Camping near Meadowview, Virginia
Meadowview sits in Washington County in southwestern Virginia, along the Interstate 81 corridor between Abingdon and Marion. The area puts RV travelers within easy reach of the Blue Ridge and Mount Rogers highlands, the Virginia Creeper Trail, and a chain of state and national forest campgrounds. Small private parks in and around Meadowview cater to travelers who want a quiet basecamp with hookups rather than a large resort.
Close-in options include Creek Side RV Park and Laurel Creek RV Park for straightforward hookup stays, plus Old Mill Music & RV Park for travelers drawn to the region's Appalachian music scene. A short drive toward the Tennessee border adds Cold Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground and Switchback Creek Campground, both useful for accessing higher-elevation trails.
Hungry Mother State Park near Marion is the nearest major public campground. It offers year-round camping at Camp Burson plus seasonal sites at Creekside and Royal Oak, with about 81 total sites across the park, roughly 50 of them at Camp Burson.
Things to do near Meadowview
The Virginia Creeper Trail is the marquee attraction. Its western half runs about 17 miles from Abingdon through Damascus and remains open with shuttle and rental services operating from Damascus. The upper section from Damascus to Whitetop Station is closed for reconstruction after Hurricane Helene, with reopening projected for late 2026. The Appalachian Trail crosses through Damascus, and Grayson Highlands State Park, roughly an hour south, is known for free-roaming ponies and access to Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia.
Hungry Mother State Park centers on a lake with a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, and more than 17 miles of trails open year-round. Downtown Abingdon adds the Barter Theatre and dining, while Marion offers the Lincoln Theatre and the Museum of the Middle Appalachians in nearby Saltville.

Summer is the busy season. At Hungry Mother, guarded swimming runs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and cabins and the lodge are rented by the week during that window. Book campsites and cabins well ahead: reservations at Virginia State Parks open 11 months in advance, and popular summer and holiday weekends fill quickly.
Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and strong hiking conditions. Grayson Highlands runs full-service camping May through October, with primitive camping allowed in Chestnut Hollow during March, April, and November. No camping is available at Grayson Highlands from the first Monday in December until the first Friday in March.
Winters are cold, with January averaging a daytime high near 39°F and a low near 24°F. Snow can fall from late fall into early spring. Hurricane Helene caused significant damage in the region, and the upper Virginia Creeper Trail from Damascus east to Whitetop Station remains closed while reconstruction continues, so verify trail status before planning a point-to-point ride.
How to book a site
Virginia State Parks, including Hungry Mother and Grayson Highlands, use a single reservation system at ReserveVAParks.com or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK. Campsites, yurts, lodges, and bunkhouses can all be reserved through that system. Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance and must be made at least the day before arrival, and popular summer weekends fill early.
U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area use Recreation.gov, though some loops operate first-come, first-served, especially during ongoing Helene recovery work. Private parks near Meadowview, including Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, and Old Mill Music & RV Park, take reservations directly through their operators. Confirm rig-length limits at smaller mountain campgrounds, since some cap RVs and trailers well under 35 feet.
What to expect on the ground
Meadowview and the surrounding valleys sit at roughly 2,000 feet, with nearby ridges climbing well above 3,000 feet and Grayson Highlands entrance elevation near 3,700 feet. Roads narrow and climb quickly once you leave I-81, and cell service is spotty at higher elevations and inside the national forest, so download maps in advance.
Private parks in the area tend to be small and quiet, with basic hookups rather than resort-style amenities. State park campgrounds like Camp Burson have flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station, and most sites include a table, fire ring, and grill. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests.
Bears live throughout the Mount Rogers area, so store food and trash securely. A Virginia fishing license is required for anyone fishing park waters.

virginia.org/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Meadowview, VA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Meadowview, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement to operate personal motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every rig on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through the platform when you book. Out-of-state visitors are welcome with their home state's valid license, and international travelers should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home license. That's it, no test, no extra paperwork, just pack your bags and head for Whitetop Mountain.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/license-idWhat protection comes with my Meadowview RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Blue Ridge with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the back roads near Mount Rogers or along I-81. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers during booking and pick the one that matches how far you are traveling. First-time renters often choose a higher tier for the extra cushion on twisty Appalachian routes.

Pro tip: book your Meadowview RV trip early to lock in the best rigs for Virginia Creeper Trail season, then review the cancellation details in your trip summary so you know exactly where you stand.

They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. weather.gov/rnk/I've never driven an RV before. Is it really doable in Meadowview?
Yes, and you're in one of the friendliest regions in America for first time renting an RV. Most Meadowview hosts spend 30 to 60 minutes at pickup walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, and the kitchen and bathroom systems, you won't be left guessing. The roads here are forgiving: I-81 runs straight through nearby Abingdon with wide lanes and easy on-ramps, and Route 11 offers a slower scenic alternative. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first campervan rental Meadowview experience, they drive much like a large van or pickup. And you can always message the host with questions before, during, or after your trip.
virginiadot.org/info/resources/Trucking_Restrictions.pdfWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road during my Meadowview RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also just a message away for quick questions about a quirky switch or the propane valve. Pro tip: before pulling out of the driveway, save the roadside assistance number in your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it speeds up any call by minutes.

Popular cross-border routes include Bristol, TN (25 miles), Boone and Blowing Rock, NC (about 90 miles), and the New River Gorge in WV (170 miles). Virginia gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find convenient fuel stops along I-81 in Abingdon (Exit 19) and Marion (Exit 47). Pro tip: many Class C and travel trailer setups run on regular unleaded, but larger Class A diesels need diesel pumps with truck-friendly clearance, the Pilot and Love's truck stops along I-81 are the easiest options.

Private parks in Damascus and Abingdon are usually easier to grab last-minute, especially midweek. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, and check forecasts December through March for snow at elevation.
