doors and pack extra repellent before heading to the marshes near Wachapreague.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors-and-sports/camping/What add-ons can I get with my Belle Haven RV rental, and how does pickup work?
RVezy hosts in Belle Haven typically offer add-ons like bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), portable grills, kayaks or paddleboards, bike racks, and generators for boondocking. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on by far on the Eastern Shore, often $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pickup usually happens at the host's home or a meeting spot in Exmore, Onley, or Belle Haven itself, with a 45-to-60-minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, so check the listing. Pro tip: bundle bedding plus a kitchen kit so you can roll straight from the airport in Norfolk to your campsite.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors-and-sports/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup, with the amount set by the host, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Belle Haven RV trip, take date-stamped photos and a quick video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, empty the gray and black tanks at Kiptopeke's dump station, and give the interior a quick sweep. Pro tip: keep all fuel receipts from your Route 13 fill-ups.
