Campgrounds near Madison Heights, Virginia
Madison Heights sits in Amherst County, directly across the James River from Lynchburg in central Virginia. The area works well as an RV base because it puts the Blue Ridge Parkway, the James River, and the Piedmont foothills within a short drive, while grocery stores, dump stations, and propane in Lynchburg are only minutes away.
Campground options fall into two groups. Private, full-hookup parks close to town include Paradise Lake Family Campground and Lynchburg RV Resort, both suitable for larger rigs and longer stays. For a more scenic setting, Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday sits between the city and the mountains, and James River State Park features over 15 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails through 1500 acres of rolling meadows and forests, with three miles of river frontage, boat launches, and electric and water camping at Horseshoe.
For mountain camping, Otter Creek Campground sits at Milepost 60.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, giving fast access to the parkway's overlooks, waterfalls, and trails without leaving the national park corridor.
Things to do in Madison Heights
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the headline attraction. From Otter Creek Campground, travelers can walk to the James River Visitor Center along the Otter Creek Trail, which parallels the Parkway road as it meanders from Otter Creek campground to the James River Visitor Center, and drive to nearby overlooks and waterfalls.
On the water, the James River offers flatwater paddling, tubing, and smallmouth bass fishing. James River State Park has boat launches and river frontage, and the park's camp store at the canoe livery is open seasonally for rentals and supplies.
In Lynchburg, families can visit Amazement Square children's museum, Point of Honor, and the Old City Cemetery. Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's retreat, is a short drive south. Peaks of Otter and Sharp Top are close by for day hikes.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Virginia. Days are mild, humidity drops, and both the parkway and the river corridor are at their best. Fall foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway typically peaks from mid-October into early November, which is also the busiest booking window for parkway campgrounds.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. It is the peak family season and the busiest time on the James River. Sites at James River State Park are in high demand, especially during peak seasons, so booking early and staying flexible with dates helps.
Winter camping is limited. The primitive campgrounds at James River State Park are open year-round, but Red Oak Campground and Horseshoe Equestrian Campground with electric and water are open only from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds including Otter Creek follow a similar seasonal schedule and close through the coldest months. Private parks in Lynchburg tend to stay open year-round with reduced amenities.
How to book campgrounds near Madison Heights
Reservations run on different systems depending on the campground. Otter Creek and other Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds are booked through recreation.gov, generally on a six-month rolling window. Weekends in October fill first, so setting reminders for the release date is worthwhile.
Horseshoe at James River State Park is booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and high-demand weekends can be very difficult to secure.
Private parks including Paradise Lake Family Campground, Lynchburg RV Resort, and Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or the KOA app. Holiday weekends and fall-foliage weeks should be locked in several months out.
What to expect at Madison Heights campgrounds
Hookup availability varies widely. Private parks near Lynchburg typically offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. State park sites are more basic: all Horseshoe sites offer water and electric hookups, but visitors have to use the dump station near the entrance of the park. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Otter Creek are non-hookup and rely on a dump station and drinking water available seasonally.
Rig size matters on the mountain. Parkway roads are narrow with tight curves and low tunnels, so travelers in longer or taller Class A rigs should plan routes carefully and consider approaching from Route 501 or Route 60. Pull-through sites at Horseshoe can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet.
Cell coverage is reliable in Madison Heights and Lynchburg but drops on the parkway and inside James River State Park.

A regular state-issued driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Madison Heights. You will also need to meet RVezy's approved driver requirements, which generally means being 25 or older and completing a quick ID verification. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Yes, and this is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Madison Heights includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind while you cruise Route 29 or the Blue Ridge Parkway. During checkout, you can choose your protection level based on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want. It is specifically designed for peer-to-peer RV rentals and is far simpler than piecing together your own policy. Pick the tier that fits your comfort level and hit the road worry-free.

Hosts do not set the cancellation rules, so you get the same fair policy whether you are renting a campervan or a fifth wheel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the rig you want, then review the cancellation timeline in your booking confirmation.

Riveredge Park along the James River right in Madison Heights is perfect for a quick stretch. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, collapsible bowl, and a copy of vaccination records since some campgrounds ask at check-in.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/james-riverCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Madison Heights?
Yes, RV delivery in Madison Heights is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome straight to your campground, vacation rental, or driveway, then level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery spots include Wildwood Campground in Big Island, James River State Park in Gladstone, and Peaks of Otter Campground up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service and their per-mile rates. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move if you've never towed before, you skip the whole driving-a-big-rig learning curve.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmHow far can I travel from Madison Heights, and is unlimited mileage available?

From Madison Heights you are about 10 minutes from Lynchburg, roughly 55 miles (about 1 hour 10 minutes) from Roanoke, 65 miles (about 1 hour 20 minutes) from Charlottesville, 95 miles (about 2 hours) from Shenandoah National Park's Rockfish Gap entrance, and about 230 miles (about 4 hours) from Virginia Beach. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Madison%20Heights%2C%20VirginiaWhat are the best campgrounds near Madison Heights for an RV trip?
You're surrounded by excellent options. Top picks for RV camping Madison Heights travelers love include: James River State Park in Gladstone (about 30 minutes east, with 31 standard electric sites, a dump station, hot showers, and three miles of river frontage); Peaks of Otter Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 86 (about 45 minutes west, 136 sites tucked beside Abbott Lake); Otter Creek Campground at parkway milepost 60.8 (closest BRP campground, about 35 minutes); Wildwood Campground in Big Island (full hookups along the James River); and Holliday Lake State Park near Appomattox. Pro tip: book Virginia State Parks at reserveamerica.com up to 11 months ahead, summer weekends sell out fast.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/james-riverWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Madison Heights?
Madison Heights has a genuinely long RV season thanks to its humid subtropical climate. The sweet spot is mid-April through late October, when daytime highs swing from comfortable 67°F in April to warm mid-80s in July and back to pleasant 70s in October. Fall (mid-October to early November) is the local favorite: Blue Ridge Parkway foliage explodes in red and gold, daytime temps sit in the 60s, and bugs are gone. Spring brings dogwood blooms and waterfall-feeding rains. Winters dip to 30s overnight with occasional snow (about 13 inches per year), but many hardier RVs handle it just fine. Pro tip: book your fall foliage trip by July, leaf-peeping weekends are the busiest of the year.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Madison+Heights&state=VA&site=RNKI've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
Yes, you'll do great, especially around Madison Heights where roads are wide and traffic is light. First time renting an RV is a milestone, and RVezy hosts make it easy: every booking includes an in-person orientation at pickup where your host walks you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and emergency basics. You can also message the host before booking to ask questions about the rig. For your first drive, stick to US-29 and US-460 (both four-lane and RV-friendly), avoid the narrow Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels until you're comfortable with clearance, and practice backing up in an empty lot. Pro tip: pick a travel trailer or Class C for your first trip, they're the easiest to handle.
virginiadot.org/travel/driving-safely.aspWhat happens if I break down during my Madison Heights RV trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every motorhome rental Madison Heights booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-29, a dead battery at Peaks of Otter, or a lockout at James River State Park is just a phone call away. The roadside team can help with towing, tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also one tap away in the app for any questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave Madison Heights, cell service can be spotty in some Blue Ridge Parkway sections.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is a good RV road trip from Madison Heights?
You are in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Madison Heights, with several iconic routes within a half-day's drive. Favorites include: the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Roanoke and Mabry Mill (2 to 3 days, about 160 scenic miles); north to Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park (about 100 miles, perfect long weekend); Smith Mountain Lake for swimming and fishing (about 75 miles, 90 minutes); Virginia Beach and the Atlantic coast (about 230 miles, 4 hours); and Great Smoky Mountains National Park via the full Parkway (about 350 miles, plan a week). Cross-state travel is allowed by most hosts; just confirm in the listing. Pro tip: book Parkway campgrounds through recreation.gov six months out.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Madison Heights RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but Virginia's gas prices are typically below the national average. Plan on 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for a campervan rental Madison Heights, and roughly your tow vehicle's MPG minus 30% if you're pulling a travel trailer. A 300-mile Blue Ridge Parkway loop in a Class C will run about $90 to $120 in gas. Fill up in Madison Heights or Lynchburg before heading west, prices climb the closer you get to the Parkway. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Wawa on Seminole Avenue are your friends.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Madison Heights?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Virginia State Parks like James River and Holliday Lake open reservations 11 months in advance through reservevaparks.com (operated by ReserveAmerica), and they fill up fast for summer weekends, fall foliage, and any holiday. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds (Otter Creek and Peaks of Otter) book through recreation.gov six months ahead and sell out for October leaf-peeping by July. Private parks like Wildwood Campground in Big Island are easier to grab last-minute. For midweek trips or shoulder seasons (April to May, late September), you can often book just a week or two out. Pro tip: set a Campnab alert for sold-out parks, cancellations happen daily.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are local driving conditions like around Madison Heights?
Driving here is genuinely RV-friendly. Madison Heights sits along US-29, a wide four-lane corridor with easy on-ramps and plenty of pull-offs, and you are only minutes from Business 29, US-501, and the four-lane US-460 to Roanoke, all comfortable for big rigs. The main thing to watch is the Blue Ridge Parkway itself: it is stunning but narrow, with 45 mph speed limits, twisty switchbacks, and tunnels with clearances as low as about 10 feet 6 inches (taller Class A rigs should plan around them). Summer afternoon thunderstorms can hit quickly, and winter occasionally brings ice to mountain roads. Pro tip: check Blue Ridge Parkway road and tunnel status on the National Park Service site before you head up.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/safety.htmWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Madison Heights?
You will find a great mix of full-service and rustic. Most private parks within 30 miles of Madison Heights, like Wildwood Campground and the Lynchburg area KOA, offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a camp store. James River State Park has standard sites with water and electric, a dump station, flush toilets, and hot showers but no individual sewer hookups (use the dump station on your way out). Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds (Otter Creek, Peaks of Otter) are more primitive: no hookups, but flush toilets, potable water spigots, and a dump station onsite. Pro tip: top off your fresh-water tank before leaving Madison Heights so you are set for any site.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Madison Heights?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs listed in Madison Heights come fully outfitted: a queen or king bed plus bunks or convertible dinettes (Class Cs typically sleep 5 to 7), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, three-burner propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and a 12-volt house battery. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, generator, awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi is usually via your phone hotspot since cell coverage in the Blue Ridge varies. Seatbelts are provided for the rig's listed sleep count. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons closely, and message your host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet or a kid's booster.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Madison Heights offer plenty of useful add-ons to make your trip smoother. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, generator use, propane refills, portable grills, fire pits, and kayak/SUP rentals. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Madison Heights or nearby Lynchburg, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Many hosts also offer paid delivery to campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway or James River. Mileage policies vary by listing: some allow unlimited miles, others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a $0.35 to $0.50 per-mile rate after. Pro tip: ask for the linen package if you're flying into Lynchburg Regional Airport, way easier than packing sheets.
lynchburgva.gov/lynchburg-regional-airportHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks exchanged with the host. You pay the rental total (plus protection, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card when you book, and the security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the correct fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after drop-off. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at pickup and return, it is the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a Madison Heights RV trip good for families?
It is one of the best family RV trip Madison Heights setups in central Virginia. You are within an hour of kid-favorite stops like Natural Bridge State Park, the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge, Amazement Square children's museum in downtown Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake beaches, and Peaks of Otter where kids can paddle Abbott Lake. James River State Park rents tubes and kayaks in summer and runs ranger programs in season. Look for RVs with bunkhouses or outdoor kitchens (great for s'mores), and use the Sleeps filter to match your crew size. Pro tip: pack headlamps, fireflies along the James River in June are a guaranteed kid memory.
