Campgrounds near East Stone Gap, Virginia
East Stone Gap sits in Wise County in the coalfield country of far southwestern Virginia, tucked into the Appalachian Mountains next to the larger town of Big Stone Gap. RV travelers use the area as a base for exploring Natural Tunnel State Park, the Clinch River corridor, and the Cumberland Gap region, with the Tri-Cities airport in Tennessee within easy driving distance.
Campground options lean toward small family-run parks alongside one state park. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground offers full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service plus primitive tent camping in the warmer months. Natural Tunnel State Park, roughly 30 miles southeast in Scott County, has two campgrounds, cabins, picnic areas, an amphitheater, a visitor center, a camp store and a gift shop.
Additional nearby options include Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc for river-focused stays, Holston Hideaway toward the Holston watershed, and Camp Mountventures for a smaller mountain property. Together, the mix covers full-hookup RV pads, primitive tent sites, and cabin rentals.
Things to do near East Stone Gap
The headline attraction is the tunnel itself. More than 850 feet long and 10 stories high, Natural Tunnel was naturally carved through a limestone ridge over thousands of years, and William Jennings Bryan called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. Visitors can ride a chairlift to the tunnel floor, take cave tours, and canoe on the Clinch River, and the park's Cove Ridge Center offers environmental education programs.
Hiking is the other main draw. Natural Tunnel State Park has seven walking trails, the longest of which is 2.1 miles, leading to features like the tunnel floor, Lover's Leap, Tunnel Hill and Gorge Ridge. From Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, a short walk across the bridge leads into Big Stone Gap, where visitors can explore local shops and restaurants. The Clinch River is a regional favorite for fishing, tubing, and paddling.

The prime window in this corner of Virginia runs from late spring through early fall. The best time to visit Natural Tunnel State Park is from May through October, when the chairlift operates and full access to the tunnel is available, while winter offers a quieter experience with some facilities closed and the chairlift not operational. Primitive camping is available from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December.
Summer is the busiest stretch, and reservations tighten quickly. Prime season runs annually from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, guests who wish to stay less than a week during prime season may call 30 days prior to desired arrival date to see if there is vacancy for a two-night minimum stay, and cabin rentals begin on either Saturday or Sunday.
Shoulder months in April, May, September and October generally bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site availability. Winter camping is possible at some private parks, but expect closures at state facilities and occasional snow at higher elevations.
How to book a campsite near East Stone Gap
Reservation systems vary by property. For information on the availability of overnight accommodations and particular park amenities, or to make a reservation at Natural Tunnel State Park, guests can reserve online or call 1-800-933-PARK. Overnight accommodations, picnic shelters and some meeting facilities are available for reservations up to 11 months in advance through the online and call-in reservation system. Reservations for primitive camping can be made by calling the park office at 276-940-2674.
Private parks such as Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc, Holston Hideaway, and Camp Mountventures are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. The campground is popular and tends to stay booked up, so making reservations well in advance is recommended, and cancellations occasionally free up spots but should not be relied on.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground is a family-run property with clean facilities, level sites, bathhouses, and a covered pavilion, offering pull-throughs, 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, a dump station, and pet-friendly policies.
At Natural Tunnel State Park, electric and water hookup sites accommodate RVs up to 38 feet with 20 and 30 amp outlets, and each site has a gravel pull-through and grassy area with a picnic table and a grill. The park offers 34 RV campsites divided between two campgrounds, Cove View and Lover's Leap, with firewood and ice available at the campground host site.
Cell coverage in the mountains can be uneven, and RV travelers should plan grocery and fuel stops in Big Stone Gap or Gate City before heading to more remote sites.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Stone%20Gap,%20VirginiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Virginia?
You're cleared to drive: Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for any RV you can rent on RVezy, including big Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Your regular state-issued driver's license is all you need. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your identity through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home driver's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. Most first-time renters in East Stone Gap are surprised how quickly they're behind the wheel and rolling toward the Cumberland Gap.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/license-typesIs RV rental insurance included when I rent an RV in East Stone Gap?
Yes, every RVezy booking automatically includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Jefferson National Forest with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), which lets you match protection to your comfort and budget. Roadside assistance is included with the protection plan, so a flat tire or dead battery on a winding Wise County backroad doesn't derail your trip. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers on RVezy before you book so you know exactly what's included before you pick up the keys.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (hosts don't), so the rules are consistent and transparent no matter which East Stone Gap RV you choose. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional refund tiers depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or helps with credits toward a replacement booking. You'll see the full policy details on the RVezy website during checkout. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, knowing you have a grace window if plans shift before your Powell Valley adventure.

They'll level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this service. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI) and don't want to drive a big rig through the mountains.

Late April through October is prime time, with a true sweet spot from late September to mid-October when Appalachian fall color peaks across the Cumberland Mountains. Winter (December to February) sees highs in the 40s and occasional snow, but several hosts still rent year-round if you want a quiet, cozy mountain getaway. weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in East Stone Gap?
You'll do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and waste tanks before you ever pull out of the driveway. First time renting an RV? Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer with delivery so the host parks and sets it up for you. East Stone Gap's local roads are well-maintained, and US-23 (the main route through town) is a wide four-lane highway. You can also message hosts in advance with any questions, and RVezy's support team is available before and during your trip. Pro tip: practice in an empty parking lot like Mountain Empire Community College before tackling mountain switchbacks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem during my East Stone Gap RV trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. That matters in this region because cell coverage can be spotty in the deeper sections of Jefferson National Forest and along the Powell Valley backroads. If something does go sideways, one call connects you with help, and RVezy's customer support team is also available to coordinate with your host. Fuel is one of the easier expenses to plan for here. Gas prices in Wise County typically run a few cents below the Virginia state average, and most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers towed by a pickup return 10 to 14 MPG, and campervans can stretch 15 to 20 MPG. For a typical 4-night Cumberland Gap and Natural Tunnel loop covering around 250 miles, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Big Stone Gap or Norton before heading deep into Jefferson National Forest, where stations are sparse. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest pumps along US-23 and US-58A on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near East Stone Gap?
You have flexibility here, which is part of why this corner of Virginia is so appealing. For Virginia State Parks like Natural Tunnel, book through the official reservation system at reservevaparks.com up to 11 months in advance; summer weekends and October leaf-peeping dates fill fastest. Private parks like Jessie Lea RV Park and Country Inn and RV Park usually have availability with 2 to 4 weeks' notice outside major holidays. Jefferson National Forest dispersed sites are first-come, first-served. Pro tip: pair your RV booking with campground reservations in the same sitting so your dates line up perfectly, and consider a Tuesday-to-Friday trip if you want your pick of the best riverside sites at Jessie Lea.

The Powell Valley Overlook section is scenic but well-engineered. Where you'll want to slow down is on the secondary mountain roads heading into Jefferson National Forest, Flag Rock Recreation Area (a steep climb above Norton), and the back roads to the Carter Fold. Watch for coal-haul trucks during weekday daytime hours and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk.
