Campgrounds near Concord, Virginia
Concord sits in Campbell County in Central Virginia, roughly midway between Lynchburg and Appomattox. The area gives RV travelers quick access to the James River, the Blue Ridge foothills, and the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, with several developed campgrounds within a short drive.
Close-in private options include Paradise Lake Family Campground and Lynchburg RV Resort, both convenient bases for exploring the Lynchburg metro. For state-park camping, Horseshoe Campground at James River State Park sits within the 1,561-acre park, which features roughly three miles of James River shoreline, and Holliday Lake State Park sits within the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, minutes from Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
West of Concord, the Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday sits near the Blue Ridge Parkway, a short drive from downtown Lynchburg, making it a useful staging point for Parkway day trips, Peaks of Otter, and Natural Bridge.
Things to do near Concord
Water recreation drives most trip plans. Fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill is popular at Holliday Lake, and a nearby delayed-harvest trout stream allows anglers to fish for brown and rainbow trout. Swimming at the park beach and the Critter Hole play area are visitor favorites, and the park rents canoes, kayaks, jon boats, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats.
At James River State Park, paddling and smallmouth bass fishing are the main draws. The park has 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and bridle use, and the Tye River Overlook, Green Hill Pond Trail, and the fishing pier are wheelchair-accessible.
History rounds out an itinerary: Holliday Lake is just minutes from Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1865. The Blue Ridge Parkway, downtown Lynchburg, and Peaks of Otter are all within reach for day trips.

Spring and fall are the sweet spot. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is manageable, and foliage peaks in October along the Blue Ridge. State-park campgrounds book quickly on weekends in these shoulder months, so reserve as early as possible.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Lake swimming and paddling are at their best, but sites at Holliday Lake and James River fill fastest around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. The Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday operates from April through November, matching the region's main camping season.
Winter trims options. Most Virginia state park full-service campgrounds, including those at James River and Holliday Lake, are open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Winters are quiet but chillier with limited activities, and it is worth checking park updates for closures or changes in operating hours before a visit.
How to book campgrounds near Concord
Virginia State Parks handle reservations through the state parks reservation system. Reservations can be made online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK (7275) up to 11 months in advance, and same-day until 2 p.m. Popular summer and fall weekends at Holliday Lake and James River can sell out well before the trip.
Some campers book several months in advance, so on high-demand weekends it can be very difficult to get a site at Horseshoe Campground at James River State Park. If a preferred date is full, keep checking for cancellations or set a text alert with a scanning service.
Private parks book directly. Paradise Lake Family Campground, Lynchburg RV Resort, and the Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday all take reservations through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends typically require multi-night minimums.
What to expect on arrival
Sites vary by park. Horseshoe Campground has 10 pull-through sites, 20 covered horse stalls, and five tent pads, and each site has a fire-ring grill, picnic table, and lantern hanger, with a full-service bathhouse nearby. Electric pedestals include 20, 30, and 50-amp outlets, and vehicles up to 40 feet are allowed. Sites offer water and electric hookups, but visitors use the dump station near the entrance of the park.
Holliday Lake is more remote. Cell service can be limited, so download maps ahead of time and bring provisions from Appomattox or Lynchburg before heading in.
Firewood rules matter. Virginia State Parks asks visitors not to bring firewood from home. Buy it at the park or in the park's locality, and burn any wood brought in fully before leaving. Pets are welcome at most sites when leashed.
