Camping near Black Diamond, Washington
Black Diamond sits in southeast King County, Washington, in the Cascade foothills about 30 miles southeast of Seattle. The town is a practical RV base for the Green River Gorge corridor, the surrounding state parks, and the White River (Sunrise) entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, roughly an hour and a half south by State Route 410.
The area is the heart of an old coal-mining district. Flaming Geyser State Park and Kanaskat-Palmer State Park sit at opposite ends of the Green River Gorge State Park Conservation Area, a corridor that protects shoreline between the two parks. Both parks are popular day-use destinations, and Kanaskat-Palmer is the primary public campground in the immediate area.
Nearby private and municipal options expand the choices for RV travelers. Lake Sawyer RV Resort and Cran Mar RV Park sit closest to town, while Enumclaw Expo Center RV Campground and South Prairie Creek RV Park serve travelers heading toward Mount Rainier and the Carbon River valley.
Things to do near Black Diamond
Flaming Geyser State Park anchors much of the local day-use recreation, with Green River shoreline, hiking trails, and a short walk to the historic methane seep and the still-active Bubbling Geyser. The river is popular for tubing, kayaking, and fishing, and salmon return upstream in the fall.
Kanaskat-Palmer State Park, on a forested plateau upriver, offers about three miles of trails and access to the Green River Gorge. Whitewater rafting and kayaking through the gorge is rated for experts only, with Class II to IV rapids depending on flow.
For families, Lake Sawyer offers swimming and paddling, and the Enumclaw area hosts the King County Fair at the Expo Center in summer. State Route 410 east of Enumclaw is the gateway to Mount Rainier's Sunrise area when the road is open.

Summer is the prime camping window. July and August are the driest months of the year in this part of the western Cascade foothills, with long daylight, comfortable temperatures, and the warmest river conditions. Kanaskat-Palmer takes reservations, and weekend sites at the state park book out well in advance for the peak season.
Spring brings wildflowers and active river life along the Green River, but trails can be muddy and the river runs cold and high from snowmelt. Fall is quieter, with foliage color and salmon runs visible from the Flaming Geyser river trails. Rain increases sharply from October onward, and November is typically the wettest month of the year.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Kanaskat-Palmer is generally open year-round weather permitting, though off-season camping is first-come, first-served and services may be reduced. The Sunrise and Chinook Pass roads at Mount Rainier are closed in winter and typically reopen in late June or early July.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!
Phil G. - Aug 2025
Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

Reserving a campsite near Black Diamond
Washington State Parks campgrounds, including Kanaskat-Palmer, are reserved through the state's central system at washington.goingtocamp.com or by phone at (888) 226-7688. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the arrival date, with the reservable peak season running from May 15 through September 15. During the off season, camping is first-come, first-served. A Discover Pass is required for day-use vehicle access at state parks.
Private parks operate independently. Lake Sawyer RV Resort, Cran Mar RV Park, and South Prairie Creek RV Park accept direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. The Enumclaw Expo Center RV Campground is managed by the expo facility and may restrict bookings around large events such as the King County Fair.
What to expect on site
Kanaskat-Palmer has roughly 50 sites, including 19 partial-hookup (electric) sites suitable for RVs up to 50 feet, standard tent sites, and yurts. The park has flush restrooms, showers, a dump station near the entrance, and a group camp that holds up to 80. Cell reception in the gorge area is limited, and campers may hear an occasional fire siren from the local volunteer station or train noise from the nearby BNSF tracks.
Private RV parks in the area generally offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and easier access for larger rigs. Sites tend to be closer together than at the state park.
Green River water is cold year-round, and the gorge section is dangerous for casual paddlers. Pack layers even in summer: foothill mornings are cool and forest sites stay shaded.

Mount Rainier National Park's Sunrise entrance is about 55 miles south (around 90 minutes), Snoqualmie Falls is just 25 miles north, Crystal Mountain Resort is roughly 60 miles southeast, Seattle is 30 miles northwest, and Mount St. Helens is about 130 miles south. nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Black Diamond for RV camping?
The best campgrounds near Black Diamond mix forested Cascade scenery with full hookups for easy RV camping. Kanaskat-Palmer State Park, just a short drive east on the Green River, has utility sites with water and electric. Lake Sawyer Resort near town offers full hookups and lake access. Nolte State Park near Cumberland is a day-use stop with a swimmable lake, great for a picnic break. A bit farther out, Cougar Rock Campground inside Mount Rainier National Park is unbeatable for views, though it does not have hookups. Book early, especially for July and August weekends.
parks.state.wa.us/532/Kanaskat-PalmerWhen is the best time of year for a Black Diamond RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV rental in Washington's Cascade foothills is late June through mid-September, when Black Diamond enjoys highs around 75 to 80°F, low humidity, and the driest stretch of the year. July and August are peak season with the warmest, sunniest days, ideal for Mount Rainier wildflower season at Paradise. Late May, June, and September are smart shoulder-season picks with milder crowds and lower rates. Winters here are cool and wet, with average highs near 45°F and occasional light snow, but November through March can still be magical for storm-watching and Crystal Mountain ski trips. Book your summer dates by April for the best selection.
weather.gov/sew/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially from a low-key town like Black Diamond. Your RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, water and propane systems, leveling, and dump procedures, and they are a text away during your trip. Roads around Black Diamond, like SR-169 toward Maple Valley and SR-516 toward Kent, are wide and gently rolling, great practice routes before tackling anything bigger. If you would rather skip driving entirely, choose a host with delivery and you will arrive to a fully set-up RV. Most renters say they would do it again immediately.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time-travelWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Help is always close by, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of your protection plan. If you get a flat on SR-410 heading to Mount Rainier, lock the keys inside at Lake Sawyer, or run into a mechanical hiccup near Kanaskat-Palmer, one phone call dispatches help. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline for quick fixes like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater pilot. For non-emergencies, the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway and roll out worry-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Black Diamond RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and multi-state trips are totally doable from Black Diamond, just confirm with your host first. Many RVezy hosts allow travel into British Columbia (the Vancouver/Whistler corridor is only about 175 miles north) and across the Pacific Northwest into Oregon and Idaho, but you'll need to message the host before booking so the protection package can be confirmed for cross-border use. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular RV road trip from Black Diamond routes include the Olympic Peninsula loop, the Oregon Coast down to Cannon Beach, and the North Cascades Highway. Bring your passport for any Canada plans and budget extra time at the Peace Arch crossing.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Black Diamond RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable with smart planning. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, while travel trailers pulled by your own truck depend on your tow vehicle. Washington gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, often $4.20 to $4.80 per gallon in the Black Diamond and Maple Valley area. For a 3-night Mount Rainier loop covering roughly 200 miles, plan on $80 to $130 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco in Covington or Fred Meyer in Maple Valley before heading into the mountains, prices climb fast past Enumclaw.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Black Diamond?
For Washington State Parks like Kanaskat-Palmer and Nolte, reservations open up to 9 months in advance through the Washington State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends from late June through Labor Day fill quickly. For Mount Rainier National Park campgrounds like Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh, book on Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead. Private parks like Lake Sawyer Resort usually have more flexibility but still sell out for July 4th and Labor Day. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the booking window, log in a few minutes early, and have your dates and rig length ready. Midweek stays are far easier to grab last-minute.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are the driving conditions like around Black Diamond?
Driving in and around Black Diamond is genuinely pleasant for RVers, with two-lane highways, gentle Cascade foothill grades, and light traffic outside of Seattle commute hours. SR-169 (the main route into town) and SR-516 toward Kent are wide and well-maintained. Climbs get steeper as you approach Crystal Mountain on SR-410, and Chinook Pass is seasonally closed in winter, so downshift on descents to spare your brakes. Watch for elk near Flaming Geyser State Park at dawn and dusk, and check WSDOT for mountain pass conditions before heading east. Avoid I-5 through Seattle between 3 and 7 p.m. weekdays. Otherwise, the roads here are a confidence-builder for any new RVer.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time-travel/mountain-passesWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Black Diamond?
Campgrounds near Black Diamond run the full range from full-hookup resorts to forested state park sites. Lake Sawyer Resort offers 30/50-amp power, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, and showers. Kanaskat-Palmer State Park has utility sites with water and electric plus a dump station and potable water fill near the entrance. Nolte State Park is day-use only, but you will find dump stations at the Enumclaw Expo Center and most Flying J or Pilot stations along I-5. Cell service is solid in town but spotty deeper in the Cascade foothills, so download maps offline. Pack a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter to cover any site.
parks.state.wa.us/532/Kanaskat-PalmerWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Black Diamond?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped today's rentals are. Most RVezy listings in the Black Diamond and greater Puget Sound area include a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and often an oven; a bathroom with toilet and shower; sleeping for 4 to 8 people depending on rig size; heating and air conditioning; a TV and often a DVD player; and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Many campervan rental Black Diamond options add roof racks for bikes or kayaks. Seatbelts are provided for all approved passengers, which matters for family RV trip Black Diamond planning. Check each listing's amenities tab to match the rig to your trip.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
Hosts on RVezy offer plenty of useful add-ons to make your trip easier: bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak mounts, generators, kitchen kits, and even pet packages with bowls and beds. Pickup is typically scheduled at the host's home in Black Diamond, Maple Valley, Covington, or Enumclaw, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough covering all systems. Many hosts offer RV delivery Black Diamond for a flat fee to local campgrounds, the easiest path for first-timers. Confirm pickup time, drop-off time, and add-ons in your booking message before your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Black%20Diamond%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts, separately from your booking payment, and released after drop-off once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. To avoid any surprises, do a quick walkthrough video with your host at both pickup and return, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and empty the holding tanks if required. Keep all communication inside the RVezy app and you are fully protected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available in Black Diamond during winter?
Yes, winter RV trips are absolutely possible from Black Diamond, and the area's mild lowland winters make it one of the easier Pacific Northwest base camps for cold-season adventures. Daytime highs typically hover in the 40s F with snow rare in town itself, though passes like Chinook and Cayuse close for the winter. Look for RVezy listings advertised as four-season or winter-ready, which include heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces, and plan to stay at parks with shore power like Lake Sawyer Resort so you can run the heater all night. Bring tire chains for trips to Crystal Mountain or Snoqualmie Pass and you have a cozy ski-and-soak getaway waiting.
