Campgrounds near Carson, Washington
Carson sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, about an hour east of Portland and a short drive north of State Route 14. It is one of the closest bases to the Gorge from Portland, and the town itself is known for its hot springs, with a golf course, restaurants, and shopping nearby. The Wind River corridor runs north out of town into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, giving RV travelers quick access to both riverfront parks and forested campgrounds.
RV options close to town include Wind Mountain RV Park and Lodge and Dog Mountain RV Park along the Gorge, plus Timberlake Campground and RV Park inland. The Resort At Skamania Coves offers riverside sites and cabins a few minutes west, and Columbia Gorge Getaways provides forested campsites and glamping accommodations off Bear Creek Road.
The surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest covers 1.3 million acres and includes the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Elevations range from about 1,200 feet at the Wind River Work Center north of Carson to 12,276 feet at the summit of Mount Adams, so campgrounds range from low-elevation river sites to shaded old-growth stands within a short drive.
Things to do near Carson
Hiking is the main draw. Beacon Rock State Park sits in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, with 9,500 feet of Columbia River shoreline and more than 26 miles of roads and trails open to hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Beacon Rock itself is an 848-foot basalt volcanic plug, and a switchback trail leads to the summit for panoramic Gorge views. Panther Creek Falls and the Falls Creek Falls trailhead are both a short drive north of Carson.
The Wind River offers seasonal salmon and steelhead fishing, subject to state regulations, and the nearby Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife hatchery is worth a stop. Rock climbing at Beacon Rock, kiteboarding on the Columbia near Hood River, and the town's hot springs round out the options. Families often combine Gorge waterfall drives with stops in Stevenson or Hood River.

Summer is the busiest and driest window. Most Forest Service campgrounds along the Wind River, including Panther Creek, are managed by a concessionaire and open mid-May through mid-September. Book early for July and August weekends, since Gorge campgrounds fill quickly.
Spring brings wildflowers, waterfalls at peak flow, and unsettled weather. Beacon Rock State Park operates as a year-round camping park, with spring and early summer prime for wildflowers along the trails. Fall shoulder season delivers color along the trails and thinner crowds, though rain returns in earnest by November.
Winter is wet and cool. Most Forest Service sites close for the season, though private RV parks in and around Carson generally stay open. Wildfire season is a real planning factor: approximately 85 percent of Washington's wildfires are caused by people, and stage 2 fire restrictions are typical across the Gifford Pinchot National Forest from early July through late October. Visitors should check park alerts and burn restrictions before lighting any fires.
How to book campgrounds near Carson
National forest campgrounds in the area use the federal reservation system. Reservations for sites like Panther Creek can be made at recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Many Gifford Pinchot campgrounds have sites that can be reserved in advance, though some sites at each campground remain first-come, first-served.
Washington State Parks use a separate system. Online reservations can be made up to nine months in advance at washington.goingtocamp.com, and campsites can book fast, especially for holiday weekends. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to Washington State Parks, and camping fees also apply.
Private campgrounds and RV parks around Carson, including Columbia Gorge Getaways, The Resort At Skamania Coves, Wind Mountain RV Park and Lodge, Dog Mountain RV Park, and Timberlake Campground and RV Park, book directly through their own websites.
What to expect
Sites near Carson skew rustic-to-mid-tier. Forest Service campgrounds along the Wind River typically offer vault toilets, drinking water from hand pumps, picnic tables, and fire rings, with no hookups. Panther Creek Campground, for example, has 33 back-in sites arranged in a double loop along the creek and adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail. Private RV parks in the corridor provide the full hookups, showers, and laundry that renters generally expect.
Cell service is inconsistent once off Highway 14, and roads narrow quickly as they climb into the forest. Maximum vehicle length at Panther Creek is 25 feet, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. Bears and other wildlife are present. Store food securely, and expect stage 2 fire restrictions in the national forest during much of the summer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Carson, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Carson, WA?
RV rental in Carson, WA is affordable compared to coastal Washington hotspots, with most listings ranging from about $95 to $225 per night depending on season and RV type. Campervans and small travel trailers sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes that sleep six or more land at the higher end. For a cheap RV rental in Carson, target shoulder seasons like late April through mid-June or September through October when Columbia River Gorge demand drops but the weather is still pleasant. Filter for Instant Book listings and message hosts about weekly discounts, which many offer for stays of five nights or more. Booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead of summer Gorge weekends usually locks in the best rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carson,WashingtonWhat do I need to rent an RV in Carson, WA?
Renting an RV in Carson is simple. You need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and a regular Class C or non-commercial license from any U.S. state or Canadian province is all Washington requires for motorhomes and trailers under 26,000 pounds. No special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is needed. Visiting from outside North America? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to print or notarize. Most first-time renters in the Columbia River Gorge are surprised how quickly they go from booking to picking up the keys.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Carson RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Carson, WA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built into your booking. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, which is reassuring when you're navigating gusty Columbia Gorge winds or narrow Gifford Pinchot National Forest roads. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, so you stay in control. That means you can focus on Wind River hot springs and PCT trailheads instead of worst-case scenarios.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Carson RV trip?
Booking is lower risk than most people expect. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have breathing room if plans shift. Beyond that, refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel, which matters in the Gorge where wildfire smoke or winter storms can occasionally affect travel. Review the current cancellation terms in your RVezy account before confirming, or reach out to RVezy support who can walk you through your specific booking. Bottom line: you can plan your Columbia River Gorge adventure with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Carson, WA?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Carson, WA is easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs, often with no extra fee or just a small cleaning surcharge. Carson is a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome on most trails in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, at Beacon Rock State Park (with a Discover Pass), and along the Wind River. Many local campgrounds like Beacon Rock State Park and Cascade Locks KOA across the river also allow pets. Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences, and pack a tie-out so your dog can lounge outside the rig at camp.
parks.wa.gov/know-rules/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental in Carson?
Yes, RV delivery in Carson, WA is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many Vancouver, Camas, and Portland-area hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Beacon Rock State Park, Carson Hot Springs Resort, or a private property near the Wind River, then set up the awning, level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching and enter Carson as your destination so you can see drop-off fees upfront. This is the easiest way to enjoy a Carson motorhome rental without getting behind the wheel of a big rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carson,WashingtonHow far can I travel on a Carson RV rental, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Carson-area hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a growing number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Pacific Northwest loop. From Carson, Portland is about 50 miles west, Mount Hood is roughly 60 miles south, Mount St. Helens visitor centers sit about 70 miles northwest, and the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach is around 130 miles. Bend, Oregon is a scenic 220-mile drive. When comparing listings, check the mileage policy in the pricing breakdown and message the host if you're planning a bigger loop. A quick note up front almost always means a smoother trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carson,WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Carson, WA?
Carson sits in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, so the best campgrounds near Carson, WA are minutes from your pickup. Beacon Rock State Park (about 12 miles west) offers wooded sites with access to the famous Beacon Rock summit hike. Panther Creek Campground in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest sits roughly 8 miles north and is a quiet creek-side favorite. Cascade Locks KOA, just across the Bridge of the Gods in Oregon, has full hookups and easy access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Home Valley Campground in nearby Home Valley is a riverside option for windsurfers and anglers. Washington State Parks fill fast for summer weekends, so reserve early.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/beacon-rock-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Carson, WA in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Carson RV trip is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to mid-80s and rainfall is at its lowest. July and August are the warmest months and best for swimming holes along the Wind River and hiking Dog Mountain's wildflower meadows. Late September and early October bring stunning Gorge fall colors and far fewer crowds. Winters are wet and chilly with average highs in the upper 30s to low 40s, but a winter RV camping Carson trip can be magical if you want hot springs and snowy waterfall hikes. Book summer weekends 2 to 3 months ahead.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Carson really doable?
Yes, and a first time renting an RV in the Columbia River Gorge is more approachable than you'd think. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the engine, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures so you leave confident. If a big motorhome feels intimidating, start with a campervan rental in Carson or a small travel trailer; both drive much like a large SUV. Better yet, book delivery and skip driving entirely. Carson's main routes (State Route 14 and the Wind River Highway) are paved, well-marked, and far less stressful than I-5 through Seattle. Ask your host to demo the backup camera, it's a game-changer for newbies.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Carson includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you've got a flat on State Route 14, a dead battery at Panther Creek Campground, or a propane question at midnight. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for vehicle-specific questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell service in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest can be spotty, so save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Carson. With backup like that, you can hike Dog Mountain or chase waterfalls knowing you're covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Carson RV rental into Oregon or across the border to Canada?
Yes. Crossing the Bridge of the Gods into Oregon is one of the most popular RV road trips from Carson, and it's fully allowed on RVezy rentals: think Hood River, Mount Hood, Bend, and the Oregon Coast. Multi-state travel through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California is generally fine too. Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host's insurance, so message them directly through the listing before booking if you're planning to head north to British Columbia. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage stops at the border. From Carson, Vancouver BC is about a 6-hour drive north on I-5.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Carson RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, so let's make it predictable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG. Washington gas prices typically sit higher than the national average. For a 300-mile loop to Mount Hood and back in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel depending on current prices. Fill up in Stevenson or across the river in Cascade Locks before heading deep into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where stations are scarce and pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Carson?
For peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day), reserve Washington State Parks like Beacon Rock as soon as your dates open through the official Washington State Parks reservation system. National Forest sites like Panther Creek open 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov, and weekends often fill within hours. Shoulder season (May, late September, October) is much easier, you can often snag a site 2 to 4 weeks out. Private parks like Cascade Locks KOA tend to have more flexibility but still book up for Gorge events. If your first choice is full, search Tuesday through Thursday arrivals, midweek availability around Carson is dramatically better.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Carson, WA?
Carson's roads are scenic and very manageable for RVs. State Route 14 (the Lewis and Clark Highway) hugs the Columbia River with gentle curves and great viewpoints, while the Wind River Highway heading north into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is paved and well-maintained. The main thing to watch is wind: the Columbia River Gorge is famous for strong east-west gusts, especially in spring and summer afternoons, which can buffet tall motorhomes. Drive in the morning when winds are calmer, keep both hands on the wheel, and reduce speed on the Bridge of the Gods. Winter can bring ice and occasional snow at higher elevations, so check WSDOT conditions before heading toward Mount Adams.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Carson?
You've got options for every comfort level. Full-hookup parks like Cascade Locks KOA offer water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry. Washington State Parks such as Beacon Rock have water and electric at many sites plus a centralized dump station. National Forest campgrounds like Panther Creek are more rustic: vault toilets, potable water spigots, no hookups, perfect for boondocking-style camping. For dump and fresh water on the road, the dump station at Beacon Rock State Park is open seasonally, and Cascade Locks Marine Park across the river offers services. Top off fresh water before heading into the national forest, where spigots can be seasonal.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/beacon-rock-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Carson?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most Carson RV rentals include a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeping 2 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and dining/lounge seating with seatbelts for travel. Many listings also offer a generator for off-grid power, a TV with DVD or streaming, outdoor awning, and Wi-Fi hotspot (sometimes as an add-on). Campervans are more compact but still include sleeping, cooking, and often a small wet bath. Each listing's amenity list shows exactly what's onboard, so you can match the rig to your trip style.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carson,WashingtonWhat add-ons and extras can I get with a Carson RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with dishes and utensils, generator use ($5 to $15 per hour or day), camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many Carson-area hosts also offer delivery and setup at Beacon Rock State Park or Cascade Locks KOA (typically $1.50 to $3 per mile from their location). Pickup and drop-off times are flexible, just coordinate with your host through the RVezy app. Mileage policies vary by listing, with included miles ranging from 100 per night to fully unlimited. Bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package usually costs less than booking a hotel and is far more memorable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carson,WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, with the trip cost typically split between a deposit at confirmation and the balance due before pickup. A refundable security deposit (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held on your card a few days before the trip starts, not charged unless there's damage or a policy issue, and released after the host inspects the RV on return. To avoid hold-ups, take date-stamped photos of the rig at pickup and drop-off, fill the fuel and propane as instructed, and follow the mileage and generator-hour limits. That way your full deposit comes back quickly after your Carson adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Carson, WA?
Carson is the perfect launchpad for a Pacific Northwest RV road trip. Head 50 miles west to Portland for food trucks and Powell's Books, or 60 miles south to Mount Hood for alpine lakes and the historic Timberline Lodge. Drive 70 miles northwest to Mount St. Helens for jaw-dropping volcanic landscapes at the Johnston Ridge Observatory area. Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock on the Oregon Coast are about 130 miles west, ideal for a 2-night detour. For a bigger adventure, Bend, Oregon is a 220-mile scenic drive south through the Cascades. Stop in Hood River (just 20 miles east) for craft cider, windsurfing views, and the Fruit Loop orchard drive, a perfect half-day from your Carson basecamp.
