Camping near Eatonville, Washington
Eatonville sits in Pierce County on State Route 161, roughly 30 miles southeast of Tacoma and about 15 miles from the Nisqually entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The town works well as an RV base: the surrounding foothills hold reservoir lakes, working farmland, and dense second-growth forest, with paved highway access most of the year.
The closest developed camping is at Alder Lake Park, located about 10 miles south of Eatonville on the northern end of Alder Lake, where visitors can enjoy camping, boating, swimming, and fishing. Campers can choose between 173 sites in the three campgrounds within the park (Main, Osprey, and Elk Plain), plus Rocky Point, part of Alder Lake Park, about four miles east of the main entrance on Highway 7, with 25 sites offering water and electric hookups.
Beyond the Tacoma Power parks, private options within a short drive include Rainbow RV Resort, Camp Lakeview, and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground. This mix of utility-district, private, and national park camping gives RV renters flexibility on hookups, price tier, and proximity to Rainier trailheads.
Things to do near Eatonville
The signature family stop is Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. The wildlife park is located near Eatonville, and its primary feature is a tram tour that takes visitors through a large free-roam area holding bison, elk, moose, and caribou. Guests can also drive their own vehicles on a Wild Drive tour or take a Keeper Adventure Tour off-road in a Jeep with a keeper.
Mount Rainier National Park is the other main draw. From Cougar Rock, experienced hikers and backpackers can access the strenuous Wonderland Trail, which encircles the park for 93 miles, and Paradise offers subalpine wildflower meadows in mid-summer.
At Alder Lake itself, the reservoir supports boat launching, swim beaches, and trout fishing. Pioneer Farm Museum and Ohop Indian Village in Eatonville is a hands-on stop for younger kids on a rainy afternoon.

Peak camping season runs late June through early September, when Mount Rainier's high country is snow-free and the Alder Lake reservoir is at full pool. The Mount Rainier campground season generally runs from late May to early October depending on snow conditions. Note that Ohanapecosh Campground has been closed for a rehabilitation project, so plan around Cougar Rock and White River for national park sites.
Shoulder seasons bring trade-offs. Spring is wet with lingering snow at elevation, and fall delivers color plus quieter campgrounds before winter closures. Camping at Alder Lake Park is open year-round, except for an annual closure between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1. The 35-site group camp is open April 15 to Oct. 15, and all Tacoma Power parks are closed Dec. 20 to Jan. 1.
Winter camping at Rainier is limited. All drive-in park campgrounds are closed, with deep snow covering campgrounds like Cougar Rock until spring.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

How to book campsites near Eatonville
Tacoma Power runs its own reservation system for Alder Lake Park and Rocky Point. Sites are booked through the Tacoma Power Parks portal at tacomapower.goingtocamp.com or by phone; walk-ups are possible but not guaranteed on summer weekends. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance for dates between May 15 and September 15, and the rest of the year is first-come, first-served. Sites are available across Main, Osprey, Elk Plain, Rocky Point, and group camps, with full hookups, partial hookups, tent sites, and group camping options.
Mount Rainier uses Recreation.gov. Cougar Rock accepts reservations for roughly late June through early September on a 6-month rolling window, with new dates opening at 7:00 AM PT each day. White River Campground is first-come, first-served for the entire season with no advance reservations; payment is handled through Recreation.gov's Scan-and-Pay system, so download the app before arrival because there is no cellular service at the campground. Private parks such as Rainbow RV Resort, Camp Lakeview, and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground book directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Eatonville range from full-hookup RV pads at private resorts to rustic national park loops with no hookups. Cell coverage is spotty once you leave SR 161: at Cougar Rock, cell service is limited and most of the campground has little to no coverage. Download offline maps and reservation apps before leaving town.
RV size matters at Rainier. Motor homes over 35 feet and trailers over 27 feet are not allowed to enter Cougar Rock, and turns on loop roads are tight enough that vehicle damage is likely. There is no working dump station at Cougar Rock. Alder Lake Park handles larger rigs more comfortably, and Rocky Point offers a quieter alternative with electric and water hookups.
Expect cool nights year-round at elevation, wildlife activity in the free-roam areas, and bear-aware food storage rules inside the national park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Eatonville, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Eatonville, WA?
RV rental in Eatonville is one of the most affordable ways to experience Mount Rainier National Park. On RVezy, nightly rates typically range from about $95 for a compact travel trailer to $250 or more for a fully loaded Class A motorhome, with campervans and Class C motorhomes landing in the middle. To find a cheap RV rental in Eatonville, book mid-week trips, travel in May or late September shoulder season, and use the price filter to sort by budget. Many Eatonville-area hosts also offer weekly discounts, so a 5 to 7 night Mount Rainier loop often costs less per night than a weekend booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Eatonville,WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Eatonville, Washington?
Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Eatonville. Washington State does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license for any motorhome or trailer typically rented on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, campervans, travel trailers and fifth wheels. You'll need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking, which only takes a few minutes. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto club). That's it, you're cleared to drive to Paradise.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/driver-licensesIs my Eatonville RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every motorhome rental in Eatonville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for most accidental damage to the vehicle from the moment you drive off. During checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your comfort zone, with options ranging from basic to premium coverage. With gravel Forest Service roads around Mount Rainier and the occasional rockslide on Highway 706, having that built-in coverage means you can focus on the wildflowers and not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Eatonville RV trip?
RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts, which makes booking your Eatonville RV trip well in advance low-risk. The policy includes a grace period right after booking so you can lock in a great rig early. The exact refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and full cancellation details are shown at checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. Tip: book your Cougar Rock or Ohanapecosh campsite the same day you book the RV so the dates line up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Eatonville RV rental?
Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Eatonville welcome your four-legged co-pilot. Just check the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of motorhomes and trailers ready for Fido. A few local heads-ups: dogs are allowed (leashed) inside Mount Rainier National Park campgrounds like Cougar Rock, but they're not permitted on any park trails, only on roads, parking lots and campgrounds. The great workaround? Take the pup hiking in the surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest or along the Foothills Trail, both dog-friendly. Alder Lake Park, just 20 minutes south of Eatonville, also allows leashed pets and has lakefront sites perfect for a swim after a long drive.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Mount Rainier?
Yes, RV delivery in Eatonville is a game-changer, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a 30-foot motorhome up Highway 706 on day one. Many local RVezy hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at popular spots like Cougar Rock Campground inside Mount Rainier National Park, Alder Lake Park, or Rainbow RV Resort right in Eatonville. They handle the leveling, hookups, slide-outs and orientation walkthrough so all you have to do is unpack the cooler. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, message the host with your destination, and they'll quote a delivery fee (usually based on round-trip mileage). It turns your campervan rental Eatonville booking into a true turn-key vacation.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmHow far can I drive on a Mount Rainier RV trip from Eatonville?
You're perfectly positioned in Eatonville for a Mount Rainier RV trip, with the Nisqually Entrance to the park only about 30 miles (45 minutes) east. Other easy day-trip and weekend destinations include Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument (about 90 miles south), Olympic National Park's Hood Canal side (around 110 miles), Seattle (75 miles north) and the Oregon coast (roughly 220 miles). Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for longer loops. Filter by Unlimited Mileage on RVezy or message the host before booking to confirm the daily allowance fits your route.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Eatonville for RV camping?
You have great options near Eatonville. Top picks for RV camping include Alder Lake Park (Tacoma Power operated, water and electric hookups, lakeside sites about 20 minutes south), Cougar Rock Campground inside Mount Rainier National Park (RVs up to 35 feet, no hookups but a dump station on site), White River Campground inside the park (RVs up to 27 feet, no hookups), and Mounthaven Resort in Ashford with full-hookup sites about a half mile from the Nisqually park entrance. For a lakefront stay, Mineral Lake offers tent and RV sites about 15 minutes south. Note that Ohanapecosh Campground has been closed for a multi-year rehabilitation, so plan around Cougar Rock or White River.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time to visit Eatonville in an RV?
The sweet spot for an Eatonville RV trip is July through early September, when Mount Rainier's iconic wildflower meadows at Paradise are in full bloom and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s to low 80s. June still has lingering snow at higher elevations but waterfalls are roaring and crowds are lighter. September brings crisp air, fall colors and the best chance at clear mountain views since the marine layer thins out. May and October are shoulder-season bargains but pack rain gear, west-side rainfall in Ashford and Longmire averages over 80 inches a year. For the absolute money-saver: book a mid-week trip in late September.
weather.gov/sew/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Eatonville?
You'll do great, and Eatonville is honestly one of the friendliest places in Washington to learn. Your RVezy host provides a full pickup walkthrough covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, propane and the dump valves, so you're never left guessing. Highway 161 and Highway 7 between Eatonville and the Nisqually Entrance are wide, low-traffic and scenic, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Inside Mount Rainier National Park, stick to the main Paradise road and avoid Sunrise Road past White River Campground (it's narrow, steep and the park does not recommend RVs beyond that point). First time renting an RV? Book a smaller Class C or campervan under 25 feet and consider delivery for total peace of mind.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Mount Rainier?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 706 or a dead battery at Alder Lake is one phone call away from help. The dispatcher can arrange a tow, jump-start, tire change, fuel delivery or lockout service to your location. Cell service is spotty around Mount Rainier (mostly limited to Ashford, Packwood, Eatonville and parts of Paradise), so screenshot your booking confirmation and the roadside number before you head into the park. Your host is also a quick text or call away, and RVezy support is available from booking through drop-off.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Eatonville RV rental to Canada or other states?
Yes, multi-state and even cross-border road trips from Eatonville are popular and totally doable, you just need to confirm with your host first. Travel into Canada (think a loop up to Vancouver, BC or Banff) is permitted with many hosts as long as insurance coverage extends across the border, so message before booking. Crossing into Oregon for a Mount Hood or coastal loop is straightforward and rarely an issue. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Favorite multi-state routes from Eatonville include the full Cascade Loop, the Oregon Coast, and a Mount Rainier to Glacier National Park epic.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for an Eatonville RV trip?
Budget around 8-10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6-8 MPG for a Class A, and 12-18 MPG for a campervan or a truck pulling a travel trailer. Gas prices in Pierce County typically run a bit above the national average, so check apps like GasBuddy before you fill up, and top off in Eatonville or Elbe (Highway 7) before heading into the park, since fuel options inside Mount Rainier National Park are limited. For a typical 4-night Mount Rainier loop covering about 250 miles, expect $100-$180 in fuel. Pro tip: most local hosts ask you to return the RV with a full tank, so fill up at the Eatonville Chevron on your way back.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mount Rainier?
Book early, especially for July and August. Cougar Rock and White River Campgrounds inside Mount Rainier National Park release reservations on Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window, and popular weekend dates can sell out within minutes of opening. Alder Lake Park and other Tacoma Power campgrounds also fill fast for summer holidays. Aim to book your campsite the same day you book your RV on RVezy so dates align. Couldn't snag a spot? Try Mounthaven Resort or Rainbow RV Resort for private full-hookup options, or use Recreation.gov's cancellation alerts. Bonus insider tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) have dramatically better availability all season long.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2835What are the local driving conditions like around Eatonville?
Driving an RV around Eatonville is genuinely enjoyable, the roads are scenic, the speeds are moderate, and traffic is light outside summer weekends. Highways 7, 161 and 706 (the main routes to Mount Rainier's Nisqually Entrance) are paved and RV-friendly. The biggest things to watch: tight switchbacks and steep grades climbing toward Paradise (use lower gears, both up and down), occasional logging trucks on rural roads, and elk crossings at dawn and dusk near Alder Lake. Inside the park, the speed limit is 35 mph and Sunrise Road is not recommended for RVs past White River Campground. In late fall through spring, carry tire chains, Washington State law requires them in posted areas.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time/mountainpassesWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Eatonville?
It varies in a fun way. Private RV parks like Rainbow RV Resort in Eatonville and Mounthaven Resort in Ashford offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, showers, laundry and dump stations, perfect for first-timers and longer stays. Tacoma Power campgrounds like Alder Lake Park provide water and electric hookups, hot showers and a dump station. National Park Service campgrounds inside Mount Rainier (Cougar Rock and White River) are no-hookup but have potable water, flush toilets and fire rings, with a dump station at Cougar Rock. Need to fill fresh water or dump on the way home? The Alder Lake dump station is the most convenient stop within 20 minutes of Eatonville.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's included inside RVs available for rent in Eatonville?
Pretty much everything you need for a cozy Mount Rainier basecamp. Most RVs on RVezy in the Eatonville area come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, fold-out dinette or bunk beds (so a Class C easily sleeps 4-6), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, heat and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, generator or solar setup, propane firepit, camp chairs and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the listing, but since cell service near Mount Rainier is patchy anyway, plan to download Netflix shows and offline maps before you go. Check each listing's amenity list to see what's included.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/cellservice.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Eatonville?
You've got loads of flexibility. Popular add-ons from Eatonville-area hosts include linen and towel packages ($25-$75), kitchen kits, generators, propane firepits, bike racks, kayaks/SUPs and pet-cleaning fees if you're bringing the dog. Many hosts offer RV delivery Eatonville with setup at your campsite for a per-mile fee, which is the easiest way to skip city driving entirely. Pickup is usually at the host's home with a 45-60 minute walkthrough covering driving, hookups and the dump process. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily allowances typically 100-150 miles and overage fees around $0.35-$0.50 per mile, so confirm before booking if you're planning a big loop.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Eatonville on RVezy, your payment is processed safely through the platform, so you never hand cash to a host or wire money. You pay the rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is authorized (held, not charged) on your card a few days before your trip. The deposit is separate from your booking payment and covers issues like excess mileage, late returns, or returning the RV with full waste tanks. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you received it, the hold is released after drop-off. Tip: take quick photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off to avoid any disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Eatonville during winter for snow trips to Mount Rainier?
Yes, and winter is a genuinely magical time for a Mount Rainier RV trip if you're prepared. Many Eatonville RV rental hosts list winter-ready rigs with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces and skirting suitable for the Nisqually-Paradise corridor, which stays open year-round (weather permitting) for snowshoeing, sledding at Paradise and stargazing. Look for listings that mention four-season use and shore-power capability, and message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness. Expect overnight lows in the 20s-30s and bring tire chains, Washington requires them in posted mountain zones. Rainbow RV Resort and Mounthaven Resort both offer winter hookups so you can plug into 30/50-amp power and stay toasty all night.
