Campgrounds near Covington, Virginia
Covington sits in the Alleghany Highlands of western Virginia, at the confluence of the Jackson River and Dunlap Creek, surrounded by state parks and national forest land on both sides of the Virginia and West Virginia border. It works well as a base for RV travelers because Douthat State Park lies roughly an hour to the northeast, while Watoga State Park and Moncove Lake State Park sit across the West Virginia line to the west and northwest.
The closest developed camping is at Douthat State Park, one of the six original Virginia State Parks that opened in 1936, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whispering Pines and White Oak are two of its campgrounds, with a 50-acre trout-stocked lake at the center of the park.
Other options include Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, a private adventure basecamp southeast of Covington near the Jefferson National Forest, plus Riverside at Watoga State Park along the Greenbrier River and Moncove Lake State Park near Gap Mills, West Virginia. Together these give RV renters a mix of hookup sites, primitive sites, and full-service state park amenities within a manageable drive.
Things to do near Covington
Douthat Lake anchors most day plans in the area. RV renters can swim at the roped beach from May through October, launch a kayak or fish for stocked trout, largemouth bass, and crappie, and use more than 40 miles of wooded trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing runs tubing, canoeing, and shuttle trips, along with disc golf, mountain biking, and hiking on its own trail network. The property also sits near well-known Roanoke-area routes like McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon's Tooth.
Across the West Virginia line, Riverside at Watoga State Park puts RV renters on the Greenbrier River and steps from the Greenbrier River Trail, a long-distance rail-trail popular with cyclists. Moncove Lake adds flatwater paddling, a seasonal swimming pool, and fall hawk watching under the eastern flyway.

Peak season across the region runs April through October, which is when most campgrounds are open and when swimming, boating, and trout stocking are active. At Douthat State Park, the swimming beach is open May through October within the roped area, with lifeguarded periods around the core summer weeks.
Spring and fall are the mildest windows for RV travel and typically have the best foliage and wildflower viewing, though nights in the Alleghenies can still drop close to freezing in March and November. Summer weekends and federal holidays fill fastest, especially at lakeside sites, so booking well in advance is important.
Winter access is limited. Whispering Pines is the only Douthat campground that stays open year-round, though water is unavailable at individual sites from November through March due to freezing weather, and cabins are available for cool-weather stays. Watoga's Riverside campground runs from April into October, while Moncove Lake camping is open spring through fall, weather permitting.
How to book a campsite
Virginia State Park campsites, including those at Douthat, are booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system online or by calling 800-933-PARK. Reservations open 11 months in advance, and same-day camping reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. For popular weekends at Whispering Pines and White Oak, booking at least six months out is recommended.
West Virginia state parks use a separate system. Sites at Riverside in Watoga State Park and at Moncove Lake State Park can be reserved anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office; at Moncove Lake, sites are reservable in the Memorial Day through Labor Day window and then run first-come, first-served after Labor Day through October.
Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing is a private operator and is booked directly through the property. Check RV length limits, hookup type, and check-in windows before locking in dates.
What to expect on-site
At Douthat, sites in Whispering Pines and White Oak generally offer electric and water hookups, with dump stations in the park and some sites able to accommodate RVs up to about 50 feet. Generators are prohibited in the campgrounds, and reservations are site-specific.
Riverside at Watoga has electric hookups at most RV sites but no individual water or sewer, with water fill points and a dump station elsewhere in the park, plus bathhouses, coin laundry, and a dishwashing station. Moncove Lake has two loops totaling 48 sites, 34 of them with electric, plus a central bathhouse, dump station, and playground.
Cell and data service is limited to poor in the mountain campgrounds around Douthat and at Moncove Lake, so download maps and reservations in advance. Black bears, deer, and wild turkey are all present, so use provided food storage practices and keep pets leashed.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included when I rent an RV in Covington, VA?
Yes. Every RV rental in Covington, VA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests with real peace of mind. Protection plans help cover damage to the RV and are not traditional auto insurance, but they provide meaningful financial protection while you travel. During booking you (the guest, not the host) choose your protection level, so you can pick coverage that fits your trip and budget. That built-in safety net is one big reason first-time renters feel confident exploring the Allegheny Mountains and Lake Moomaw from Covington.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Covington RV trip plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Covington, VA, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Depending on how far in advance you cancel, different refund options may apply. The cancellation policy is handled at the RVezy account level rather than displayed on each listing. If plans shift, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options, no host negotiation required.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Covington?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental Covington options are easy to find: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see motorhomes and trailers where pups are welcome (hosts set their own pet rules and may charge a small cleaning fee). Your dog will love the area: Douthat State Park allows leashed pets on its hiking trails, Lake Moomaw's Morris Hill area is dog-friendly, and the Jackson River Scenic Trail right in Covington is a flat, shaded, leash-friendly walk along the river. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a towel, because most dogs cannot resist a dip in Wilson Creek at Douthat.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Covington?
Yes, RV delivery Covington is a popular option and a great choice for first-timers. Many hosts will drive the RV right to your campsite at Douthat State Park, Morris Hill Campground at Lake Moomaw, or to your driveway in town, then level it, hook up power and water, and give you a full walkthrough before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, so destinations within Alleghany or Bath County are most affordable. To find delivery-ready listings, use the Delivery filter on RVezy. Pro tip: book a delivered trailer at Douthat's White Oak loop and you can spend your whole trip hiking, swimming, and grilling instead of towing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covington,VirginiaHow far can I travel from Covington on a typical RV rental?
Pretty far, especially with an RV rental with unlimited mileage. Hosts in Covington set their own mileage policies, with many including 100 to 150 free miles per night and a per-mile fee beyond that, while others offer unlimited mileage packages that are perfect for longer loops. From Covington you can reach Douthat State Park in about 30 minutes, Lake Moomaw in roughly 45 minutes, Lexington and the Natural Bridge in about an hour, Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Parkway in around 75 minutes, and New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia in roughly 2.5 hours. Filter by unlimited mileage on RVezy if you are planning a bigger Virginia RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covington,VirginiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Covington, VA for RVs?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Covington for RV camping include Douthat State Park (about 25 miles east near Millboro), with campsites across the Lakeside, Whispering Pines, and White Oak loops and water/electric hookups. Morris Hill Campground sits above Lake Moomaw with electric sites, a dump station, and access to the swim beach. Bolar Mountain Recreation Area on the north end of Lake Moomaw offers electric sites from spring through fall. For full hookups, private parks just outside town and Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista are reliable options. Reserve Douthat 30 or more days ahead in summer; sites go fast.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Covington?
The sweet spot is mid-April through late October. May and June bring 70 to 80F days, blooming mountain laurel, and stocked trout in Douthat Lake. Late September through the third week of October delivers Virginia's famous fall foliage across the Alleghenies, with crisp 60s during the day and cool 40s at night that are perfect for campfires. July and August are warm (mid 80s) and great for swimming at Lake Moomaw, though weekends book up. Winters are mild compared to the high mountains but can dip into the 20s, and many forest service campgrounds close November through March. Booking a Covington RV trip in shoulder season usually means lower nightly rates too.
weather.gov/rnk/I'm a first-time renter. How do I know I'll be okay driving the RV?
First time renting an RV? You will be in good hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full in-person orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and the dump procedure, and you can message or call them anytime during your trip. Covington itself is easy: Interstate 64 runs straight through town with wide lanes, and the routes to Douthat State Park, Lake Moomaw, and the Homestead in Hot Springs are well-paved two-lane mountain roads. If you would rather skip towing, book a delivered trailer and the host handles setup. RVezy's support team is also available if you ever feel stuck.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down near Covington?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Covington, VA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or tow is just a phone call away, whether you are on Interstate 64, deep in George Washington National Forest, or up at Bolar Mountain on Lake Moomaw. Your host is also typically a quick call away and knows the RV inside-out. Pro tip: cell signal can drop in mountain hollows around Douthat and Lake Moomaw, so screenshot the roadside assistance number before leaving Covington and note that Verizon tends to have the best coverage in the Alleghany Highlands.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an RV rental from Covington across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome, which makes Covington a great launch pad. Popular RV road trip from Covington routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway down toward Asheville, North Carolina; New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia (about 2.5 hours); Shenandoah National Park to the north (about 2 hours); and the Outer Banks (about 6 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host through the listing before booking if that is your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Confirm any cross-border details in writing through RVezy chat for a smooth trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Covington?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. Virginia gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and diesel is widely available along Interstate 64. Realistic fuel economy is about 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 16 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle MPG drops by roughly 30 percent when pulling a travel trailer. A weekend loop from Covington to Douthat State Park and Lake Moomaw (about 120 miles round trip) usually runs $40 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Covington or Lexington, not at smaller mountain stations where prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Covington?
For summer weekends and fall foliage trips, book as early as you can. Douthat State Park sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through Virginia State Parks reservations, and the popular Lakeside and White Oak loops sell out 60 to 90 days ahead for any weekend between Memorial Day and mid-October. Morris Hill, Bolar Mountain, and other George Washington National Forest sites at Lake Moomaw are bookable through Recreation.gov, typically six months ahead. For midweek trips or shoulder season, 1 to 2 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: if Douthat is full, check for cancellations on Sunday and Monday mornings, when reservations often free up.
reservevaparks.com/What are local driving conditions like around Covington?
Driving here is mostly relaxed mountain motoring. Interstate 64 cuts right through Covington with two wide lanes each direction, easy on-ramps, and gentle grades, making it comfortable for first-time RV drivers. US 220 north toward Hot Springs and Warm Springs has a few curvy sections and one steep grade near Falling Spring Falls, so downshift and take it slow. State Route 39 west toward Lake Moomaw is winding but scenic. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, occasional fog in the river valleys, and brief snow squalls between December and February. Avoid taking a large motorhome up narrow forest roads to Bolar Mountain's upper loops; stick to the main paved access.
511virginia.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Covington?
Most campgrounds in the Covington area offer everything you need for a smooth stay. Douthat State Park's Whispering Pines and White Oak loops have water and electric hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and a camp store with firewood. Morris Hill at Lake Moomaw has electric sites, potable water spigots, a dump station, and access to the swim beach and boat ramp. Bolar Mountain offers electric sites. For full hookups (sewer at the site), head to private parks near Douthat. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump before leaving the campground; nearby gas station dump options are limited.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/douthatWhat should I expect inside the RV itself?
Comfort, mostly. Covington-area RV rentals on RVezy typically include a real queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a furnace for chilly mountain nights, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or a generator for off-grid stays at Lake Moomaw. Hosts list amenities right on the listing page, so you can filter by exactly what matters: sleeps 6, generator, pet-friendly, and so on. Pro tip: cell service is spotty around Douthat and Lake Moomaw, so download maps and shows in town before heading into the mountains.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covington,VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Covington often offer helpful extras that make a family RV trip Covington much more fun. Common add-ons include kitchen kits, bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and tables, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators for boondocking at Lake Moomaw, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Covington, Clifton Forge, or Hot Springs, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Many hosts also offer delivery to Douthat State Park or your home address. Mileage policies vary by listing (look for unlimited mileage on longer trips). All fees are shown transparently at checkout, so there are no surprises after you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covington,VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy, which keeps things safe and simple. You will pay your booking total (rental, fees, taxes, and your chosen protection plan) with a credit or debit card when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup. The hold is released after your trip once the host confirms everything came back in good shape. To avoid issues, do a pre-trip walkthrough with your host, return the RV with the fuel and propane at the same level you got it, dump the tanks if required, and clean up trash. Most renters get their full deposit back within a few days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny insider tip for making the most of an RV trip in Covington?
Yes, here is the local secret: drive about 10 minutes north of Covington on US 220 to Falling Spring Falls, a roughly 80-foot roadside waterfall noted by Thomas Jefferson in his Notes on the State of Virginia. There is a free overlook with parking large enough for most RVs and trailers. Pair that with a stop at Humpback Bridge just west of town off US 60, one of Virginia's historic covered bridges, where you can picnic by the creek. Finish at the Jackson River Scenic Trail for a flat sunset walk. Few visitors hit all three, and together they capture exactly why RV camping Covington beats almost any other small-town base in Virginia.
