Camping near West Point, Virginia
West Point sits at the confluence of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers, where the two waterways form the York River in Virginia's Middle Peninsula. The town works well as an RV base for travellers who want tidewater rivers, small-town amenities, and quick access to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown without staying inside the busier Historic Triangle.
Most RV-friendly campgrounds cluster to the south and southeast, in the Williamsburg corridor along I-64 and US-60. Rainbow Acres Campground is the closest private option, offering wooded sites within a short drive of downtown West Point. Colonial Pines Campground at Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center, Williamsburg RV and Camping Resort, American Heritage RV Park, and Rockahock Campgrounds and Resort RV Park sit roughly 30 to 45 minutes south and pair full-hookup sites with theme-park and historic-site access.
York River State Park, located 11 miles west of Williamsburg and open year round, gives RV travellers a public-land alternative within easy reach of West Point.
Things to do around West Point
The rivers drive most of the outdoor activity. Kayaking, tidal fishing, and crabbing are common on the Mattaponi and Pamunkey, and the town hosts the long-running West Point Crab Carnival in early October with fireworks over the river.
York River State Park covers roughly 2,531 acres of upland forests, marshy creeks, brackish inlets, and open fields, with birders recording as many as 70 species in a single morning along trails such as Taskinas Creek. Hiking, mountain biking, and paddle rentals are available inside the park.
Families staying at the Williamsburg-area campgrounds are typically within 20 to 30 minutes of Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Jamestown Settlement, and the Yorktown battlefield.

50° / 30°F 83 mmQuiet season; some private parks reduce services
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. April through May brings comfortable daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit, blooming dogwoods, and manageable humidity. Late September through early November delivers cooler nights, lower crowd levels at Historic Triangle attractions, and fall colour along the river bluffs.
Summer is peak season for the private resorts near Williamsburg because families combine camping with Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. Expect hot, humid conditions, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and sites that fill weeks in advance for holiday weekends. Reserve early for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Winter is the quietest season. Some private campgrounds run reduced services or close sections between December and February, while York River State Park remains open year round. Coastal Virginia can also see tropical storm impacts from August into October, so RV travellers along the tidal rivers should track the National Hurricane Center forecast during that stretch.
How to book a campsite near West Point
Private parks in the West Point and Williamsburg corridor, including Rainbow Acres Campground, Colonial Pines Campground at Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center, Williamsburg RV and Camping Resort, American Heritage RV Park, and Rockahock Campgrounds and Resort RV Park, take reservations directly through each property's website or phone line. Book two to three months out for prime spring and fall weekends, and earlier for summer holidays.
Reservations at Virginia State Parks, including nearby York River State Park, can be made online through the reservevaparks.com portal or by calling the Customer Service Center at 800-933-PARK (7275), and may be made up to 11 months in advance. Same-day campsite reservations are accepted until 2 p.m.
What to expect on the ground
West Point itself is a small mill town with grocery stores, a hardware store, fuel, and a handful of seafood-focused restaurants. Route 33 and Route 30 are the main approaches, both flat and open, which makes them straightforward for first-time RV drivers arriving from Richmond or the Historic Triangle.
Most private campgrounds near Williamsburg offer full hookups, level sites, laundry, pools, and playgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US-60 and I-64 corridor and thinner along the rural stretches of King William and King and Queen counties.
Biting insects, ticks, and high humidity are consistent from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and plan for shaded sites where possible. Black bears are uncommon this far east, but raccoons and deer are routine visitors, so store food and trash in sealed containers.

Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy directly (never to the host in cash) using a credit or debit card during checkout. Your rental cost, protection plan, and any host add-ons are clearly itemized so there are no surprises. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy (not the host) before your trip starts, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing: this protects against incidentals like damage or excess mileage. After return, assuming the RV comes back in the condition it left, your deposit is released, typically within a few days. To avoid issues: take photos at pickup and return, dump tanks, refuel, and follow the host's checklist.
