Campgrounds near Lynchburg, Virginia
Lynchburg sits in the Virginia Piedmont at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, giving RV renters a base within reach of the James River, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Peaks of Otter. The city itself is roughly forty minutes west of the Parkway near Milepost 63, which puts national park camping and private RV parks within the same day's drive.
Options range from full-hookup commercial parks to primitive National Park Service sites. Paradise Lake Family Campground and Lynchburg RV Resort serve travelers who want power, water, and sewer close to the city. Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort lean toward family stays with pools and organized activities.
For a quieter, forested experience, Otter Creek Campground sits at the Blue Ridge Parkway's lowest elevation, only 649 feet above sea level. It offers creekside tent and RV sites without hookups, operated by the National Park Service.
Things to do near Lynchburg
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the region's main draw. The James River/Otter Creek recreation area has fishing in Otter Lake and a number of hiking trails including Trail of Trees, Otter Creek, Otter Lake Loop, and James River Canal, and the Otter Creek Trail can be hiked to the James River Visitor Center. The nearby Peaks of Otter area offers hikes up Sharp Top and Flat Top.
In town, Lynchburg offers riverfront paths along the James River, historic districts, and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest retreat. Smith Mountain Lake lies about an hour south for boating and swimming.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort or the Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday often mix on-site pool and playground time with day trips to Natural Bridge State Park and Appalachian Trail crossings west of the city.

The private RV parks around Lynchburg, including Paradise Lake Family Campground, Lynchburg RV Resort, the KOA Holiday, and Jellystone Park, generally operate year-round or across a long shoulder season, though pool and activity schedules are concentrated between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
National Park Service campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway follow a shorter window. Otter Creek Campground is typically open from late May until the end of October, though the official opening and closing dates change each year. Peak visitation lines up with summer weekends and, more intensely, with October leaf color when reservations fill quickly.
Winter camping is possible at commercial parks but limited by cold nights and occasional snow. Spring brings variable weather and higher rainfall, while early fall generally offers the most reliable combination of warm days, cool nights, and open Parkway facilities.
How to book a campsite near Lynchburg
Sites at Otter Creek Campground are reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds accept bookings up to six months in advance, and reservations for the Blue Ridge Parkway camping season typically open in early January. A portion of Parkway sites remain first-come, first-served.
Private parks, including Paradise Lake Family Campground, Lynchburg RV Resort, the Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, book directly through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends and October foliage weekends should be reserved several months out, especially for pull-through and full-hookup sites that fit larger rigs.
What to expect
Commercial parks near Lynchburg generally provide full hookups, dump stations, laundry, Wi-Fi, and paved or gravel pads. Family-oriented resorts add pools, playgrounds, and scheduled kids' activities during summer.
Otter Creek Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a different experience. Sites are equipped with grills, picnic tables and lantern posts, and amenities such as flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station are also at hand. Individual hookups are not provided. Cell service is limited along the Parkway, and access requires navigating some rough sections of road.
RV renters should confirm maximum vehicle length when booking Parkway sites, since site sizes vary. Firewood should be purchased near the campground to avoid moving pests between regions, and bear-aware food storage is expected throughout the Blue Ridge corridor.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lynchburg, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lynchburg, VA?
RV rental in Lynchburg, VA is one of the most affordable ways to explore Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills. On RVezy, you'll typically see travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class A coaches from $200 to $350. Weekday stays and shoulder-season trips (March, April, and October) usually deliver the best value. Many Lynchburg owners knock 10 to 20 percent off five-plus night bookings, especially outside Liberty University graduation weekend in May, when demand spikes.
lynchburgva.gov/visitorsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lynchburg, VA?
Good news, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lynchburg. Virginia does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal-use recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes, as long as you're using it for recreation. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and the platform handles ID confirmation digitally before pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway with the license they already carry.
dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying/eligibilityWhat protection is included with my Lynchburg RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can roll out of Lynchburg with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host). Higher tiers come with a lower deductible, which can make a real difference if something unexpected happens on the Blue Ridge Parkway or while backing into a site at James River State Park. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully during booking and pick the level that matches your comfort with risk for a more relaxed Lynchburg RV trip.

Booking an RV rental in Lynchburg is lower risk than you might think. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. RVezy also offers added flexibility around qualifying events, which can matter in Virginia where late-summer tropical remnants occasionally reach the Lynchburg area. Pro tip: book early for fall foliage weekends in October to lock in the widest selection of RVs, and review the cancellation policy details on RVezy before you confirm so you know exactly where you stand if plans shift.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pet-policyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Lynchburg?

Many local hosts will drop the RV at your campsite at Lynchburg/Blue Ridge Parkway KOA, Paradise Lake Family Campground, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery to see hosts offering this service. Delivery fees typically run on a per-mile basis from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you are flying into Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH), since you can skip a rental car and start your campervan rental Lynchburg adventure stress-free.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lynchburg RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most Lynchburg hosts welcome interstate travel, which opens up amazing road trip from Lynchburg options like the full Blue Ridge Parkway south into North Carolina (469 miles to Cherokee, NC), the Outer Banks (about 350 miles east), or up to Washington, DC (about 200 miles north). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection package, so just message the host through the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: tell your host your route upfront, they often have insider stops and overnight tips along the way.
virginia.org/road-trips/How much should I budget for fuel on a Lynchburg RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV trip, but Lynchburg is well positioned for an efficient itinerary. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C motorhome rental Lynchburg, and 16 to 20 mpg for a campervan or tow vehicle pulling a small trailer. Virginia gas prices typically run close to or slightly below the US average, and you'll find plenty of large-vehicle-friendly fuel stops along US-29, US-460, and I-81. Pro tip: fill up in town before heading onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are no gas stations directly on the Parkway itself, only at occasional exits to nearby towns like Bedford or Buena Vista.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lynchburg?
For the best sites, book early. Virginia State Parks like Holliday Lake and James River release reservations 11 months in advance through reservevaparks.com or 800-933-7275, and summer weekends plus October foliage dates fill within days. Private parks like Lynchburg/Blue Ridge Parkway KOA and Paradise Lake Family Campground generally book 2 to 3 months ahead for peak season. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings even on short notice, and you will have a much quieter campground experience.
reservevaparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Lynchburg?
Driving an RV around Lynchburg is very manageable. The city sits at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so you'll encounter rolling hills rather than steep mountain passes within town. Major routes like US-29, US-460, and the nearby I-81 corridor are wide and well-maintained. Watch for two location-specific things: the Blue Ridge Parkway has a 45 mph limit, low overpasses (some as low as 10 feet 6 inches at tunnels), and no commercial trucks (RVs are fine if you stay under the height limits), and downtown Lynchburg has some steep, narrow brick streets near the riverfront that are best avoided in a large rig. Pro tip: stick to US-29 and the Parkway entrances at Route 130 (James River) or US-460 (Peaks of Otter).

For dumping or freshwater fills between stays, you'll find dump stations at most Virginia State Parks and at the Lynchburg-area KOA. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add generators, outdoor TVs, and awnings, while campervans (Class B) offer easier driving with a more compact layout. Wi-Fi and TVs vary by listing. Pro tip: each RVezy listing has an amenities checklist, so filter for must-haves (generator for boondocking on the Parkway, or a bike rack for the Blackwater Creek Trail) before you book.

Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings. virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book, you pay through RVezy (not the host directly) using a credit or debit card, and your total includes the rental, protection plan, and any host add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit is held separately before the trip starts and released after a successful return with no damage. To keep things smooth, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and take date-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, and odometer. Pro tip: return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels and an empty waste tank to avoid extra fees, most Lynchburg hosts list a dump station and gas station nearby in their handover notes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip routes from Lynchburg?
Lynchburg is one of the best launching pads in Virginia for a scenic RV road trip. Top routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Roanoke and Mabry Mill (about 100 miles of overlooks and waterfalls), Shenandoah National Park north via Skyline Drive (about 110 miles to Rockfish Gap entrance), Smith Mountain Lake for swimming and fishing (about 35 miles southwest), Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (just 25 miles east), and the Outer Banks of North Carolina for a beach finale (about 350 miles southeast). Pro tip: combine a few of these into a 5 to 7 day loop. The Parkway plus Smith Mountain Lake plus James River State Park is a classic family RV trip Lynchburg locals swear by.
