Campgrounds near East Cathlamet, Washington
East Cathlamet sits on the north bank of the lower Columbia River in Wahkiakum County, Washington, surrounded by Cascadian forest, tidal sloughs, and farmland. The area is a working-river landscape, with ocean-bound cargo ships, dairy pastures on Puget Island, and the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-Tailed Deer all within a short drive. State Route 4 connects the town west toward Naselle and east toward Longview, and a small ferry crosses to Westport, Oregon.
Most RV-friendly camping near East Cathlamet is found along the river corridor and in the surrounding state forests. Skamokawa Vista Park, just west of town on the Columbia, is the primary developed riverfront option. Inland sites in the Clatsop State Forest and on Washington Department of Natural Resources lands offer quieter forest stays, while RV parks across the river in Clatskanie, Oregon, expand the choices for travelers crossing the Columbia.
The region is best treated as a base for slow exploration: lower-river paddling, birdwatching, fishing for salmon and sturgeon, and day trips to Astoria and Long Beach.
Things to do near East Cathlamet
Water is the main draw. The Lower Columbia River and its sloughs offer flatwater paddling, salmon and sturgeon fishing, and ship-watching from the riverbank. Skamokawa Vista Park has a boat launch on Brooks Slough and a sandy beach for swimming and beachcombing.
On land, the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge protects Columbian white-tailed deer and offers wildlife viewing along a quiet auto loop. Puget Island is a flat, low-traffic ride for cyclists, and the small Wahkiakum County ferry to Westport, Oregon, makes a quick add-on. The Clatsop State Forest, reached via Highway 202 in Oregon, has equestrian and hiking trails near Northrup Creek.
Families often pair a stay here with the drive to Astoria for the Columbia River Maritime Museum, or to Long Beach for the Pacific coast.

Seasonal patterns and what to plan around
- spring
March - May
57° / 37°F 115 mmCool and showery; easier midweek bookings
- summer
June - August
72° / 50°F 35 mmDry, breezy peak season; riverfront sites fill fast
- fall
September - November
59° / 43°F 140 mmSalmon runs and rising rain; fog common on river
- winter
December - February
45° / 34°F 216 mmWettest season; mild but persistently rainy and overcast
Summer is the prime RV window. June through early September is the driest stretch of the year, with long daylight hours and comfortable highs. Riverfront sites at Skamokawa Vista Park book heavily on weekends, and reviewers consistently note that afternoon winds along the Columbia can be strong, so awnings and tents should be staked carefully.
Fall brings salmon runs, fog over the river, and steadily rising rainfall. By November the lower Columbia is firmly back in its wet season. Winter is mild but persistently rainy and overcast, with the heaviest precipitation falling December through February. Some inland forest sites and gravel access roads can flood or become rutted, and a few seasonal campgrounds reduce services.
Spring is a shoulder season. Trails dry out, wildflowers appear in the refuge, and bookings are easier midweek, though showers and lingering cool nights are still the rule into May.
How to book RV sites in the area
Skamokawa Vista Park takes reservations online through the Port of Wahkiakum District 2 website at wahport2.org, with bookings accepted up to fourteen months in advance. Yurts at Vista Park are blocked from online booking and must be reserved by calling the park office. Summer weekends fill early, so reserving as soon as dates are set is wise.
Oregon Department of Forestry sites in the Clatsop State Forest, including Northrup Creek Horse Camp, are reservation-only through ReserveAmerica, and walk-ins are not accepted.
Washington DNR sites such as Tunerville operate first-come, first-served with no reservations, and require a Discover Pass displayed in the vehicle. Privately run options like the Clatskanie River Inn and RV Park and RV Outdoor adventures and Cabins book directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Riverfront sites along the Columbia are open and exposed. Afternoon wind off the water is a near-daily feature, which is great for kites and ship-watching but hard on awnings and lightweight gear. Sites set back in the trees are calmer but lose the view of passing freighters.
Cell coverage is patchy outside town. Forest campgrounds like Tunerville have effectively no service, so download maps and reservations beforehand. Discover Passes are required at all Washington DNR sites, and Oregon state forest campgrounds have their own fee structure.
Expect a mix of full-hookup, partial-hookup, and dry sites at Vista Park, basic pit toilets and hand-pump water at the Clatsop State Forest horse camp, and full hookups at private RV parks across the river. Bring layers, rain gear, and bug spray for late spring evenings near the sloughs.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near East Cathlamet, WA
How much does an RV rental in East Cathlamet, WA typically cost?
RV rental in Cathlamet is one of the best values on the Lower Columbia. Most travel trailers and camper vans start around $95 to $160 per night, while Class C motorhomes typically range from $175 to $285 per night. Because Cathlamet is a small rural town in Wahkiakum County, you avoid the price spikes you would see in Seattle or Portland. To save even more, book midweek, travel in May or late September, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book on RVezy to lock in the best Cathlamet rigs before the July Bald Eagle Days and August Wahkiakum County Fair weekends sell out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cathlamet%2C%20WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Cathlamet?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cathlamet, no commercial driver license (CDL) or special endorsement required. Washington State only requires a CDL for certain large commercial vehicles, and personal RV use is exempt, so any standard Class C, Class B campervan, travel trailer, or fifth wheel on RVezy is fair game. RVezy requires renters to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. International visitors should pair their home license with an International Driving Permit from their home auto club, and you are ready to roll across Highway 4.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help comes with my Cathlamet RV rental?
Every RVezy booking automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can relax and focus on the Columbia River views. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, and during checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip. If something goes sideways on Highway 4 or the windy stretch toward Skamokawa, one phone call gets you tire changes, jump starts, lockout help, or a tow. Most first-time renters tell us this is the moment they relax and start enjoying their Cathlamet RV trip with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Cathlamet RV booking?
You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you are never locked in immediately. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. The full details live on the RVezy Help Center and in your booking confirmation email. Pro tip: lock in that dream Cathlamet rig early for the busy July Bald Eagle Days weekend, knowing you have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cathlamet RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Cathlamet options are plentiful on RVezy, just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter and browse rigs that welcome your furry co-pilot. Skamokawa Vista Park allows leashed pets, and the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-Tailed Deer offers leashed-dog-friendly auto tour routes where you can spot deer and bald eagles right from the road. The Wahkiakum County Ferry to Westport, Oregon even lets pets ride along. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any deposit or per-pet fee, and bring an old towel for sandy paws after a Columbia River beach romp at Vista Park.
fws.gov/refuge/julia-butler-hansenCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Cathlamet?
Yes, RV delivery in Cathlamet is one of the smartest moves for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts in Wahkiakum County will drop the rig right at Skamokawa Vista Park, Elochoman Slough Marina, or County Line Park, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight riverside site, and no figuring out the awning solo. Just use the Delivery filter when you search and check each host's delivery radius and fee. Pro tip: delivery to Vista Park is especially popular because the riverfront sites can get windy, and a pro setup makes the difference.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cathlamet%2C%20WashingtonHow far can I drive from Cathlamet, and what are the mileage policies?
You have a fantastic launch pad: from Cathlamet you are about 30 miles to Astoria, Oregon (via the Puget Island ferry), roughly 50 miles to the Long Beach Peninsula, 75 miles to Mount St. Helens, 90 miles to Portland, and around 130 miles to Mount Rainier National Park's Nisqually entrance. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Pacific Northwest loop. Check the listing's mileage allowance before booking, and message the host if you are planning a bigger RV road trip from Cathlamet. Pro tip: the Wahkiakum County Ferry to Westport runs year-round and saves miles versus driving around through Longview.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cathlamet%2C%20WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Cathlamet for an RV trip?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Cathlamet. Skamokawa Vista Park is the local favorite, with full and partial hookup sites and yurts right on the Columbia. Elochoman Slough Marina in downtown Cathlamet has riverview RV spaces with 30/50 amp power and water, steps from River Mile 38 Brewing. County Line Park, just east on the Columbia, offers electric sites and a dump station. Cathlamet Chevron and RV Park is a handy quick-stop option on SR-4. Pro tip: book Vista Park 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, especially during the August county fair.
wahkiakumpd2.com/skamokawa-vista-park/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Cathlamet?
Late June through mid-September is prime time in Cathlamet, with daytime highs typically in the 70s°F, long evenings on the Columbia, and the lowest rainfall of the year, perfect weather for a Cathlamet RV trip. May and late September are the smart-money shoulder seasons: green hillsides, salmon runs, and far fewer crowds. Winter is mild but very wet (40s to low 50s°F highs and significant rain), which is why locals call the Lower Columbia a temperate rainforest. Pro tip: time your visit for Bald Eagle Days in mid-to-late July or the Wahkiakum County Fair in mid-August for full small-town Pacific Northwest charm.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never rented an RV before. How does the pickup work in Cathlamet?
First time renting an RV? You are in good hands. Every RVezy host walks you through a full orientation at pickup, covering how to start the generator, dump the tanks, run the propane stove, operate the slide-outs, and hook up at a campground like Skamokawa Vista Park. You are never just handed keys and waved off. Many Cathlamet hosts also send video tutorials before your trip and stay reachable by message throughout. If you would rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: take photos and short videos during your walkthrough so you can replay the steps when you arrive at your first campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road near Cathlamet?
You are never stranded: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Highway 4 between Cathlamet and Skamokawa or a dead battery at County Line Park is one phone call away from help. Tow services, jump starts, lockout assistance, and tire changes are all covered. You can also message your host directly, since most Wahkiakum County hosts know the rig inside out and can troubleshoot small issues over the phone. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell coverage on the rural stretches of SR-4 can be spotty, so download offline maps before you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cathlamet rental across the border into Oregon or Canada?
Yes, Oregon trips are easy and popular, you are literally a 10-minute ferry ride from Westport, Oregon via the Wahkiakum County Ferry, the last operating ferry on the Lower Columbia. Many hosts also welcome longer cross-border travel to British Columbia, but you must confirm cross-border travel with your host before booking since insurance and protection coverage can vary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A popular RV road trip from Cathlamet runs west to Astoria and the Oregon Coast, south to Tillamook for cheese-tasting, then back north through Long Beach. Pro tip: bring your passport for the Canada option and budget extra ferry time on summer Saturdays.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic expectations help you budget smart: Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 MPG, Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer around 10 to 13 MPG. Washington gas prices tend to run higher than the national average, and the Cathlamet Chevron on SR-4 is the main in-town option. For a 200-mile round-trip weekend in a Class C, plan on a modest fuel budget that you can estimate based on current local pump prices. Pro tip: top up in Longview or Kelso before heading west on Highway 4, prices in the bigger I-5 towns are often a few cents cheaper than rural stops.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cathlamet?
For summer weekends at Skamokawa Vista Park, book 3 to 6 months ahead through the Wahkiakum Port District 2 reservation system, especially mid-July through August when Bald Eagle Days and the Wahkiakum County Fair bring crowds. Washington State Parks (like nearby Lewis and Clark State Park) take reservations up to 9 months in advance via the Washington State Parks reservation site. Mid-week stays in May, June, and September are usually easy to grab even a few weeks out. Pro tip: if Vista Park is full, check Elochoman Slough Marina in downtown Cathlamet, it often has riverview RV space available even on short notice, and you can walk to the brewery and farmers market.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are the driving conditions like around Cathlamet?
Driving an RV around Cathlamet is genuinely manageable, even for first-timers. State Route 4, the main artery through Wahkiakum County, is a winding two-lane highway hugging the Columbia River, scenic but slower than an interstate, so plan on 45 to 50 mph in most stretches. There are no mountain passes between Cathlamet and either Longview or Astoria. Watch for elk crossings near the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge, log trucks on weekdays, and crosswinds on the Cathlamet-Puget Island bridge. Fog can settle in the early mornings along the lower Columbia, so check real-time WSDOT travel info before you head out. Pro tip: drive the ferry and bridge stretches first thing in the morning when traffic is lightest.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Cathlamet?
Most campgrounds offering RV camping in Cathlamet are well-equipped. Skamokawa Vista Park has full hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50 amp), partial hookup sites, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a sandy Columbia River beach. Elochoman Slough Marina offers 30/50 amp power and water on riverview spaces, plus access to River Mile 38 Brewing and a farmers market. County Line Park has electric hookups and an on-site dump station. For dumping and freshwater fills between stops, the Cathlamet Chevron on SR-4 is the in-town option. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot fresh water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, marina sites can sit a bit farther from hookup posts than expected.
wahkiakumpd2.com/skamokawa-vista-park/What's actually inside the RVs available in Cathlamet?
You will be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Cathlamet (Class C) sleeps 4 to 6 with a queen bed, dinette and overcab bunks, full kitchen (fridge, propane stove, microwave), wet bath with toilet and shower, furnace, roof A/C, and seatbelted seating for road travel. Travel trailers offer similar layouts without the cab. Campervan rental Cathlamet options (Class B) are nimble for the Wahkiakum County Ferry and Puget Island roads, with a compact kitchenette and convertible bed. Many hosts include kitchen kits, bedding, outdoor chairs, and a generator. Pro tip: filter by sleep count and check listing photos for specifics like a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, or solar, then message the host with any must-haves.

Mileage policies vary: some hosts include a daily mileage allowance, others offer unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask about a late return or early pickup window if your campsite check-in does not line up perfectly with the host's standard times.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cathlamet%2C%20WashingtonHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy and released back to your card after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup, return the rig clean with tanks dumped (most Cathlamet hosts point you to the Chevron dump station on SR-4), and refuel to the level shown at pickup. Pro tip: keep all receipts and timestamped photos, they are your best friend if any questions come up.
