Damascus camping overview
Damascus sits in the far southwest corner of Virginia at the convergence of the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Appalachian Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, and the Trans-America Bicycle Route. The town is officially designated Trail Town USA, and most RV parks in the area cater to hikers, cyclists, and anglers using those routes. Town elevation is roughly 1,900 feet, with the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area to the east and the Cherokee National Forest just across the Tennessee line.
RV options close to town include Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, and Old Mill Music & RV Park, all within a short drive or walk of the Creeper Trail corridor and downtown outfitters. Creeper Trail Campground Inc sits along the trail alignment, and Cold Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground offers a more remote setting in the surrounding highlands.
Most private parks here provide full hookups, while nearby Forest Service and state sites in Mount Rogers NRA and Grayson Highlands State Park lean toward electric-only or primitive sites.
Things to do around Damascus
The Virginia Creeper Trail is the anchor activity, a 34-mile rail-trail running from Whitetop Station down through Damascus to Abingdon. Following flood damage from Hurricane Helene, the upper section from Damascus to Whitetop has been closed for repairs, while the Abingdon-to-Damascus segment has remained open with active shuttle and rental services from town. Riders should check current status before booking a shuttle.
Trout fishing on Whitetop Laurel Creek and Beaverdam Creek draws anglers from spring through fall. Grayson Highlands State Park, about 25 miles east, is known for its wild ponies, high-elevation balds, and access to Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. The Appalachian Trail runs through the middle of Damascus, and Trail Days each May is one of the largest AT hiker gatherings in the country.

Late spring through mid-fall is the primary RV season. May, June, September, and October see the heaviest bookings, driven by Trail Days in mid-May, warm-weather Creeper Trail riding, and fall foliage across the Blue Ridge and Mount Rogers highlands. Sites in and around town commonly fill several weeks out during these windows, and Trail Days weekend books out months in advance.
Summer brings warm valley days and cooler nights at elevation, with afternoon thunderstorms typical in June and July. Fall color usually peaks in mid to late October at higher elevations and a week or two later in town.
Winter is quiet. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close seasonally, and Forest Service campgrounds in Mount Rogers NRA generally operate from mid-April through December. Snow and ice are possible on mountain roads, and Whitetop-area routes can be temporarily impassable during storms.
How to book near Damascus
Private RV parks near Damascus, including Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, Old Mill Music & RV Park, and Creeper Trail Campground Inc, are typically booked directly with the operator by phone or through their own websites. Cold Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground is likewise booked through the operator. Availability for peak weekends, especially Trail Days and fall foliage, should be secured well in advance.
Forest Service campgrounds in Mount Rogers NRA, including Beartree, use Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window. Grindstone has been operating on a limited basis during a multi-year wastewater project, so confirm current status before planning. Grayson Highlands State Park is booked through reservevaparks.com, which opens sites 11 months in advance.
What to expect in Damascus
Damascus itself is a small mountain town with a compact downtown, a handful of outfitters and shuttle services, restaurants, and a grocery. Cell coverage is generally adequate in town and along US-58 but drops off quickly in the surrounding hollows and on higher forest roads.
Access to most private parks is straightforward via US-58 and VA-91, though the drive in from the east across Whitetop Mountain includes steep grades and tight curves that larger rigs should approach with care. An alternate approach from Abingdon on the west side is gentler.
Expect black bears in the Mount Rogers area, so food storage discipline matters. Biting insects peak from late spring through midsummer, and creeks can run high after heavy rain.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Damascus, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Damascus, VA?
Good news: an RV rental in Damascus is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Heart of the Appalachian Trail. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, with campervans landing in between. Trail Days in mid-May and fall leaf season (mid-October) are peak pricing periods, so booking 2 to 3 months ahead locks in better rates. Pro tip: midweek bookings in early June or late September can save you 20 to 30 percent, and many hosts offer weekly discounts for longer Damascus RV trips along the Virginia Creeper Trail.
visitdamascus.org/What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Damascus, VA?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Damascus, VA. Virginia does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for the personal motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before flying in. With paperwork out of the way, you'll be free to focus on the fun part: planning stops along the 17-mile Virginia Creeper Trail.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/Is my Damascus RV rental covered if something happens on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Damascus booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 58 with confidence. During checkout you can choose between protection plan tiers, each covering physical damage to the RV up to set limits, so you can match the coverage to your comfort level. Coverage is provided through RVezy's insurance partners and applies throughout your trip, whether you're parked at Laurel Creek RV Park or navigating the switchbacks toward Whitetop. Pro tip: pick your protection level early in checkout so the per-night price reflects your final total and there are no surprises.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Damascus trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Damascus is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and the exact terms for your trip are shown during checkout and in your booking confirmation. Refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel and the policy tier that applies to the listing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or issue a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: message the host through the listing first to confirm dates and details, then book knowing the cancellation terms are transparent and built into the platform.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Damascus RV rental?
Absolutely, and Damascus is one of the most dog-loving small towns in Virginia. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in Damascus on RVezy and you'll find plenty of hosts who welcome four-legged guests, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome on the Virginia Creeper Trail and the Appalachian Trail, and the Damascus Town Park is a perfect stretch stop. Grayson Highlands State Park, about 25 miles east, allows leashed pets on most trails so your pup can meet the famous wild ponies from a safe distance. Pro tip: message the host to confirm pet details before booking so the welcome mat is rolled out.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/grayson-highlandsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Damascus?
Yes, RV delivery in Damascus is widely available and a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts in the Mount Rogers region will drop the RV directly at Laurel Creek RV Park, Beartree Recreation Area, or Grindstone Campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no learning curve on day one. Filter listings by 'Delivery' on RVezy to see options and fees, which usually scale with distance from the host. Pro tip: delivery pairs perfectly with a Virginia Creeper Trail bike-and-shuttle weekend.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwj/recreation/recarea/?recid=73978How far can I drive on a Damascus RV rental, and are there mileage limits?
You'll have plenty of range to explore from Damascus. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allotment (often 100 to 150 miles per day), and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect for a wider Appalachian road trip. From Damascus, popular drives include Abingdon (about 16 miles), Bristol (about 25 miles), Grayson Highlands State Park (about 25 miles), Boone, NC (about 55 miles), and Asheville, NC (about 150 miles). Each listing clearly shows the included miles and the per-mile rate beyond that. Pro tip: map your route before booking and message the host if you need extra miles; many will happily bundle additional mileage at a discount.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping in Damascus, VA?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Damascus. Damascus offers small private RV parks within walking distance of downtown shops and the Creeper Trail. About 8 miles east on US-58, Beartree Campground in Jefferson National Forest accommodates RVs (seasonal, typically mid-April through October). Grindstone Campground, near Mount Rogers, offers a more rustic experience and is reopening in phases following recent storm damage, so check status before booking. Reserve federal sites at Recreation.gov and state parks at ReserveVAParks.com. Pro tip: book 2 to 3 months ahead for May Trail Days weekend, in-town sites fill fast.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074When is the best time to visit Damascus, VA in an RV?
Damascus shines from late April through October, but the sweet spot is May to early June and again from mid-September through late October when daytime highs typically range from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit and humidity drops. July highs sit in the low to mid 80s with cool mountain nights in the 60s, ideal for sleeping with the windows open. Trail Days in mid-May is iconic but busy. Fall foliage peaks mid-to-late October across the surrounding Blue Ridge. Pro tip: shoulder seasons mean lower RV rental rates, smaller crowds on the Virginia Creeper Trail, and a great chance of catching wild ponies at Grayson Highlands in calm weather.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Damascus?
Yes, and first time renting an RV in a small town like Damascus is honestly one of the easiest places to start. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how the water, propane, generator, slides, and dump valves work, plus tips for the specific roads you'll be driving. The town itself has wide streets and the surrounding US-58 corridor is well-paved. If you're nervous about mountain switchbacks toward Whitetop, choose a smaller Class C or campervan, or have the host deliver to your campground. You're also backed by 24/7 RVezy support and host messaging throughout the trip. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop around Damascus Town Park before heading out.
virginiadot.org/travel/driving-safely-default.aspWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Damascus trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-58 or have a battery issue at Beartree, one call gets help dispatched. Roadside service covers items like towing, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery throughout the Mount Rogers region. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting (often it's something simple like a tripped GFCI). Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have details ready if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Damascus RV rental into Tennessee or North Carolina?
Yes, cross-state RV road trips from Damascus are popular and fully allowed. The Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina tri-state corner is right at your doorstep: Bristol is about 25 miles west, the Tennessee section of US-58 leads to Mountain City, and North Carolina's High Country (Boone, Blowing Rock) is about 90 minutes south. Travel anywhere in the continental United States is covered under your RVezy booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a 4 to 5 day loop from Damascus through Asheville and back via the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic RV road trips you can do from Damascus, especially in October.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my Damascus RV trip?
Budget-friendly news: southwest Virginia generally has lower gas prices than the national average, and Damascus sits right off well-traveled fuel corridors. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 10 mpg, a campervan 14 to 18 mpg, and a truck pulling a travel trailer 10 to 13 mpg. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile Damascus loop, fuel runs roughly $90 to $180 depending on the rig. Fill up in Abingdon or Bristol where prices are lowest, since Damascus itself has limited stations. Pro tip: plan a relaxed itinerary with the Virginia Creeper Trail as your hub. Less driving, more biking, and your fuel budget stays small.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Damascus?
For the best campgrounds near Damascus, book 2 to 6 months out, especially around Trail Days (mid-May) and October foliage weekends. Beartree Campground and Grindstone Campground are reserved through Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance. Grayson Highlands State Park uses ReserveVAParks.com with an 11-month booking window. Private parks in Damascus book directly with the campground and fill up early in peak season. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday night, grab a Sunday-Thursday weeknight at a popular site, then move to an overflow option for the weekend. Cancellations often pop up 7 to 14 days before arrival, so set alerts on Recreation.gov.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Damascus, VA?
Good news: in-town Damascus driving is genuinely easy, with wide streets and very little traffic. Once you head east toward Whitetop on US-58, the road becomes a winding two-lane mountain highway with hairpin turns and 1,600+ feet of elevation gain, beautiful but slow (35 to 45 mph). I-81 (45 minutes north via Abingdon) is the main artery for longer hauls. Watch for fog in the mornings, deer at dusk, and occasional ice from November to March at higher elevations. Pro tip: if you're renting a larger Class A or fifth wheel, stick to US-58 west toward Abingdon and I-81 rather than the curvy section east of town, and ask your host for their favorite route recommendations.
511virginia.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Damascus offer for RVs?
Local campgrounds cover the full range. Private RV parks in Damascus typically offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and on-site dump stations. Beartree Campground in Jefferson National Forest provides drinking water and flush toilets with hot showers but no individual hookups, so you'll dry camp with onboard tanks. Grindstone Campground is also primarily non-hookup. Most state-park sites at Grayson Highlands include electric hookups and a centralized dump station. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving Damascus so you're set for boondocking nights at higher-elevation Forest Service sites.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwjnf/recarea/?recid=73978What's included inside a typical Damascus RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how turnkey RVezy rentals are. Most motorhome rentals in Damascus come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, bunk options for kids, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, heating, air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid nights at Beartree or Grindstone. Wi-Fi and cell coverage vary, so confirm with the host (signal is spotty east of Damascus toward Whitetop). Pro tip: check the listing's full amenity list and message the host about extras like bikes, kayaks, or camp chairs, many include them and they're perfect for the Virginia Creeper Trail.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damascus%2C%20VAWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for on a Damascus RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Damascus typically offer a useful menu of add-ons: bike racks (perfect for the Creeper Trail), camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits, generators, linen and kitchen packs, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Damascus, Abingdon, or Bristol, with delivery available to local campgrounds for a flat fee or per-mile rate. Mileage policies vary, some hosts offer unlimited miles for in-state trips, others include 100 to 150 miles per day with reasonable overage rates. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a bike-rack add-on and have the rig waiting at Laurel Creek RV Park when you arrive, so you can start riding the Virginia Creeper Trail the same afternoon.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/biking/virginia-creeper-trail/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental in Damascus?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, and the booking total (rental fee, protection plan, taxes, and add-ons) is charged according to RVezy's payment schedule shown at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment, the amount is shown on each listing and varies by RV value. It's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, with tanks emptied and fuel topped off as agreed. Pro tip: do a thorough walkthrough video with the host at both pickup and drop-off, including generator hours, mileage, and fuel level. This protects everyone and keeps your deposit return fast and painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I find a cheap RV rental in Damascus that still works for a family?
Yes, family RV trips in Damascus can be very budget-friendly. The cheapest RV rental in Damascus is usually a small travel trailer (sleeps 4 to 6) starting around $90 to $120 per night, which a midsize SUV or pickup can tow, or a compact Class C around $150 to $175 per night. Add a local campground site (often $40 to $55 per night) and you've got lodging plus transport for less than most hotels. Damascus itself is wonderfully kid-friendly: the lower Virginia Creeper Trail from Whitetop back to town is mostly downhill and beginner-friendly. Pro tip: filter RVezy for 'Delivery' and pick a host with included bike racks. One transaction, family adventure handled.
