Campgrounds near Bensley, Virginia
Bensley sits in Chesterfield County on the south side of Richmond, minutes from I-95, I-295, and Route 288. That location makes it a practical staging point for RV travellers heading to the Richmond metro, the James River corridor, or the Historic Triangle to the east. Full-hookup private parks and a large state park with electric and water sites are all within a short drive.
Americamps RV Resort in nearby Ashland is the closest full-service resort of scale, with pull-through sites sized for big rigs. Kosmo Village Campground, Picture Lake Campground, Camptown Campground, and South Forty Camp Resort round out the private options in the surrounding counties, giving renters a mix of wooded, lakeside, and open-lot layouts.
For a public-land option, Pocahontas State Park lies roughly 10 miles southwest in Chesterfield. At 7,925 acres it is the largest state park in Virginia, with more than 110 RV sites, bathhouses, a camp store, and free admission to the Aquatic Recreation Center for overnight guests.
Things to do near Bensley
Pocahontas State Park anchors the outdoor side of a trip. The park has more than 80 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, three lakes for fishing, and a seasonal aquatic center with pools and water slides. Boat rentals run seasonally on Swift Creek Lake.
In Richmond itself, families can work through the Science Museum of Virginia, Maymont, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Civil War battlefields sit on multiple sides of the city, and the James River Park System offers riverside walking and paddling access.
Day trips reach further east to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, and north to Kings Dominion theme park in Doswell, both within about an hour of most Bensley-area campgrounds.

Central Virginia has four distinct seasons, and the shoulder months are the sweet spot for RV travel. Spring brings blooming landscapes and mild days, with occasional rain showers pushing through. Fall delivers cooler air and hardwood foliage across Chesterfield and Henrico counties, which is prime hiking and biking weather at Pocahontas State Park.
Summer runs hot and humid, with daytime highs commonly in the upper 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Sites at family-oriented private parks and at Pocahontas fill quickly from Memorial Day through Labor Day, especially on weekends and around Kings Dominion and Richmond Raceway events. Book several weeks ahead for peak dates.
Winter is the quietest window. Pocahontas State Park stays open year-round for camping, and several private parks in the area keep a portion of sites available for cold-weather stays. Expect frosty nights, occasional light snow, and reduced amenity hours, including closed pools and seasonal splash areas.
How to book
Pocahontas State Park uses the Virginia State Parks reservation system, either online at reservevaparks.com or by phone at 800-933-PARK. Sites, cabins, yurts, and the lodge can be booked up to 11 months out, and popular summer weekends often clear well in advance.
Private campgrounds around Bensley take reservations directly. Americamps RV Resort books through its own website and phone line, and Kosmo Village Campground, Picture Lake Campground, Camptown Campground, and South Forty Camp Resort each set their own deposit and cancellation terms. Confirm rig length limits, hookup amperage, and pet policies at time of booking.
Many RV rental hosts in the Richmond area will deliver and set up at the campground, which removes the need to tow. Coordinate the delivery window with the park's check-in time before finalizing the reservation.
What to expect
Roads into most Bensley-area parks are paved or well-graded gravel, and the terrain is rolling rather than mountainous. Big-rig access is straightforward at resorts such as Americamps RV Resort, which is built around full-hookup pull-throughs. Smaller parks in the area tend toward wooded back-in sites, so check length and slide clearance before booking.
Expect Southern humidity in summer, mosquitoes near the lakes, and the possibility of pop-up thunderstorms. Cellular coverage is generally strong across Chesterfield and Henrico counties, though it can dip inside Pocahontas State Park.
Groceries, fuel, dump stations, and RV service are all easy to reach from Bensley thanks to the I-95 and Route 288 corridors. Standard amenities at most parks include bathhouses, laundry, a playground, and a seasonal pool.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pocahontasCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Bensley?
Yes, RV delivery in Bensley is a popular option, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome on I-95 or Route 288. Many local hosts will deliver and set up at nearby spots like Pocahontas State Park or the Richmond North/Kings Dominion KOA in Doswell, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set by each host based on distance and rig size. Pro tip: type your campground name or address into the search, filter by Delivery, and message two or three hosts to compare quotes. You show up, the RV is ready, and your vacation starts the moment you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bensley%2C%20VirginiaHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Bensley?
Plenty far, because Bensley sits in a sweet spot of the Mid-Atlantic. Each Bensley host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering unlimited mileage and others including a daily allowance plus a per-mile rate after that. Pro tip: filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage if you are planning a longer loop down the Blue Ridge Parkway.
virginiadot.org/travel/Where are the best campgrounds near Bensley, VA?
You have excellent options within a short drive. Pocahontas State Park (about 10 miles southwest) offers wooded sites with electric and water hookups across thousands of acres of trails and lakes. Americamps Richmond North in Ashland offers full hookups, a pool, and easy I-95 access. Richmond North/Kings Dominion KOA Holiday in Doswell is the family pick, just minutes from the theme park. Rockahock Campgrounds near Lanexa puts you on the Chickahominy River, and American Heritage RV Park in Williamsburg is perfect for combining Bensley with Colonial Williamsburg. Pro tip: for RV camping in Bensley during spring and fall weekends, book 8-12 weeks ahead, especially for Pocahontas State Park.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pocahontasWhen is the best time to visit Bensley, VA in an RV?
Bensley shines from mid-March through late November, with two standout windows. Spring (April-May) brings dogwoods, redbuds, and daytime highs in the 65-75°F range, perfect for hiking Pocahontas State Park. Fall (mid-September through early November) delivers crisp 55-70°F days and gorgeous foliage along the James River. Summers are warm and humid, with highs in the upper 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, ideal for a campervan rental in Bensley with strong AC and a lakeside site. Winters are mild compared to northern Virginia, with daytime highs often in the 45-50°F range, so year-round RV camping in Bensley is genuinely doable. Pro tip: October weekends are magic, and they book up fast.
weather.gov/akq/I'm renting an RV for the first time. How does the handover work?
First time renting an RV? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, showing you exactly how to operate the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, leveling jacks, and waste tanks. Most walkthroughs run 30-60 minutes, and hosts encourage questions, photos, and short videos so you can rewatch later. You will also have the host's phone number for any in-trip questions and RVezy's customer support as backup. Pro tip: for your first Bensley RV trip, pick a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20-25 foot travel trailer and book a one-night shakedown at Pocahontas State Park before heading farther afield.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pocahontasWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue?
You are covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Bensley, VA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 288, a dead battery at the Richmond North KOA, or a lockout at the Pocahontas State Park gate is just one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch a tow, jump-start, tire change, or fuel delivery to wherever you are. Your host is also a quick text away for RV-specific questions like resetting the inverter. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can share details fast if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bensley RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes to interstate travel, and Bensley's location makes a great launchpad for an RV road trip up and down the East Coast. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, including popular routes to the Outer Banks, Washington DC, Shenandoah, Myrtle Beach, and Great Smoky Mountains. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts, so message before booking to confirm and discuss any cross-border paperwork. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host in the messages, then screenshot the agreement so everyone is on the same page before you roll out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip from Bensley?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for here. Virginia gas prices generally run slightly below the national average, and you'll find the cheapest stations along Route 1 and Jefferson Davis Highway in the Bensley/Chesterfield corridor. Expect roughly 8-10 mpg for a Class A motorhome, 10-14 mpg for a Class C, 16-22 mpg for a Class B campervan, and 12-18 mpg for your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. A 250-mile loop to Virginia Beach and back in a Class C will burn roughly 20-25 gallons. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to scout stations with diesel and tall canopies, since some Bensley-area pumps have low overhangs not friendly to taller rigs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bensley?
Book early for the best sites, especially in spring and fall. Virginia State Parks like Pocahontas open reservations up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime weekends fill within days of that window opening. For private parks like Americamps Richmond North or the Richmond North/Kings Dominion KOA, 2-3 months ahead is usually enough, but holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) want 4-6 months of lead time. Mid-week stays are far easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Virginia second and ask the host about delivery directly to that campsite, since many local owners already know the layouts.
reservevaparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Bensley?
Driving around Bensley is very manageable, even in a larger motorhome rental in Bensley. Most routes use I-95, I-295, Route 288, and Route 1, all of which have wide lanes and standard interstate overpass clearances. Rush hour on I-95 between Richmond and Petersburg (roughly 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. weekdays) is the main thing to dodge. Avoid the narrow streets of Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill in downtown Richmond with anything over 25 feet. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop visibility fast. Pro tip: nervous about urban driving? Ask your host about RV delivery in Bensley straight to your campground, and let them handle the highway portion.
511virginia.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Bensley?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Bensley RV trip. Pocahontas State Park offers 30/50-amp electric and water hookups on most sites, with a centralized dump station and free potable water fill. Americamps Richmond North and the Richmond North/Kings Dominion KOA both offer full hookups (electric, water, sewer) plus WiFi, pools, and laundry. Free public dump stations are also available at Pocahontas State Park for paid campers, and most truck stops along I-95 offer dump and fresh water for a small fee. Pro tip: arrive with about a quarter tank of fresh water rather than a full one, since full tanks add hundreds of pounds and cut your fuel economy significantly on the drive in.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pocahontasWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Bensley?
More than most first-timers expect. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers in the Bensley area typically sleep 4-8 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunks, and they include a kitchen with a stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Most have rooftop AC, a furnace, a TV, and a generator or shore-power setup. Campervan rentals in Bensley (Class B) are tighter but include a kitchenette and wet bath. Seat belts are provided for every legal traveling passenger. Pro tip: filter your search by Sleeps count and check the listing photos for a true walk-through, then message the host about specifics like outdoor speakers, awnings, or backup cameras.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bensley%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Bensley hosts love making your trip turnkey. Popular add-ons include linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and table sets, portable grills, generators for trailers, bike racks, and pet packages with bowls and tie-outs. Many hosts offer delivery to Pocahontas State Park, Americamps Richmond North, or the Richmond North KOA, often with full setup included. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a mutually agreed lot, with a 30-60 minute orientation. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering a daily free mileage allowance and unlimited-mileage options for stationary delivery trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit on your first family RV trip in Bensley and you will save hours of prep.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bensley%2C%20VirginiaHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Bensley, VA, RVezy charges your card through the platform, and you will see the full nightly rate, delivery, mileage, taxes, and any add-ons before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment shortly before your trip starts and released after dropoff, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels. The hold amount and timing are spelled out clearly in your booking summary. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video walk-around of the RV inside and out at both pickup and dropoff. It is the single best way to keep your full deposit and start your next Bensley adventure on a good note.
