Campgrounds near Amboy, Washington
Amboy sits in rural Clark County, Washington, north of Battle Ground and roughly an hour from Portland. The town serves as a practical staging point for the Lewis River corridor, the south side of Mount St. Helens, and the Yacolt Burn State Forest, giving RV travelers access to lakes, working forestlands, and volcanic terrain within a short drive.
Camping options range from developed state parks to first-come DNR forest sites and a private resort. Battle Ground Lake State Park offers standard, partial-hookup, and primitive sites in evergreen forest surrounding a spring-fed crater lake. Paradise Point State Park lies just off Interstate 5 along the East Fork Lewis River, with primitive, standard, and partial-hookup sites and two yurts. Cresap Bay Park Pacificorp is a lakeside campground on the east end of Lake Merwin operated on PacifiCorp land.
Further into the forest, Rock Creek Horse Camp - Department of Natural Resources is a primitive equestrian-oriented camp in the Yacolt Burn State Forest. Lone Fir Resort in Cougar provides cabins, tent sites, and full-hookup RV spots and is the closest resort to Mount St. Helens.
Things to do near Amboy
Water recreation is the main draw. Battle Ground Lake is stocked with trout, has a non-motorized boat area, and offers a shallow swim beach suitable for families. Lake Merwin, accessed from Cresap Bay Park Pacificorp, supports powerboating, paddling, swimming, and has a two-lane boat ramp with a marina reserved for overnight guests.
On land, the Yacolt Burn State Forest carries a network of trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, with Rock Creek Horse Camp - Department of Natural Resources providing direct trail access. Paradise Point State Park has a sandy riverfront swimming stretch on the East Fork Lewis River, a disc golf course, and short walking trails.
From Cougar and Lone Fir Resort, families reach the Ape Cave lava tubes, Lahar Viewpoint, and climber trailheads on the south side of Mount St. Helens.

The Amboy area follows a Pacific Northwest pattern: wet, cool winters and warm, dry summers. Most annual precipitation falls between November and March, while July and August are the driest months and the reliable window for lake swimming and dry trails.
Seasonal openings vary by campground. Paradise Point State Park campsites operate mid-May through mid-September, with the two yurts open year-round. Cresap Bay Park Pacificorp opens the Friday before Memorial Day and closes September 30. Battle Ground Lake State Park is open year-round for camping and day use. Lone Fir Resort operates year-round, and Rock Creek Horse Camp - Department of Natural Resources is available year-round, though DNR forest trails can be muddy and slick during the rainy season.
Shoulder seasons bring fewer crowds and cooler nights, but campers should plan for rain gear from October through May and check road conditions on gravel forest routes before heading up toward Mount St. Helens or into the Yacolt Burn.

Had a very good time on this RV! Recommend to anyone!
Kirill V. - Jan 2026
I am so happy that we chose to rent from Andrey. We went on a 13 day trip with our 3 small kids, when we picked the RV up it was IMMACULATE. So clean, smelled amazing, and fully stocked with everything we could have needed. Even down to camp chairs for our kids. We had zero issues with it on our long trip, communication with the host was amazing, and I could not recommend him enough. Best experience ever!

How to book near Amboy
Reservation systems differ by operator. Washington State Parks, which manages Battle Ground Lake State Park and Paradise Point State Park, uses the washington.goingtocamp.com system, with sites bookable up to nine months in advance. A Discover Pass is required for day-use parking at Washington State Parks and DNR sites.
Cresap Bay Park Pacificorp reservations are handled through PacifiCorp's Lewis River recreation program, managed by American Land and Leisure. Summer sites, especially waterfront ones, sell out early, so booking well ahead is recommended. Lone Fir Resort takes direct reservations through its own website or by phone.
Rock Creek Horse Camp - Department of Natural Resources does not accept reservations. Sites are first-come, first-served, and a Discover Pass must be displayed on the vehicle.
What to expect
Sites near Amboy skew toward forested state-park camping and lakefront reservoir camping rather than full resort RV parks. RV hookups are limited. Battle Ground Lake State Park has a small number of partial-hookup sites in addition to standard and primitive sites. Paradise Point State Park allows RVs up to 40 feet, with 18 partial-hookup sites and limited availability for larger units. Cresap Bay Park Pacificorp has restrooms, showers, and an RV dump station, but no hookups at individual campsites.
For full hookups, Lone Fir Resort in Cougar is the practical choice, offering laundry, showers, and other resort amenities on-site.
Cell service is inconsistent in the forest and reservoir zones. Bring drinking water for primitive stops, carry a card for pay stations, and expect quiet hours to be enforced at state and PacifiCorp campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Amboy, WA
How much does an RV rental in Amboy, WA cost per night?
RV rental in Amboy is often more affordable than big-city alternatives in the Pacific Northwest. On RVezy you can typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $140 per night, campervans from $150 to $200, and Class C motorhomes between $175 and $250 nightly. Larger Class A motorhomes generally run $250 and up. Hosts set their own nightly rates, and many offer weekly or multi-night discounts that bring the per-night cost down. Pro tip: book mid-week trips in June or September to score a cheap RV rental in Amboy without sacrificing great Mount St. Helens weather. Browsing several listings and messaging hosts directly is the fastest way to lock in the best value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amboy%2C%20WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Amboy, WA?
Great news, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Amboy. Washington State only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, and virtually every RV on RVezy, including Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A coaches, falls comfortably under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload your license through RVezy's quick ID verification at checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's the whole list. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to roll out toward Mount St. Helens.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Amboy?
Every Amboy RV trip booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the volcano views instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your rental, which is reassuring on remote Forest Roads near Mount St. Helens where cell service can get thin. At checkout you choose between coverage tiers based on how much extra cushion you want, and the guest, not the host, selects the level. Paired with around-the-clock roadside help for issues like flat tires, lockouts, or breakdowns, it is exactly what you want for a Gifford Pinchot National Forest adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Amboy RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy has a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation terms, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. The exact refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans stay on track. You can review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm, which keeps booking your Amboy RV trip low-risk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Amboy RV trip?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Amboy is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings from hosts who welcome dogs. Amboy is great for dog owners: pets are allowed on leash at most Gifford Pinchot National Forest campgrounds, picnic areas, and roads around Mount St. Helens, and leashed pets are welcome in the campground and on most trails at nearby Battle Ground Lake State Park. Pro tip: pack a long lead and a towel, because the Lewis River swimming holes and Moulton Falls Regional Park are both excellent stops where your dog can cool off mid-hike.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/battle-ground-lake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Amboy?
Yes, RV delivery in Amboy is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters. Many local hosts will deliver to Battle Ground Lake State Park, Paradise Point State Park, Sunset Falls Campground, or your private property in Amboy, then level the rig, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and any per-mile fee. For first-timers heading to Mount St. Helens, delivery means you skip the learning curve of driving a motorhome on twisty Forest Road 25 and jump straight into vacation mode.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amboy%2C%20WashingtonHow many miles can I drive on my Amboy RV rental?
You have plenty of road to roam. Most Amboy hosts include around 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a Mount St. Helens loop or a longer Pacific Northwest road trip. Additional miles typically run about $0.30 to $0.50 each, and you can ask the host to bundle extra mileage into your booking up front for a better rate. Real distances from Amboy: the Johnston Ridge area of Mount St. Helens is about 70 miles by road, Portland is about 35 miles south, Mount Rainier is roughly 100 miles, and Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast is around 120 miles. Knowing your route helps you pick the right mileage package the first time.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amboy%2C%20WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Amboy to park my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Amboy. The best campgrounds near Amboy include Battle Ground Lake State Park (about 15 miles south, with standard and utility sites on a spring-fed volcanic crater lake), Paradise Point State Park (about 15 miles west on the Lewis River, with utility sites), Sunset Falls Campground in Gifford Pinchot National Forest (a forested first-come, first-served spot on the East Fork Lewis), Cougar Campground near Yale Lake, and Lone Fir Resort in Cougar near the south side of Mount St. Helens. Reserve Washington State Parks up to nine months in advance through their reservation system, especially for summer weekends. Insider tip: midweek nights at Battle Ground Lake often have openings, even in July.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/battle-ground-lake-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an Amboy RV trip?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for an Amboy RV trip, when daytime highs typically sit in the 70s to mid-80s and Forest Road 99 to Windy Ridge is finally snow-free. July and August are peak Mount St. Helens season with the longest daylight, while September delivers similar big views with thinner crowds and turning vine maples. Spring (April to early June) is lush and green but rainy, as these Cascade foothills see well over 60 inches of precipitation annually. October brings vivid fall color and crisp 50 to 60 degree days. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip in early June or late September and you will often save versus peak weeks.
weather.gov/pqr/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Amboy?
You have got this, and Amboy is a great place for first time renting an RV. Roads around town are quiet two-lanes, traffic is light outside of Battle Ground, and your host will walk you through the entire rig at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, tanks, and the dash. Start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer if you are nervous; they drive much like a large pickup. If big-rig anxiety is the only thing holding you back, book a host who delivers and sets up on-site. You can also message hosts before booking and RVezy support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Confidence comes fast on these mellow Clark County roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong on the road near Mount St. Helens?
You are never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Forest Road 25, a battery issue at Climber's Bivouac, or a tow off State Route 503 is a single phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about the rig, like how the generator restarts or where the freshwater valve is located. For real emergencies, dial 911 first; Clark County and Cowlitz County have responsive sheriff and fire coverage even in remote Gifford Pinchot areas. Insider tip: cell service drops past Cougar, so screenshot directions and download an offline map before heading toward Windy Ridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Amboy?
Amboy sits in a sweet spot for a Pacific Northwest RV road trip. Top routes include the Mount St. Helens south-side loop via State Route 503 to Cougar and up toward Windy Ridge, the Columbia River Gorge to Multnomah Falls and Hood River (about 60 to 75 miles south), Mount Rainier National Park via Packwood (about 100 miles), the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach or Astoria (about 120 to 140 miles), and a longer swing to Crater Lake National Park (about 350 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper paperwork, but trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Mapping stops in advance helps you squeeze more wow per gallon.
fs.usda.gov/giffordpinchotWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect and how do I budget fuel?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV budget, but it is easy to plan. Class B campervans average around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck plus travel trailer setup is usually 10 to 14 mpg. Washington gas prices around Amboy and Battle Ground often sit a bit above the national average; fill up at warehouse clubs or major stations in Vancouver before heading north for the best price. For a typical Mount St. Helens weekend covering 200 miles in a Class C, plan roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: most hosts ask you to return the RV with the same fuel level you got it, so snap a photo of the gauge at pickup.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Amboy?
Aim for about nine months out if you want a prime summer weekend, especially at Washington State Parks like Battle Ground Lake or Paradise Point, which open reservations on a rolling nine-month window through the Washington State Parks reservation system. Many Gifford Pinchot National Forest campgrounds are bookable through Recreation.gov up to six months ahead. Cabins and the few hookup sites disappear first. If you are flexible, midweek nights and shoulder-season Fridays often have last-minute openings. Insider tip: set a cancellation alert to grab cancellations, especially for utility sites at Battle Ground Lake, which book solid by April for July weekends but turn over constantly.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/battle-ground-lake-state-parkWhat are the local driving conditions like around Amboy?
Driving around Amboy is genuinely pleasant. State Route 503 and the Lewis River Road are well-maintained two-lane highways with gentle curves and great forest scenery. Heading into the Mount St. Helens backcountry, Forest Roads 25, 90, and 99 are paved but narrow with tight switchbacks, so take it slow in anything over 25 feet. Watch for logging trucks on weekdays, deer at dawn and dusk, and patchy cell service past Cougar. Winter brings snow and potential chain requirements at higher elevations, and Forest Road 99 to Windy Ridge closes seasonally. Pro tip: top off your fuel in Battle Ground or Woodland before heading east; there are few gas stations between Cougar and Randle.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpassesWhere can I dump tanks and refill water near Amboy?
You will find dump stations and potable water close by. Battle Ground Lake State Park has a public RV dump station and potable water fill for registered campers. Paradise Point State Park offers similar services. The I-5 Gee Creek Safety Rest Areas in both directions, about 20 minutes west, have free dump stations and potable water open seasonally, which is a lifesaver on travel days. Cougar RV Park and Lone Fir Resort in Cougar will often let non-guests dump for a small fee, perfect after a Mount St. Helens south-side trip. Many local campgrounds offer water and electric, while full hookups including sewer are most common at private parks like Toutle River RV Resort.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/battle-ground-lake-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with a typical Amboy RV rental?
Today's RVs feel a lot like a small apartment on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Amboy come with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating that converts to extra sleeping space, climate control, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and a backup camera. Generators are standard on most Class A and Class C rigs for off-grid power, and a growing number of hosts offer solar packages or mobile WiFi as an add-on. Travel trailers offer similar layouts minus the cockpit. Check the listing's amenities checklist to confirm what is included before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amboy%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup details should I know about for my Amboy rental?
Hosts in Amboy offer useful add-ons that make a family RV trip in Amboy easier: linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generator hours, propane refills, and even pre-stocked s'mores kits. Delivery, setup, and pickup is one of the most popular add-ons. Standard pickup is usually early to mid-afternoon and return mid-morning, mirroring most campground check-in times. Confirm the meet-up address with your host the day before, allow 45 to 60 minutes for the walkthrough, and ask any final questions about the generator or slide-outs while you are there. Pro tip: ask about a one-way drop-off if you are flying out of Portland International Airport, about 40 miles south.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amboy%2C%20WashingtonHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform at booking using a credit or debit card, and RVezy holds the funds until your trip starts, which protects both you and the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Deposit amounts vary by rig. To avoid any deposit issues: do a video walkaround with your host at pickup, keep tanks dumped and the interior tidy, return on time and at the same fuel level, and stay within your mileage allowance or pay overage upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Amboy during the winter months?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Amboy are a hidden gem. Many local hosts keep their rigs available year-round, and Amboy's lower elevation means town rarely sees prolonged snow, even in January when highs often sit in the low to mid 40s. For winter trips, filter for RVs with heated holding tanks, a furnace, and shore power compatibility, and ask the host about winterization status. The Marble Mountain and Cougar Sno-Parks (Washington State Sno-Park permit required) open up snowshoeing and snowmobiling just up the road, while Battle Ground Lake stays open year-round for serene off-season camping. Pro tip: carry tire chains for higher-elevation forest roads and confirm the campground has plowed access before you roll out.
