Campgrounds near Blue Ridge, Virginia
Blue Ridge sits in Botetourt County between Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Parkway, giving RV renters a mix of national park, mountain-lake, and creekside campgrounds within a short drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic byway that follows the high crests of the central and southern Appalachians for 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The closest options serve a range of trip styles, from full-hookup lakeside RV resorts to rustic Parkway sites without electricity.
Limestone Park in Buchanan sits along the James River and offers eleven level sites with electric and water; three sites have 30 amp service and the others have 50 amp service. Middle Creek Campground, also near Buchanan, is a family-owned property with tent sites, full-hookup RV sites, and cabins on a creek near the Parkway and Appalachian Trail.
For Parkway access, Peaks of Otter Campground has 60 sites available for advance reservation and 79 first-come, first-served campsites at Milepost 85.6. Halesford Harbour Resort on Smith Mountain Lake and Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing in New Castle round out the closest options for lake stays and adventure-focused family trips.
Things to do near Blue Ridge
The Peaks of Otter area anchors most trips. The 24-acre Abbott Lake is one of the biggest attractions the Peaks of Otter Park has to offer, and the lake is well-stocked with small mouth bass and bluegill. A Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anglers age 16 and older.
Smith Mountain Lake, reached via Halesford Harbour Resort, has 20,000 acres of water and 500 miles of shoreline for boating, swimming, and fishing. Limestone Park offers easy James River access for fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking, and Middle Creek Campground gives paddlers a nearby creek and river options.
At Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, guests can tube Craig Creek and access on-site programs including a giant swing, team building, low ropes, high ropes, caving, rock climbing, and mountain biking lessons and guided trips.

The Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds run a compressed season. The operating season for Peaks of Otter Campground typically runs from May through October, varying slightly each year based on weather and other factors. Fall foliage in October draws the heaviest demand, and weekends near peak color book out well in advance.
Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights at Parkway elevations, though temperatures on the ridge run noticeably colder than the valley towns. Summer is peak season on Smith Mountain Lake, with pool and beach amenities in full swing. The pool at Limestone Park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and lake resorts follow a similar warm-weather rhythm.
Winter access is limited. Parkway campgrounds close, and lower-elevation parks scale back services. At Limestone Park, showers and bathrooms are open March 1 through December 1, and water to sites may be turned off during extreme cold periods between December 1 and March 1. Halesford Harbour on Smith Mountain Lake is the area's only year-round RV park, making it a fallback for cold-weather stays.

How to book near Blue Ridge
Peaks of Otter uses the federal reservation system. Reservations can be made online at recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Peaks Of Otter Campground is a federal campground; reservations open 6 months in advance at Recreation.gov and sites sell out quickly. Availability of first come, first served sites cannot be tracked through Recreation.gov, and these sites must be booked in person at the campground kiosk.
Private campgrounds each use their own systems. Limestone Park and Halesford Harbour Resort both accept online reservations through Campspot, and Middle Creek Campground takes bookings through its own website. Limestone Park keeps a small set of overnight sites in the upper parking lot on a first come, first served basis.
Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing books directly through the operator. For fall-foliage weekends anywhere along the Parkway corridor, plan several months out.
What to expect on-site near Blue Ridge
Hookup levels vary widely. Peaks of Otter Campground does not offer hookups for water, sewer, or electric. The campground has flush toilets and drinking water but no showers, and cell service on the ridge is limited. By contrast, Halesford Harbour Resort sites offer new municipal sewer and water connections as well as 30- and 50-amp electric service, with access to a boat launch and marina, two private beaches, and an on-site restaurant.
Mountain roads add planning steps. Access lanes to creekside campgrounds can be narrow and curvy, so towed rigs should time arrivals to avoid meeting outbound traffic. Firewood rules matter on the Parkway: only heat-treated firewood bundled in its original packing and bearing a certification seal from the USDA or a state department of agriculture may be brought onto the Parkway. Bring layers, bear-aware food storage, and a full water tank when heading to Parkway sites without hookups.

On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches sit at $225 to $375 per night. You can stretch your budget by booking midweek, traveling in late April or early November (outside peak fall foliage), and filtering for hosts who offer unlimited mileage. Pro tip: prices climb in October when leaf-peepers flood the Parkway, so locking in a cheap RV rental in Blue Ridge two to three months ahead pays off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Blue%20Ridge%2C%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Blue Ridge, Virginia?
Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Blue Ridge, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. You will need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and you'll confirm your identification through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's it, no DMV trip, no test, no waiting. Most guests booking their first Blue Ridge RV trip are surprised how quick the process is from search to confirmation.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/license-typesIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, every booking on RVezy automatically includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Blue Ridge Parkway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you (the guest) choose your coverage level at checkout based on how much extra security you want. If you get a flat near Peaks of Otter or need a battery jump at Explore Park, one call connects you to help anywhere in Virginia. It's a key reason renting an RV in Blue Ridge feels low risk, even for first-timers.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Blue Ridge RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts don't set their own), and refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your plans stay on track. If something like a hurricane remnant or a Parkway closure disrupts travel, RVezy's support team can walk you through your options before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best fall foliage RV rental in Blue Ridge, knowing your cancellation terms are spelled out up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Blue Ridge, VA RV trip?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. The Blue Ridge Parkway is famously dog-friendly: leashed pets are welcome on nearly every trail, overlook, and campground, including Peaks of Otter and Roanoke Mountain Campground. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Blue Ridge, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host about any specifics (some allow multiple dogs, some have a small cleaning fee). Local favorites for four-legged travelers include Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, Mill Mountain Park, and the Roanoke River Greenway. Pro tip: pack a tie-out cable and water bowl, summer temps in the Roanoke Valley regularly hit the mid-80s.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Blue Ridge?
Yes, RV delivery in Blue Ridge is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a motorhome through Virginia mountain curves. Many hosts will deliver right to Explore Park at Milepost 115, Dixie Caverns Campground, or even your private driveway in Roanoke or Bedford County. They'll level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through the propane, generator, and slide-outs before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile round-trip. Pro tip: filter for 'Delivery' on RVezy and message hosts directly to confirm they'll deliver to your exact campground.
roanokecountyparks.com/631/Camping-Cabins-Blue-Ridge-ParkwayHow far can I drive on a Blue Ridge, VA RV trip?
Plenty far, and the destinations within easy range are spectacular. From Blue Ridge, VA, you're about 20 minutes to downtown Roanoke, 1 hour to Peaks of Otter (Milepost 86), 1.5 hours to Natural Bridge State Park, 2 hours to Shenandoah National Park's southern entrance at Rockfish Gap, and roughly 4 hours to Great Smoky Mountains National Park via the full Parkway. Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee after. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking. Pro tip: for a classic Blue Ridge Parkway RV road trip from Blue Ridge, plan Milepost 115 south to Mabry Mill (Milepost 176) and back over a long weekend.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Blue Ridge, VA?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Blue Ridge. Top picks include Explore Park (Milepost 115, just minutes from town, with RV sites, yurts, and cabins on more than 1,100 acres), Peaks of Otter Campground (Milepost 86, classic NPS dry camping at about 2,500 ft elevation), Dixie Caverns Campground in Salem (full hookups and a cave tour onsite), Roanoke Mountain Campground (Milepost 120, NPS site overlooking the city), and Otter Creek Campground (Milepost 60.8, one of the Parkway's lowest at about 800 ft). Pro tip: NPS campgrounds along the Parkway are dry camping only (no hookups) but have dump stations and potable water, so book a private park like Dixie Caverns if you want full hookups for longer stays.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Blue Ridge, VA?
Honest answer: the Blue Ridge Mountains shine in three distinct windows. Mid-April through early June brings wildflowers, rhododendron blooms, and daytime highs of 65 to 78 F. Mid-September through late October is peak fall foliage, the busiest and most photogenic time, with highs in the 55 to 72 F range and crisp nights. Summer (June through August) is warm, green, and great for waterfalls, with highs of 80 to 88 F and pop-up afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is quieter but workable: many Parkway sections close after snow or ice, and NPS campgrounds shut from late October to late May. Pro tip: for the magic foliage shot at Mabry Mill, target the second and third weeks of October.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Blue Ridge?
You'll do great, and Blue Ridge is actually one of the better places to start. Your host will give a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, and backing up, and you can text or call them anytime during your trip. For a first time renting an RV, stick to the Virginia section of the Parkway, the roads here are more pastoral and less curvy than the North Carolina sections south of Asheville. Interstates 81 and 581 are flat and easy. Avoid the Bluff Mountain Tunnel at Milepost 53.1 (13'7" clearance) if your rig is tall. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or campervan under 25 feet for your first Blue Ridge RV trip, it makes parking at Peaks of Otter and Explore Park much easier.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/safety.htmWhat happens if the RV breaks down on the Blue Ridge Parkway?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire near Roanoke Mountain Overlook, a dead battery at Peaks of Otter, or a lockout in downtown Bedford is a single phone call away from help. The roadside team coordinates towing, tire changes, jump starts, and fuel delivery anywhere in Virginia. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting (think: 'how do I reset the inverter?'). Pro tip: cell signal can drop in pockets of the Parkway, so screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact before you head into the mountains, and dial 911 for any true emergency.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV out of Virginia on a road trip?
Yes, most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel, which opens up some incredible RV road trips from Blue Ridge, VA. Popular routes include south on the Parkway into North Carolina (Asheville is about 4 hours), north to Shenandoah National Park (around 2 hours), east toward Virginia Beach (about 4.5 hours), or west to New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia (around 3 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada or Mexico is generally not covered, so confirm any out-of-country plans with your host and RVezy support before booking. Pro tip: share your route with the host before booking so they can flag any mileage caps or tunnel-clearance concerns.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Blue Ridge RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on a Blue Ridge Parkway RV trip, but it's manageable. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Virginia gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average, and you'll find easy fill-ups in Roanoke, Salem, Bedford, and Lynchburg before heading onto the Parkway (there are NO gas stations on the Parkway itself except seasonally at Peaks of Otter). Pro tip: top off before Milepost 86 if heading south, the next reliable fuel is in Floyd or off I-77 near Fancy Gap, about 90 miles further.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Blue Ridge?
For October foliage weekends, book 4 to 6 months ahead. For summer (June through August), 2 to 3 months is comfortable, and shoulder-season trips often have same-week availability. NPS campgrounds along the Parkway (Peaks of Otter, Roanoke Mountain, Otter Creek, Rocky Knob) take reservations through Recreation.gov, with a rolling 6-month booking window. Virginia State Parks like Smith Mountain Lake and Douthat use ReserveVAParks.com. Private parks like Dixie Caverns and Explore Park can usually be booked directly. Pro tip: a few sites at every NPS Parkway campground are first-come, first-served, so if you strike out online, roll in by 11 a.m. on a weekday for a real shot at a walk-up site.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the driving conditions like around Blue Ridge, VA?
Mostly beautiful, occasionally demanding. The Blue Ridge Parkway has a 45 mph max speed limit, no shoulders, frequent curves, and elevation swings, so plan for slower progress than interstate driving. Virginia's stretch (Mileposts 0-216) is generally gentler than North Carolina's, with mainly pastoral terrain and only one tunnel (Bluff Mountain, Milepost 53.1, 13'7" clearance). Interstates 81 and 581 around Roanoke are fast and flat. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, sudden fog above 2,500 feet, and quick afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Winter brings ice and snow closures on the Parkway. Pro tip: check the NPS Real-Time Road Closure Map every morning, sections close fast for weather, fallen trees, or maintenance.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htmWhat amenities will I find at Blue Ridge area campgrounds?
Expect a real range, which is part of the fun. National Park Service campgrounds along the Parkway (Peaks of Otter, Roanoke Mountain, Otter Creek) offer dry camping only: no electric, water, or sewer at sites, but each has a dump station, potable water fill, flush toilets, and trash collection seasonally (late May through late October). Private parks like Dixie Caverns RV Park, Explore Park, and Lynchburg KOA offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry. Pro tip: NPS Parkway sites allow generator use 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., so plan power-hungry tasks (coffee, microwave, AC) inside those windows, and fill your fresh water tank before arriving since site spigots are limited.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's included inside a typical Blue Ridge RV rental?
More than you'd think. Most motorhome rentals in Blue Ridge come fully equipped: a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa sleeping, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and propane furnace), and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, leveling jacks, and a flat-screen TV. Wi-Fi is host-dependent, some include a hotspot, but mountain cell signal is spotty regardless. Linens, kitchen kits, and camping chairs are often offered as add-ons. Pro tip: scan the listing's amenities list closely and message your host to confirm essentials like a coffee maker or backup camera before you book.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Blue Ridge, VA?
Hosts in Blue Ridge offer a lot of helpful extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and towel kits ($25 to $75), kitchen packages ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor mats, generators (sometimes included, sometimes $5 to $15 per hour of use), bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Roanoke Valley, or you can choose delivery (often $2 to $4 per mile). Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage on longer bookings. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit if it's your first time renting, you'll arrive to a ready-to-camp RV at Explore Park or Smith Mountain Lake with zero setup stress.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, with a hold placed on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Blue Ridge RV trip, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, empty the holding tanks at a dump station (Explore Park and Dixie Caverns both have them), and tidy the interior. Pro tip: hosts appreciate communication, send a quick message if anything comes up so it's resolved before dropoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first-time RV itinerary from Blue Ridge, VA?
Here's a perfect 4-day family RV trip from Blue Ridge that locals love. Day 1: pick up the RV (or have it delivered), stock groceries in Roanoke, and camp at Explore Park (Milepost 115). Day 2: drive south on the Parkway to Roanoke Mountain Overlook, then on to Smith Mountain Lake State Park for swimming and a lakeside campsite. Day 3: head north to Peaks of Otter (Milepost 86), hike Sharp Top, and camp at the NPS campground. Day 4: cruise to Natural Bridge State Park, then back to Blue Ridge for dropoff. Pro tip: stop at the Mill Mountain Star in Roanoke at sunset, it's an iconic photo spot and one of the most beloved landmarks on any Blue Ridge RV trip.
