Campgrounds near Pennington Gap
Pennington Gap sits in Lee County in the far southwestern corner of Virginia, in the Powell River Valley between Cumberland Mountain and the Stone Mountain ridge. The town itself is small, and most RV camping in the area is spread across a short drive into neighboring Scott County, Virginia and Harlan County, Kentucky. Pennington Gap is a town in Lee County, Virginia, located at roughly 36.76°N, 83.03°W. Elevations across the region generally run between about 1,300 and 2,000 feet, giving campers cooler nights than the Piedmont in summer and colder winters than the Virginia coast.
The area is anchored by two park systems useful to RV renters. Natural Tunnel State Park sits about 30 minutes south and is built around an 850-foot limestone tunnel that William Jennings Bryan called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park lies to the west, and the park covers over 24,000 acres with more than 85 miles of trails and over 14,000 acres of recommended wilderness at the point where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia meet.
Closest options to Pennington Gap itself include Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc, Natural Tunnel State Park, Rock Bottom Horse Camp, and Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park across the state line in Kentucky.
Things to do near Pennington Gap
Natural Tunnel is the marquee attraction. The state park offers swimming, cabins, camping with up to 50-amp service, picnicking, hiking, a chairlift, a visitor center, an amphitheater and interpretive programs, including guided canoe tours and wild cave trips. The chairlift runs from the first weekend in May through the last full weekend of October, which makes late spring through mid fall the strongest window for families with kids.
At Cumberland Gap, the trail network is the draw. Visitors can drive up to the Pinnacle for a view of the mountains, check out Civil War earthworks, hike to White Rocks, Sand Cave, or the historic Hensley Settlement, and stand in three states at the same time. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground and Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc both sit close to river access and small-town walking routes.

Peak camping runs from May through October. The best time to visit Natural Tunnel State Park is from May through October, when the chairlift operates and full access to the tunnel is available. Winter is quieter, and some facilities close while the chairlift does not run. At Cumberland Gap, Wilderness Road Campground stays open, but shoulder months bring cold nights and occasional snow at higher elevations.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV renters who want cooler weather and easier bookings. Spring brings wildflowers and higher water on the Powell and Clinch rivers, while October delivers hardwood color across the ridges. Natural Tunnel State Park's primitive camping is available from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December, and the main state park campgrounds follow a similar warm-season schedule. Cabins and lodges are open year-round and may be reserved up to 11 months in advance.
Winter camping is possible but limited: expect freezing overnight temperatures, possible snow in January and February, and reduced services at state and national park facilities. Private RV parks along the valley floors tend to stay open through the colder months.
How to book campgrounds near Pennington Gap
Reservation systems vary by campground type. For Virginia State Parks, including Natural Tunnel, reservations can be made online through the Virginia State Parks reservation portal or by calling 1-800-933-PARK. Cabins and lodges are open year-round and may be reserved up to 11 months in advance. Prime season runs annually from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and guests who wish to stay less than a week during prime season may call 30 days prior to desired arrival date to see if there is vacancy for a two-night minimum stay.
At Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, all Wilderness Road Campground sites can be reserved through Recreation.gov as early as six months in advance, group camping sites up to 12 months in advance, online or by calling 1-877-444-6777.
Private parks handle reservations directly. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Clinch River Valley Family Campground Llc, Rock Bottom Horse Camp, and Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park all take bookings by phone or through their own websites, and summer weekends tend to fill several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
This is a rural, mountainous region. Roads to campgrounds often follow river valleys or cross ridgelines, and some access routes are narrow. Propane refill options are limited within the immediate Big Stone Gap and Pennington Gap area, so plan fuel and propane stops before arrival.
Hookup levels vary. Natural Tunnel State Park has 34 electric-water hookup sites spread throughout two campgrounds, with no sewer hookups. Sites can accommodate camping up to 50-amp service, and heated showers and water are available at the comfort stations with a dump station near the campground entrance at Wilderness Road. Private parks along the valleys typically offer full hookups.
Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows. Expect black bears in wooded areas and store food accordingly.

You can book your Pennington Gap RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. Because RVezy applies the policy consistently across every listing, you will not see surprise host-specific rules. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rig, and reach out to RVezy support if weather changes your plans, they are available before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Pennington Gap?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Pennington Gap, and your pup will love this corner of southwest Virginia. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see motorhomes and trailers that welcome dogs. Leeman Field RV Park allows leashed pets and has a 1.4-mile greenway perfect for morning walks. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails, including the Wilderness Road Trail. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size rules, and pack a tie-out and water bowl since summer humidity in the mountains can sneak up on furry travelers.
nps.gov/cuga/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Pennington Gap?
Yes, RV delivery in Pennington Gap is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Leeman Field RV Park, Natural Tunnel State Park, or Wilderness Road State Park, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you skip towing a trailer through the curves on US-58 entirely. Delivery fees usually scale by distance, so an in-town drop is cheaper than Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message your host with your campground name and arrival date to confirm setup.

Winters are mild but can ice the Pinnacle Overlook road. Pro tip: time your visit for the August Lee County Fair at Leeman Field, the longest-running fair in Virginia.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Pennington Gap?
You'll do great, and Pennington Gap is genuinely beginner friendly. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering leveling, propane, slide-outs, gray and black tanks, and the dash, so you're never figuring it out alone. For first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer rather than a 40-foot Class A. The main routes (US-58 Alt and US-421) are well-paved two-lane mountain highways with steady grades, not knuckle-whiteners. Practice in a quiet parking lot like Riverbend Shopping Center before heading toward Cumberland Gap. RVezy support and 24/7 roadside assistance are a phone call away if you need a hand.
virginiadot.org/travel/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are covered. Every RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on VA-421 near Great Stone Face Rock or your battery dies at Cave Springs Recreation Area, help is one phone call away. The service handles tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app to troubleshoot anything specific to their rig. Cell service is generally solid in Pennington Gap and along US-58, though it can thin out deep in Jefferson National Forest, so download offline maps before you head into the backcountry.

Class C motorhomes around Pennington Gap average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans hit 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg combined). Pro tip: fill up in Pennington Gap before heading into the mountains, prices climb at tourist stops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Pennington Gap?

Reserve Virginia State Parks like Natural Tunnel and Wilderness Road through ReserveAmerica up to 11 months in advance, especially for October leaf-peeping weekends and Memorial Day. Leeman Field RV Park books through Campspot and usually has openings 2 to 4 weeks out, except during the August Lee County Fair and ATV race weekends when it fills fast. Cumberland Gap National Park's Wilderness Road Campground is first-come, first-served for most sites. Pro tip: midweek arrivals nearly always get a site, even in peak season.

US-58 Alt and US-421 are well-maintained two-lane highways with gentle grades and broad shoulders, no narrow cliff hangers. Watch for occasional coal trucks, deer at dawn and dusk, and fog in low-lying spots along the Powell River. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pennington%20Gap%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, with no cash or side deals with hosts. To avoid surprises on your RV rental in Pennington Gap, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, empty the black and gray tanks at Leeman Field's dump station before returning, and refuel to the level noted in your agreement.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Pennington Gap besides campgrounds?

Johnson's Fishing Pond offers hookup spots at $20/night, a fun budget option. For day parking while you visit downtown's Lee Theatre or the Appalachian African American Cultural Center, the lots along W Morgan Ave easily fit Class C rigs.
