Campgrounds and RV parks near Cowiche, WA

Cowiche Canyon sits right at the town's doorstep, with shrub-steppe hiking, mountain-biking trails, and basalt cliffs. A segment of the William O. Douglas Trail crosses the Cowiche Wildlife Area, offering views of shrub-steppe habitat and the Yakima Valley, and the unit also allows horseback riding. Water recreation centers on the Yakima River, which winds for 27 miles through basalt cliffs and rolling desert hills between Ellensburg and Yakima, with Blue Ribbon trout fishing and family-friendly Class 1 rafting. Wine touring is another draw, with dozens of tasting rooms across the Yakima Valley. Families based at Yakima Sportsman State Park can fish a juvenile pond and birdwatch a wetland that supports more than 130 bird species.

The Yakima Valley sits in the rain shadow of the Cascades and has an arid continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters that often dip below freezing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights, and tourism sources commonly point to May through June and September through October as the best visiting months. Developed state-park camping is seasonal. Yakima Sportsman is normally open from the beginning of March through the end of September, with the off-season covered by a winter schedule. Private RV parks in the Yakima and Naches area generally operate year-round, with some amenities reduced in winter. The BLM canyon campgrounds at Umtanum, Lmuma Creek, Big Pines, and Roza stay open year-round, on reservation from May through September and first-come the rest of the year. Fire and wildlife rules tighten in summer. Starting June 15, restrictions on WDFW-managed lands in Eastern Washington prohibit campfires, including those in fire rings, though personal camp stoves and lanterns fueled by propane are allowed. Elk closures affect part of the Cowiche Unit in winter and spring.

The riverside canyon sites are basic. Hookups and potable water are not provided, so arrive with full fresh-water tanks and plan to dump elsewhere. Private parks in Naches and Yakima offer full hookups and showers, and Yakima Sportsman provides flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. The canyon and shrub-steppe environment has real hazards for renters new to the desert. Watch for rattlesnakes, bees, and poison ivy, and expect limited shade at canyon sites, so an awning, sunshade, and extra drinking water are useful. BLM canyon sites cap occupancy at 10 people and two vehicles per site, with only one RV per site and a seven-day stay limit. Winds in the open valley and canyon can be strong, especially in summer afternoons and overnight, so secure awnings and lightweight gear before going to bed.
