Campgrounds and RV parks near Big Stone Gap East, VA

Big Stone Gap East sits in Wise County in far southwestern Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains at roughly 1,540 feet of elevation. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Heart of Appalachia region, with coalfield history, mountain rivers, and state park lands within a short drive. Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to state park sites. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground sits along the South Fork Powell River just outside town, offering pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service. Natural Tunnel State Park, about 25 miles east near Duffield, has two campgrounds with electric-water hookup sites totaling 34 sites and a primitive tent-only campground, and camping is available from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December. Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc and Holston Hideaway extend the private-park choices to the south and east, and Camp Mountventures adds another regional option. Most sites in this corner of Virginia are within an hour of hiking trails, fishing waters, and small-town amenities, which makes trip planning around a single base camp straightforward.

Virginia State Parks use a single reservation system. Reservations for overnight accommodations at Natural Tunnel State Park can be made 11 months in advance at www.reservevaparks.com, and the primitive tent area requires reservations by calling the park office. Popular summer weekends and holiday periods tend to fill early, so booking as far ahead as possible is the safest approach. Private campgrounds in the area, including Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc, Holston Hideaway, and Camp Mountventures, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For holiday weekends and fall-foliage weekends, reserving several weeks out is recommended.
