Campgrounds and RV parks near Clarkston Heights-Vineland, WA

The Snake and Clearwater Rivers drive most activity. Jet-boat excursions into Hells Canyon depart from Clarkston and Lewiston docks, and anglers target steelhead, smallmouth bass, and sturgeon depending on the season. Boat ramps at Hells Gate State Park, Chief Timothy Campground, and Hells Canyon RV Resort and Marina put watercraft on the river within minutes of a campsite. On land, a paved levee trail follows both riverbanks for easy walking and cycling. Hells Gate State Park adds swim beaches, the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center, and connector trails that climb toward the canyon rim. Day trips reach the Palouse wheat country to the north, Lewis and Clark historic sites along US-12, and Nez Perce National Historical Park sites east of Lewiston.

The Lewis-Clark Valley has a semi-arid, warm-summer Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, low-snow winters relative to the rest of the inland Northwest. The low elevation gives Lewiston its Banana Belt reputation, with no month averaging below freezing. Summer highs regularly push into the upper 80s and 90s Fahrenheit, and shade at riverside sites becomes a real consideration when booking. Prime RV season runs April through October. Chief Timothy Campground operates on that schedule, opening April 1 and closing October 31. Hells Gate State Park keeps its campground open year-round. Private parks along the river, including Appleside RV, Granite Lake RV Resort, and Hells Canyon RV Resort and Marina, generally run year-round with full hookups. Spring brings steelhead runs and the highest river flows. Late summer heat can drive campers toward shaded, waterfront sites, and wildfire smoke from regional fires occasionally settles into the valley in August and September. Fall offers the most stable weather: warm days, cool nights, and lower crowds after Labor Day.

Expect a river-town feel rather than a wilderness setting. Most campgrounds sit on or near US-12, with paved sites, full hookups at private parks, and easy access to grocery stores, fuel, and RV service in Clarkston and Lewiston. Chief Timothy Campground reaches its sites over a causeway onto Silcott Island and offers pull-through and back-in sites, showers, laundry, a swim area, and dockside water access. Hells Gate State Park adds a marina, beach, and the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center. In-town parks tend to be tighter and more paved, with the trade-off of walkable amenities. Cell service is generally reliable across major carriers in the valley. Summer sun is intense, awnings and shade shelters are useful, and mosquitoes stay manageable along moving water but pick up near backwater sloughs after dusk.
