Campgrounds and RV parks near Castlewood, VA

Castlewood sits in Russell County in far southwestern Virginia, along the Clinch River and within the Appalachian Mountains. The town is a practical base for RV trips built around river recreation, cavern tours, and the Spearhead Trails off-highway network. The area sits a few miles from the Clinch River and overlooks Clinch Mountain. RV options within a short drive include Camp Mountventures, Shadrack Campground, and Copperhead Ridge Glamping & RV Park in the immediate Clinch Valley area. Farther out, Appalachian Caverns Campground in Blountville, Tennessee, pairs a campground with guided cave tours, and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park in Grundy offers ride-out access to the Coal Canyon Trail System. Southern Gap is now operated as part of Breaks Interstate Park following a late-2025 acquisition, and continues to serve as the Coal Canyon trailhead. Expect a rural setting with limited big-box services. Abingdon, St. Paul, and Bristol are the closest towns for groceries, propane, and RV supplies, and cell service can be spotty in the hollows and on ridgetops.

Private campgrounds around Castlewood generally accept reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or through third-party booking platforms. Summer weekends, Bristol race weekends, and fall foliage weekends book earliest and can fill months ahead, so lock in dates once travel is confirmed. Virginia State Parks use a central reservation system, and Breaks Interstate Park handles its own bookings, including the Southern Gap site acquired in late 2025. Existing Southern Gap reservations were transferred into the Breaks reservation system after the ownership change. ATV permits are handled separately from campground bookings. Riders can purchase 3-day or annual permits before arriving, every rider needs one including kids, and permits can be printed or shown on a phone. Buying permits online through Spearhead Trails before the trip avoids delays at the trailhead.
