Close to town, Smith River RV Park sits along the bank of the Smith River in the Martinsville and Henry County area and offers full hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electricity, plus a small number of tent spaces. Indian Heritage RV Park, Dan River Campground and River Adventures, Lake Sugar Tree, and Goose Dam Campground round out the closest options for RVs of most sizes.

The prime RV window runs from late spring through early fall. The swimming beach at Fairy Stone opens from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, while Fairy Stone Lake is stocked with trout in October, making late fall and winter productive for anglers. Summer weekends fill quickly at lakefront sites, so booking well ahead is essential.
Shoulder seasons offer cooler nights and lighter crowds. The camping season at Fairy Stone State Park runs from early March through early December, while cabins are available year-round. Corps of Engineers sites at Philpott Lake also shift into a limited winter footprint, with only select loops open outside peak months.
Winter is quiet in the region. Snowfall is occasional rather than heavy, but overnight lows dip below freezing and many private parks reduce services. Travelers considering Smith River RV Park or Goose Dam Campground during the colder months should call ahead to confirm bathhouse and water availability.
How to book campgrounds near Ridgeway
Federal sites at Philpott Lake, including Goose Point, are booked through Recreation.gov. The most popular lakefront sites fill up quickly and should be booked well in advance. Goose Point has three loops: Loop A provides lakefront sites, Loop B caters to tent campers, and Loop C handles larger RVs.
Virginia State Parks, including Fairy Stone, use the state reservation system. Campsite and cabin reservations open 11 months in advance and must be made at least one day before arrival. Sites book up fast on summer and holiday weekends, so booking a minimum of three months ahead is recommended.
Private parks such as Smith River RV Park, Indian Heritage RV Park, and Dan River Campground and River Adventures take direct bookings through their operator websites. Booking ahead is not always required at private parks, but it is recommended in the summer season.
What to expect
Sites in this area vary widely in setup. Private parks along the Smith River tend to offer level gravel pads with full hookups, laundry, and camp stores. Smith River RV Park has river access, a dog park, recreation areas with cornhole boards, fire pits, clean bathrooms, and laundry.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Philpott Lake trend more rustic. Goose Point features good shade from surrounding trees, though privacy between sites is moderate, and the bathrooms, showers, and swimming beach are generally well-maintained. Some access roads are narrow and winding with steep sections, so drivers of larger rigs should check turn-in details before arrival.
Cell coverage can be spotty near the lake and river bottoms, especially at more primitive properties. Bring a paper map, download offline directions, and expect a mix of shaded forest sites and open lakeside pads depending on the campground chosen.
