Camping near Buchanan, Virginia
Buchanan sits along the James River in Botetourt County, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western Virginia. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because it puts campers within short reach of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, and the upper James River corridor.
Campground options nearby cover a range of styles. Limestone Park and Middle Creek Campground offer smaller, creekside RV and tent sites close to town, with Middle Creek sitting at the foot of Fork Mountain and offering 30 and 30/50 amp sites plus some full-hookup sites. A short drive up the Parkway leads to Peaks of Otter Campground, a National Park Service facility at Milepost 85.6.
For families wanting resort-style amenities, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort and Jellystone Park At Natural Bridge sit within a short drive north of Buchanan, both offering pools, splash areas, and organized activities.
Things to do around Buchanan
The upper James River runs through Buchanan and supports kayaking, tubing, and fishing right from town. Middle Creek Campground promotes access to the James for paddling, plus on-site fishing and hiking, and sits just under seven miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway at Powell's Gap.
Along the Parkway, the Peaks of Otter area at Milepost 85.6 includes several trails, with Sharp Top, Elk Run, Harkening Hill, and Johnson Farm all starting near the campground. Abbott Lake is stocked with smallmouth bass and bluegill and open to anglers holding a valid Virginia or North Carolina fishing license.
North of town, Natural Bridge State Park, Natural Bridge Caverns, and Virginia Safari Park draw day-trippers, and both Jellystone properties add pools, mini-golf, water slides, and character events geared to kids.

The Buchanan area has a defined camping season that tracks the Blue Ridge Parkway calendar. Peaks of Otter Campground operates roughly late May through late October, and outside those months the campground is closed and higher-elevation sections of the Parkway can shut for ice or fog.
Private campgrounds run longer seasons. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort operates mid-March through mid-November, with themed weekends running across the season, including popular pre-Halloween events that book out well ahead.
Summer brings the warmest weather and the busiest sites, especially on holiday weekends. Fall foliage along the Parkway typically peaks in mid-October and draws heavy weekend traffic to Peaks of Otter and nearby overlooks. Spring is quieter, with cool nights, wildflowers, and higher rainfall along the ridges.

How to book a site
Peaks of Otter Campground is a federal facility. About 60 sites are bookable in advance through Recreation.gov, and 79 first-come, first-served sites are held at the campground kiosk and cannot be tracked online. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window, and fall foliage weekends fill quickly.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Middle Creek Campground takes reservations directly through middlecreekcampground.com, and Jellystone Park At Natural Bridge books through campjellystone.com or by phone, with busy summer and Halloween weekends filling far in advance.
For RV renters, confirm site length, hookup type, and access road conditions before booking. Peaks of Otter has no hookups and is suited to self-contained rigs.
What to expect on arrival
Approach roads vary. The route into Middle Creek Campground climbs a paved rural mountain road that is narrow and curvy in places, so drivers of larger rigs should time arrival to avoid meeting oncoming traffic and lower their listed RV size during booking to see appropriate sites. Peaks of Otter is reached via the Blue Ridge Parkway near Milepost 86, with sites built into terraced, wooded terrain on the mountainside.
Cell coverage is limited in the mountains. Middle Creek notes reception varies by carrier and drops off in the shadow of Fork Mountain, and Peaks of Otter has minimal service across major carriers.
All Blue Ridge Parkway sites enforce a firewood rule: only heat-treated, certified bundles may be brought onto the Parkway, though dead-and-down wood may be collected near campsites. Bear-aware food storage is expected throughout the region.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Buchanan, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Buchanan, VA?
RV rental in Buchanan is one of the better values in Virginia's Blue Ridge, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $295 per night. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can find cheap RV rental Buchanan options by booking mid-week or during shoulder seasons like late April or early November. Peak fall foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway (early to mid-October) books up fast and prices climb, so reserve early to lock in a better rate. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message a few hosts directly to ask about multi-night discounts, especially for stays of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buchanan,%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Buchanan, VA?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Buchanan, VA, even for a large Class A or fifth wheel. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your everyday license works just fine. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during checkout, so there are no extra trips to a DMV office. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. With paperwork out of the way, you can focus on the fun part: planning your Blue Ridge Parkway drive.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/license-typesIs RV rental in Buchanan, VA protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Buchanan booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included automatically, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your trip, whether that is a basic plan or a higher tier with a lower deductible, and the plan covers most damage to the vehicle so you can drive the twisty sections near Apple Orchard Mountain with peace of mind. If you have questions during the trip, RVezy's support team is reachable any time, day or night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Buchanan RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can change your mind without penalty. Refund amounts after that depend on how far in advance you cancel, and you will see the exact terms before you confirm payment. If something unexpected comes up, contact RVezy support directly rather than the host, since cancellations are handled by the platform. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy will refund your booking or help you find a comparable RV. That structure makes it easy to commit to your Buchanan RV trip even if your schedule is not 100% locked in yet.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental Buchanan, VA?
Absolutely, and Buchanan is a fantastic dog town. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Buchanan, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings whose hosts welcome four-legged guests. Once you arrive, dogs are allowed on most trails in the surrounding Jefferson National Forest and along the Appalachian Trail crossings near Route 43, as long as they are leashed. The town park on the James River is a great spot for a quick walk, and many sites at Peaks of Otter Campground (about 25 minutes up the Parkway) accept leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about a fenced-yard pickup if your pup is a flight risk.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Buchanan?
Yes, RV delivery in Buchanan is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you have never towed before. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to nearby campgrounds like Wildwood Campground & RV Park, Middle Creek Campground, or Peaks of Otter Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, and check each listing for the delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a pre-stocked add-on (linens, camp chairs, propane) so you can show up with groceries and start your weekend right away.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buchanan,%20VirginiaHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Buchanan, VA?

From Buchanan it is roughly 25 miles to Roanoke, 35 miles to Lexington, 110 miles to Shenandoah National Park's southern entrance at Rockfish Gap, and about 280 miles to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Filter for unlimited mileage upfront if you are planning a big loop.
virginiadot.org/travel/Where are the best campgrounds near Buchanan, VA?

recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234023When is the best time of year for a Buchanan, VA RV trip?
Buchanan is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot for an RV trip is mid-April through late October. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers, daytime highs in the 60s to 70s F, and quiet campgrounds. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s F, perfect for tubing the James River. The crown jewel is fall foliage from late September through mid-October, when the Blue Ridge Parkway turns brilliant red and gold and daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 60s F. Winter is mild in the valley but the Parkway often closes due to ice, so plan lower-elevation routes. Pro tip: target the second weekend of October for peak color, and book at least three months in advance.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Buchanan?
You will be just fine, especially in Buchanan. First time renting an RV is much easier here than in a big city: the roads around town are wide, traffic is light, and Interstate 81 is straightforward. Every RVezy host gives you a full walk-through at pickup, covering driving, the propane system, slide-outs, tanks, and the generator, and you can text them mid-trip with questions. If you are nervous about handling the rig, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Buchanan, both of which drive much like a large van. Pro tip: avoid the Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels with very tall rigs and use Route 11 or I-81 to reposition instead.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/driving-on-the-parkway.htmWhat if something breaks down during my Buchanan RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 43 or a dead battery at Peaks of Otter is one phone call away from help. Your host is also the fastest source for quirks specific to their RV, like the trick to relighting the water heater, and most respond within minutes. For mechanical issues, dispatch can arrange a technician or a tow to a service center in Roanoke, about 25 miles south, which has plenty of RV-capable shops. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave town, since cell coverage drops in pockets along the Parkway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Buchanan, VA?
An RV road trip from Buchanan, VA opens up some of the East Coast's most scenic miles. Top routes include: the full Blue Ridge Parkway south to Asheville, NC (about 250 miles of pure scenery); north on Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park (roughly 75 miles to the southern entrance at Rockfish Gap); a Virginia history loop through Lexington, Staunton, and Charlottesville (under 120 miles); and a coastal swing to Virginia Beach (about 250 miles east on I-64). Cross-border travel into other US states is straightforward and your protection package follows you, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: split the Parkway into two-day chunks so you can actually stop at overlooks.
virginia.org/things-to-do/road-trips/How much should I budget for fuel on a Buchanan RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailer setups out of Buchanan average 8-12 miles per gallon, while Class B campervans can hit 18-20 MPG. Virginia gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average, with multiple stations right at I-81 exit 162 in Buchanan and larger truck-friendly stops in nearby Troutville and Lexington. For a typical 4-night trip covering 300 miles, budget roughly $120-$180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Buchanan or Lexington before heading onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where there are no gas stations along the entire 469-mile route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Buchanan?
For the best campgrounds near Buchanan, VA book as early as you can, especially for weekends. National Park Service sites like Peaks of Otter Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway open reservations six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and fall color weekends (late September through mid-October) often fill within hours of release. State and private parks like Douthat State Park (about 40 minutes northwest) and Wildwood Campground in Buchanan typically open bookings 11 months out via Virginia State Parks' Reserve America system. For summer weekdays you can often grab a spot two to four weeks out. Pro tip: if a Parkway site looks full, check back on Sunday evenings when cancellations get released.
recreation.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Buchanan?
Driving around Buchanan is more relaxed than most Virginia destinations. Interstate 81 runs north-south right past town and is the easiest route for big rigs, while US Route 11 (Main Street) is a wide, low-traffic alternative. The Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous but slower, with a 45 MPH speed limit, no commercial trucks, and several tunnels (the lowest clearance south of Buchanan is around 10'6"), so measure your rig before heading up. Route 43 to the Parkway climbs steeply with switchbacks, fine for most RVs but go slow in low gear. Winter ice can close Parkway sections from December through March. Pro tip: download offline maps before you head into the mountains, since cell service is spotty above 2,000 feet.
virginiadot.org/travel/511.aspWhat hookups and dump stations are available near Buchanan?
You'll find solid infrastructure for RV camping Buchanan, VA. Wildwood Campground & RV Park in town offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) at most sites, plus an on-site dump station. Middle Creek Campground has water and electric with a central dump. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, Peaks of Otter Campground has potable water fill stations and a dump station near the entrance but no individual hookups, which is typical for National Park Service campgrounds. Douthat State Park, about 40 minutes away, has full hookup loops. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Buchanan before heading up to the Parkway, and dump on the way back down so you're traveling lighter on the climb.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat amenities will my Buchanan RV rental come with?
Most motorhome rental Buchanan listings come fully equipped and ready for the Blue Ridge: a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both AC and propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for everyone on board. Larger Class A and Class C units often include a generator, outdoor speakers, and a TV; many travel trailers and fifth wheels add outdoor kitchens and awnings, perfect for evenings on the James River. WiFi varies, so if you are working remotely, look for listings that include a cell-signal booster or mobile hotspot. Pro tip: check the listing photos for an outdoor shower, ideal after a tubing day on the river.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buchanan,%20VirginiaWhat popular add-ons can I get with my Buchanan RV rental?
Hosts in Buchanan offer some genuinely useful add-ons that take the work out of planning. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25-$75), kitchen kits with pots, pans and coffee makers, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators for boondocking on the Parkway, bike racks for the Upper James River Bicentennial Bicycle Trail, and pre-filled propane and fresh water tanks. Many hosts also offer delivery, setup, and pickup for a flat fee or per-mile rate, which is especially handy if you're staying at Peaks of Otter or North Creek Campground. Mileage is set per listing, so look for unlimited miles if you're doing a longer loop. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in one message to the host for a possible package discount.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Buchanan, VA?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, so no cash or paper checks change hands with the host. When you book, you pay the rental total plus your chosen protection plan using a credit or debit card, and the security deposit is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card a few days before pickup, not a charge. Hold amounts vary by listing and are released within a few days after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and return, so you have a clear record if any questions come up later.
