Campgrounds near Saltville, Virginia
Saltville sits in Smyth County in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, within easy reach of Interstate 81 and the Mount Rogers highlands. RV travelers use the town as a base for Hungry Mother State Park, a state park noted for its woodlands and 108-acre lake, with swimming, camping, cabin rentals, boat rentals, and hiking trails. The park lies just north of Marion, a short drive southeast of Saltville.
Inside Hungry Mother, Creekside is the RV-oriented loop closest to the water. The campground has 19 paved sites with electric and water hookups, each with a fire ring and picnic table, plus a central bathhouse and seasonal laundry. RVs are capped at roughly 35 feet, and the access road includes a sharp turn that larger rigs should approach with care.
Private options round out the area. Creek Side RV Park and Laurel Creek RV Park serve travelers who want hookup sites closer to town, while Old Mill Music & RV Park and Creeper Trail Campground Inc cater to cyclists heading for the Virginia Creeper Trail near Damascus, roughly forty-five minutes south.
Things to do near Saltville
Hungry Mother State Park anchors most itineraries. The park surrounds a 108-acre lake with a sandy swim beach, a boat launch, boat and paddlecraft rentals, and a universally accessible fishing pier. More than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails traverse the surrounding mountains, and guests at Creekside can walk to trailheads and the beach area during the guarded swim season.
Cyclists head south to the Virginia Creeper Trail, a multi-use rail-trail running from Abingdon through Damascus toward Whitetop Station. Following storm damage from Hurricane Helene, the section from Damascus to Whitetop has been closed while repairs continue, though the roughly 17-mile Abingdon-to-Damascus segment remains open, with shuttles and rentals operating from Damascus. Guests at Creeper Trail Campground Inc or Old Mill Music & RV Park sit within easy reach of these outfitters.
Saltville itself offers the Museum of the Middle Appalachians and interpretive walks around the town's historic salt marshes.

The main RV season runs from mid-spring through late fall, roughly mid-April to mid-October, when temperatures are mild and park amenities are fully staffed. Summer brings peak demand at Hungry Mother, particularly around holiday weekends and the guarded swim season, which typically runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Hungry Mother State Park keeps camping available year-round, though many amenities scale back off-season. Camp Burson stays open through winter, while Creekside and the seasonal cabins, yurts, lodge, and swim concessions follow a shorter schedule. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, all cabins and the six-bedroom lodge are rented by the week rather than by the night.
Winter camping is possible but expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced water service at some private parks. Shoulder seasons in April to May and September to October offer the best combination of open amenities, cooler temperatures, and lower crowd levels, plus strong fall foliage in October.
How to book campgrounds near Saltville
State park sites at Hungry Mother go through the Virginia State Parks reservation system operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, either online at reservevaparks.com or by phone at 800-933-PARK. Standard check-in is 4 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fast at Creekside, so booking as soon as the 11-month window opens is the surest path to a specific site. Virginia also allows free reservation transfers up to four days before arrival, which helps if plans shift.
Private parks near Saltville and Damascus, including Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, Old Mill Music & RV Park, and Creeper Trail Campground Inc, book directly through each operator. Call ahead in shoulder seasons to confirm hookup availability and any winter service reductions.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the area are well maintained. I-81 provides the main access, with US-11 and state routes connecting Saltville, Marion, and Damascus. Big-rig drivers should note narrow, curving park roads at Hungry Mother and a sharp turn on the approach to Creekside; the loop caps RVs around 35 feet, and Camp Burson is the better option for larger rigs.
At Hungry Mother, campers find drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station, plus a boat ramp, camp store, playground, and picnic areas. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Cell service is spotty in the deeper valleys, so downloading maps before arrival is wise. Wildlife includes deer and black bear, so food should be stored securely. To limit the spread of forest pests, buy firewood locally rather than transporting it from home.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a consistent cancellation policy across every booking, so hosts do not set their own rules. The refund you are eligible for depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the full terms are available in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. The bottom line: locking in your Saltville RV trip early to secure the rig you want is genuinely low-pressure, and you can review the exact cancellation tiers any time before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Saltville, VA?

Your dog will love it here, Hungry Mother State Park allows leashed pets on most trails, and the Virginia Creeper Trail (about 30 minutes south) is one of the best dog-friendly bike-and-hike paths in the state. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area also welcomes leashed pets across hundreds of miles of trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a long lead, the wild ponies of Grayson Highlands are a sight your pup will never forget (just keep a respectful distance).
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/hungry-motherCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Saltville?
Yes, and this is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Saltville and the surrounding region, meaning they'll drive the rig to your campsite at Hungry Mother State Park, the Mount Rogers area, or even a private property, level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this service. Delivery fees are usually based on distance from the host's home base. It's especially popular for renters who don't want to tow a trailer through winding Appalachian roads, you skip the driving stress entirely and start your vacation the moment you arrive.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/hungry-motherHow far can I travel on an RV rental from Saltville, VA?
You have serious range from Saltville, and many hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for road trippers. Popular RV road trips from Saltville include the Blue Ridge Parkway access near Roanoke (about 130 miles northeast), Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 170 miles southwest), Asheville, NC (about 140 miles south), and New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia (about 150 miles north). Mileage policies vary by listing: some include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee after, while others go unlimited. Filter by mileage policy on RVezy or message the host directly. Pro tip: for a week-long loop, unlimited mileage usually pays off.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Saltville, VA?
You're spoiled for choice with some of Virginia's prettiest campgrounds within an hour of Saltville. Top picks include: Hungry Mother State Park (just 15 miles east in Marion) with lakefront sites, electric hookups, and a beach; Grayson Highlands State Park (about 45 miles south) famous for its wild ponies and high-elevation views; Beartree Campground in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area for forested, full-hookup sites; and Hidden Valley Campground near Abingdon for full-service amenities. For RV camping in Saltville itself, Salt Park has limited primitive sites right in town. Pro tip: Hungry Mother books up 11 months ahead for summer weekends, reserve early through Virginia State Parks' reservation system to lock in your dates.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/hungry-motherWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Saltville, VA?
Saltville sits in the Appalachian Highlands at about 1,700 feet elevation, so the sweet spot is mid-April through late October. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and daytime highs in the 60s and 70s F. Summer (June to August) is warm but comfortable, with highs in the low 80s F and cool 60-degree nights, perfect for campfires. Fall (mid-September to late October) is the showstopper, hardwood forests across Mount Rogers and Hungry Mother explode in red, orange, and gold. Winter trips are possible too with a cold-weather-equipped rig (lows can dip into the 20s F). Insider tip: the second weekend of October is peak leaf color, book your RV camping Saltville stay by August.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in the Saltville area?
You'll do great, and you won't be doing it alone. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, the works, and you'll have their number plus 24/7 roadside assistance throughout your trip. First time renting an RV in Saltville? The area is actually beginner-friendly: I-81 runs just north of town with wide lanes, and Route 107 into Saltville is a straightforward two-lane. Save the curvier mountain backroads (like the climb to Whitetop Mountain) for day two once you're comfortable. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.
virginiadot.org/travel/What happens if I break down during my Saltville RV trip?
You're covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, no add-ons needed. One call gets you help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues anywhere in the Saltville area or beyond. Cell service is solid along I-81 and US-11, though it can dip briefly in the deeper hollers near Mount Rogers, so download offline maps before heading out. Your host is also typically your first text, they know their rig best and can usually troubleshoot small stuff in minutes. The nearest larger service hubs are Abingdon (20 minutes) and Marion (15 minutes), both with auto parts stores and RV-friendly mechanics. Adventure on, knowing backup is one tap away.
virginiadot.org/travel/511_traffic_information.aspCan I take my Saltville RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, cross-state travel is welcome and easy. Saltville's location near the Tennessee, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Kentucky borders makes a multi-state RV road trip from Saltville incredibly popular, think Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway down to Asheville, or up to New River Gorge. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and the insurance terms, so message the host before booking if you're planning a northern run. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals as insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Insider tip: a 4-day Tennessee-North Carolina loop from Saltville hits three national park units and is one of the most scenic drives in the eastern U.S.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost near Saltville?
Budgeting is straightforward in this region. Expect roughly 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C motorhome, and 8 to 12 MPG for a Class A or a truck towing a travel trailer. Virginia gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Saltville-area stations along I-81 (Marion, Chilhowie, Abingdon) consistently have some of the most competitive prices in the state. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Marion or Abingdon before heading into the Mount Rogers backcountry, stations get sparse and pricier once you climb in elevation.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Saltville?
For peak summer and fall foliage weekends, book 4 to 6 months ahead, especially for Hungry Mother State Park, which is the most popular campground within 20 miles of Saltville. Virginia State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance through their official reservation portal, and the lakefront electric sites at Hungry Mother go fast. Federal campgrounds in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area (like Beartree and Grindstone) book through Recreation.gov, typically 6 months out. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, you can often grab sites a few weeks ahead. Insider tip: if Hungry Mother is full, check Grayson Highlands State Park, equally stunning, slightly less booked, and home to the famous wild ponies.
reservevaparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Saltville, VA?
Saltville driving is genuinely manageable, even for RV newcomers. Interstate 81 runs just north of town and is one of the easier interstates in Appalachia, with wide shoulders, gentle grades, and lighter traffic than I-95. Route 91 and Route 107 connecting Saltville to the interstate are quiet two-lane roads with good sight lines. Where you will want to slow down: the climbs into Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and the switchbacks on Route 16 toward Tazewell, both gorgeous but better tackled once you are comfortable with the rig. Winter (December to February) can bring black ice at elevation, so check VDOT 511 before driving. Pro tip: avoid Route 58 west of Damascus in a larger RV, as the curves get tight.
virginiadot.org/travel/511_traffic_information.aspWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Saltville?
You'll find a great mix. Hungry Mother State Park offers electric (20/30/50 amp) and water hookups, modern bathhouses, a dump station, potable water fill-ups, and a swim beach. Beartree Campground in Mount Rogers offers electric sites, hot showers, and a dump station. Grayson Highlands State Park has water/electric sites and a centrally located dump station. Most state park campgrounds in this region are not full-hookup (no individual sewer), but the on-site dump stations make it easy. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground each morning, and use the dump station on departure day to keep things simple. Free dump stations are also available seasonally at several Virginia welcome centers along I-81.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/hungry-motherWhat is included inside a typical RV rental in Saltville?
Most RVs on RVezy come trip-ready. Expect a kitchen (fridge, stove, sink, often a microwave), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelts for every designated passenger seat. Many motorhome rentals in Saltville also include a TV, generator, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in this part of the Appalachians, so most renters rely on a phone hotspot, and Verizon tends to have the strongest coverage in Smyth and Washington counties. Each listing on RVezy shows exactly what is included, so you will know before you book. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps 4 or Sleeps 6 to match your group and skip the guesswork.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saltville,VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Saltville, VA?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a Saltville RV rental include kitchen kits, bedding and linen packages, generators, bike racks, camp chairs, outdoor grills, and portable propane fire pits (perfect since many Virginia campgrounds have fire restrictions in dry months). Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point, and many also offer RV delivery in Saltville for a flat fee or per-mile rate. Mileage policies are clearly shown on each listing, with options ranging from 100 daily miles to fully unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding kit, you'll arrive to a turn-key rig already plugged in, ready to roast marshmallows.
dof.virginia.gov/fire/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay directly through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash or off-platform transfers (that is how we keep you protected). Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit, which is authorized separately from your booking payment and released after the RV is returned in good condition. The deposit amount is listed clearly on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip to avoid issues: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with fuel and propane at the agreed levels, and dump the tanks if your host requests. Easy in, easy out, easy refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I visit Saltville in winter with an RV?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in the Appalachians is magical if you're prepared. Saltville sits at 1,700 feet with January lows often in the low 20s F, so look for RVs equipped with a furnace, heated holding tanks, and shore-power capability, just filter by season and message hosts to confirm winter readiness. Hungry Mother State Park keeps a limited number of electric sites open year-round, and the off-season means fewer crowds, lower rates, and a real shot at seeing snow-dusted ridges along Mount Rogers (the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 feet). Pro tip: keep a heated water hose on the rig, disconnect and drain when temps drop below 20 F overnight, and pack extra propane.
