Campgrounds near Clifton Forge
Clifton Forge sits in the Alleghany Highlands of western Virginia, at the junction of Interstate 64 and U.S. 220, with the Jackson River running through town. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of Douthat State Park, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, and several private riverside campgrounds along the Cowpasture and Jackson rivers.
Douthat State Park anchors the area's camping. Reached from I-64 Exit 27, the park offers site-specific reservations across multiple campgrounds, including Whispering Pines and White Oak, plus cabins and lodges. It is one of Virginia's original six state parks, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Private options round out the mix. Peaceful River Campground sits on the Cowpasture River near Millboro with tent sites and RV hookups. Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing spreads over 500 acres, with Craig Creek stretching nearly half a mile through the property. Limestone Park provides an additional local option close to town.
Things to do near Clifton Forge
Douthat State Park is the primary draw, with more than 40 miles of wooded hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult, mountain biking, six miles of bridle trails, a 50-acre lake stocked with trout, a swimming beach, and boat rentals. The lake supports kayaking, hydrobike and paddleboard rentals, and fishing for bass, trout, and crappie.
Outside the park, Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing offers a Giant Swing, Team Building, Low Ropes, High Ropes, Caving, Rock Climbing, and mountain bike lessons and guided trips, plus tubing and canoeing on Craig Creek. The Jackson and Cowpasture rivers provide additional fishing and paddling, and the C&O Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge covers regional railroad history.
The surrounding George Washington and Jefferson National Forest adds gravel roads, backcountry trails, and scenic drives. Roanoke lies about an hour south for restaurants, groceries, and RV services.

Peak season at Douthat State Park runs April through October, and this is the most popular time for hiking, camping, and water sports. The swimming beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and trout-stocked waters are stocked twice weekly through the high season. The beach area is open May through October for unguarded swimming within the roped area.
Spring brings variable weather, wildflowers, and stocked streams. Fall delivers strong leaf color across the Alleghany Highlands and cooler nights, making it a popular window for weekend trips. Campsites can book up fast, especially on summer and holiday weekends, so booking a minimum of six months in advance is advisable.
Winter camping is limited. At Douthat State Park, Whispering Pines is the only campground open year-round, and from November through March water is unavailable at individual campsites because of freezing weather. Cabins remain available for winter rentals. Many private campgrounds reduce services or close in the coldest months.
Booking a campsite near Clifton Forge
Douthat State Park sites are reserved through the Virginia State Parks reservation system, online or by phone at 800-933-PARK. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance, campsites may be reserved up until 2 p.m. on the date of arrival, and cabin reservations should be made before midnight on the day prior to arrival. Payment in full by credit card is required when reserving online. Reservations are site-specific in all campgrounds.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Peaceful River Campground requires advance reservations. Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing books cabins and campsites directly through its website or by phone. For summer and holiday weekends, booking six months ahead is a reasonable target.
What to expect
Terrain is mountainous, with narrow secondary roads and steep grades approaching some campgrounds. Larger rigs should confirm access and site length before booking, particularly at private and forest campgrounds. At White Oak, caution is advised with large rigs because the low-water bridge has steep approach and departure angles. Douthat's campgrounds are known for spacious sites, and there are two dump stations on the exit route.
Cell coverage is limited in and around the state park and along river campgrounds; there is very little Verizon cell service in the park. Plan for offline maps and download reservations and directions before leaving town. Generators may not be used in any campgrounds at Douthat.
Black bears are present across the surrounding national forest, so food and trash should be stored securely. Firewood is for sale at the park, and because of the possibility of destructive invasive species, visitors should not bring firewood from outside.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Clifton Forge, VA?

You can find a cheap RV rental in Clifton Forge by booking midweek, traveling in the shoulder seasons (April to early June or late September to October), or choosing an older travel trailer. Pro tip: many local hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, which makes a longer Clifton Forge RV trip exploring Douthat State Park and the C and O Railway Heritage Center even better value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%20Forge,%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Clifton Forge, Virginia?
Great news for first time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clifton Forge. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most travelers are surprised how quick and paperwork-free the process is before hitting Route 220 north toward the mountains.

Every RV rental in Clifton Forge booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered before you even pull onto Interstate 64. The protection plan helps cover most damages to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind on mountain roads around Douthat State Park or along the Blue Ridge Parkway. During checkout, you choose your level of coverage (not the host) based on how much extra protection you want. Pro tip: do a careful walkthrough video with your host at pickup so any pre-existing scuffs are documented and you can relax for the rest of your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Clifton Forge RV trip?
Booking your Clifton Forge RV trip is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book. That means you can lock in the perfect rig for fall foliage season at Douthat State Park without second-guessing the dates. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel and whether unexpected events like severe weather affect your trip, which RVezy reviews on a case-by-case basis. You'll see the exact terms before you confirm payment. Pro tip: book early to secure October weekends (peak leaf-peeping in the George Washington National Forest) and you'll still have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Clifton Forge RV rental?
Absolutely, and the Alleghany Highlands is a dream destination for dogs. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Clifton Forge: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see rigs that welcome your pup. Douthat State Park allows leashed dogs on more than 40 miles of trails and even on the swimming beach's pet section, and the Jackson River Scenic Trail (a 14 mile rail-trail starting just outside town in Covington) is paw-perfect for morning walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per trip) and ask about features like easy-clean flooring, and you're ready for a Clifton Forge RV trip with the whole family, four legs included.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Clifton Forge?
Yes, RV delivery in Clifton Forge is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first time renters who'd rather skip the drive. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Douthat State Park, Bolar Mountain Recreation Area on Lake Moomaw, or a private property of your choice. They'll level the rig, connect water and electric hookups, and walk you through everything from the propane stove to the awning. Delivery fees are typically calculated per mile from the host's location, so closer drops cost less. Pro tip: filter for Delivery on RVezy and message hosts about a flat rate to popular sites like White Oak Campground at Douthat.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Clifton Forge?
Clifton Forge is a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip because so many bucket-list destinations are within a half-day drive. Lexington and the Natural Bridge State Park sit about 30 miles east, the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs is just 25 miles north, Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Parkway are roughly 60 miles southeast, Shenandoah National Park's south entrance is about 90 miles northeast, and the New River Gorge in West Virginia is around 110 miles west. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and you can often find an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you plan a longer loop. Pro tip: filter listings by mileage allowance before booking and message the host to confirm overage rates (typically $0.30 to $0.45 per mile).
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Clifton Forge, VA?
You're in one of Virginia's best camping regions. The top pick is Douthat State Park (about 8 miles north on Route 629), with three RV-friendly campgrounds (Lakeside, Whispering Pines, and White Oak) plus a 50 acre lake. Bolar Mountain Recreation Area on Lake Moomaw, around 30 miles north in the George Washington National Forest, has waterfront sites and a swim beach. Morris Hill Campground, also on Lake Moomaw, is great for quieter stays. Closer to town, Buckhorn Store and Campground on Douthat Road offers full hookups at 25 sites. Pro tip: Douthat books up months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve early through Virginia State Parks and consider midweek for last-minute availability for your Clifton Forge RV trip.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Clifton Forge?
Clifton Forge truly has four distinct seasons, and each one shines for different reasons. Late April through June brings 60 to 80 degree days, wildflowers, and dogwood blooms along the Jackson River. July and August are warm and humid (highs around 85) but ideal for swimming at Douthat Lake. September and October are the local favorite: crisp 50 to 70 degree weather and spectacular fall foliage that draws photographers from across Virginia, typically peaking around mid to late October. Winters are cool (30s to 40s) with occasional snow, and several hosts offer cold-weather-equipped rigs with heated tanks for off-season getaways. Pro tip: book your fall foliage rental by July to snag the best motorhome rental in Clifton Forge for peak color weekends.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never rented an RV before. Is renting in Clifton Forge beginner-friendly?
Definitely. Clifton Forge is one of the most welcoming places for first time renting an RV because the roads are scenic but manageable, distances to campgrounds are short, and the camping community is friendly. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers driving, slide-outs, hookups, dumping, and propane, so you're never left guessing. You can also message hosts ahead of time with any question, no matter how small. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip, then point it 8 miles north to Douthat State Park, where pull-through sites and easy navigation make setup a breeze. You'll feel like a pro by the second night.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Clifton Forge booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away whether you're at Lake Moomaw or driving over Warm Springs Mountain on Route 39. Roadside assistance covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. For mechanical questions or how-to help, message your host directly through the RVezy app: most are local to the Alleghany Highlands and know exactly which dump station or service center to point you to. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number to your phone before leaving Clifton Forge, since cell service can be spotty in deeper sections of the George Washington National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the best RV road trip from Clifton Forge?
An RV road trip from Clifton Forge can easily turn into a week of unforgettable stops. A favorite loop heads north on Route 220 to Hot Springs (25 miles) for a soak, continues to Lake Moomaw for two nights of waterfront camping, then loops south to Lexington (30 miles east) for history and the Virginia Horse Center, before ending with a Blue Ridge Parkway leg through Peaks of Otter (about 75 miles). Cross-border into West Virginia for the New River Gorge National Park (around 110 miles west) is also doable; just confirm with your host that out-of-state travel is allowed (it usually is within the US). Note: trips to Mexico are not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: build in two-night stays to avoid daily setup and truly enjoy the scenery.
nps.gov/neri/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I expect?
Budgeting for fuel on a Clifton Forge RV trip is straightforward once you know what to expect. Class A motorhomes typically get 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and tow vehicles with travel trailers around 10 to 13 MPG. Gas in the Clifton Forge and Covington area generally tracks slightly below the Virginia state average. The mountainous terrain on Route 220 and Interstate 64 will dip mileage a bit, so plan for the lower end of those ranges. Pro tip: fuel up in Clifton Forge or Covington (cheaper than Hot Springs), and use the GasBuddy app, since smaller mountain towns can have a $0.30 per gallon spread.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clifton Forge?
Booking early is the single best move for a smooth Clifton Forge RV trip. Douthat State Park opens reservations 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks website, and prime summer and October foliage weekends often fill within days of opening. Lake Moomaw campgrounds (Bolar Mountain and Morris Hill) are bookable on Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead. Private parks like Buckhorn Store and Campground typically take phone reservations 3 to 6 months out. Midweek and shoulder season (April, May, late September) usually have availability within a few weeks. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, book the RV first, then chase whichever campground is open, since RV delivery in Clifton Forge means you can land just about anywhere.
reservevaparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Clifton Forge?
Driving an RV around Clifton Forge is genuinely enjoyable. Interstate 64 runs right through town with easy on/off ramps, and Route 220 north to Hot Springs is a well-maintained two lane mountain highway. You'll encounter some grades and curves on Route 39 toward Goshen Pass and on the back roads to Lake Moomaw, but nothing that requires special experience, just steady speeds and lower gears on descents. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk and the occasional logging truck on Forest Service roads. Snow can briefly affect winter travel at higher elevations. Pro tip: avoid the narrow low-water bridge approach to Douthat's White Oak Campground with rigs over 30 feet, and take the main park entrance off Route 629 instead for a stress-free arrival.

Most listings include a TV, and many have onboard generators for off-grid power at spots like Lake Moomaw. WiFi varies (cell service can be spotty in the George Washington National Forest), so plan for a digital detox or a hotspot. Linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are often included or available as add-ons. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host about anything specific (like a coffee maker or kids' bedding) before you book your RV camping in Clifton Forge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%20Forge,%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Clifton Forge hosts offer some genuinely helpful add-ons that can make your trip easier. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens for a near-zero-effort getaway, perfect for a family RV trip in Clifton Forge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%20Forge,%20VirginiaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Clifton Forge happens securely through RVezy: there's no cash, no checks, and no awkward exchanges with your host. You'll pay your rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. Deposit amounts are set by the host and typically run $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. As long as you return the rig in the condition you received it (clean, undamaged, with tanks dumped if required), the hold is released after your trip, usually within a few business days. Pro tip: do a 360 degree walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff with your host present, time-stamped on your phone, and you'll sidestep nearly every deposit dispute before your Clifton Forge RV trip even ends.
