Camping near Friday Harbor
Friday Harbor sits on San Juan Island in Washington's San Juan archipelago, reachable by Washington State Ferries from Anacortes or by small plane. The town is the main service hub for the islands, and most campgrounds within a short drive or a short ferry hop cater to tent, van, and small-to-mid-size RV travelers. Camping options span private resorts, state parks on neighboring islands, and a Parks Canada campground on North Pender Island across the international border.
On San Juan Island itself, Lakedale Resort sits roughly five miles north of the ferry landing and offers tent sites, glamping, and a limited number of hookup RV spots on lakes-and-forest acreage. Neighboring islands add more variety: Southend at Moran State Park and West Beach Resort on Orcas Island, Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island, and Prior Centennial in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve on North Pender Island in British Columbia.
RV travelers should plan dump logistics carefully. Public RV dump options on San Juan Island are very limited, so waste handling is best planned before boarding the ferry.
Things to do around Friday Harbor
The waters around San Juan Island are known for orca sightings, kayaking, and whale-watching tours departing from Friday Harbor. Cyclists ride the rolling farm roads between Roche Harbor and the south end of the island, and hikers head to San Juan Island National Historical Park for coastal trails at English Camp and American Camp.
A short ferry ride opens up more terrain. Moran State Park on Orcas Island covers more than 5,000 acres with several freshwater lakes, waterfalls, and Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juan Islands, topped by a stone observation tower. Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island is known for beachcombing, crabbing, and clamming on a sand spit that reaches toward Frost Island.
Families also use Lakedale Resort as a base for fishing, swimming, and paddling on its stocked lakes.

Summer is the operational peak. Lakedale Resort typically runs its campground through the warm season, with shoulder-season openings depending on weather. Prior Centennial in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve operates from May 15 through September 30 each year, in line with all Parks Canada frontcountry campgrounds in the reserve. Spencer Spit's standard campsites are commonly reservable from mid-May through mid-September.
Moran State Park is open year-round, but from October through March all campsites shift to first-come, first-served, with reduced services and possible water shutoffs in some campgrounds. Winter brings the wettest months and shorter park hours, but ferry travel is easier and sites are far less contested.
Burn bans are common in mid to late summer during dry spells, so check the park bulletin before lighting a campfire.
How to book
Washington state park campgrounds, including Southend at Moran State Park and Spencer Spit State Park, are reserved through the Washington State Parks system at washington.goingtocamp.com or by phone at (888) 226-7688. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the arrival date, and lakeside and beach sites at these parks fill quickly for summer weekends.
Prior Centennial and other Gulf Islands National Park Reserve sites are booked through the Parks Canada Reservation Service online or at 1-877-737-3783. Lakedale Resort and West Beach Resort take reservations directly through their own websites and front desks.
Book the Washington State Ferry sailing, and for cross-border trips to Pender Island the BC Ferries sailing to Otter Bay, well ahead of any summer stay.
What to expect
Campgrounds in the San Juan Islands generally lean rustic. Moran State Park has 124 standard sites plus six hiker/biker sites across four campgrounds, no electrical hookups, a maximum site length of 45 feet, one dump station near the western entrance, five restrooms, and ten showers. Spencer Spit has flush toilets but no showers, so plan to shower in Lopez Village or aboard the ferry. Prior Centennial is RV accessible with no services, set in a forest of cedar, fir, maple, and alder.
Lakedale is the most amenity-heavy option near Friday Harbor, with hot showers and a small number of water and electric RV sites. Cell reception is unreliable across much of the island interior.
Expect deer, foxes, and raccoons in most campgrounds, and store food inside vehicles overnight.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Friday Harbor, WA
How much does an RV rental in Friday Harbor typically cost?
An RV rental in Friday Harbor is more affordable than most visitors expect, especially when you split costs with a group. On RVezy, travel trailers near San Juan Island generally start around $95 to $160 per night, campervans run about $150 to $250, and larger Class C motorhomes are usually $200 to $350 per night, with peak summer rates landing at the higher end. To score a cheap RV rental in Friday Harbor, book in the shoulder seasons (April to May or late September to October), aim for 4+ night trips since many hosts discount weekly stays, and consider travel trailers since they tow easily off the ferry. Factor the Washington State Ferry vehicle fare into your budget, since RV size and length affect pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friday%20Harbor%2C%20WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Friday Harbor, WA?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Friday Harbor. Washington State does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, no matter the class. You'll generally need to be 25 or older, hold a valid license from any U.S. state, Canadian province, or your home country, and complete RVezy's ID verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. That's it: no test, no extra paperwork, just pick up the keys and head for the Anacortes ferry to start your San Juan Island RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my RV rental in Friday Harbor?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive onto the Washington State Ferry and explore San Juan Island knowing the big worries are handled. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the peace-of-mind tier that suits your trip. Coverage details, limits, and deductibles are outlined in the plan you select, and around-the-clock roadside support is just a call away whether you're on West Side Road or near Lime Kiln Point. Book your Friday Harbor RV rental with confidence and focus on the orcas instead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Friday Harbor RV booking?
Plans change, and RVezy is built for that. Every booking is backed by RVezy's standard cancellation policy (not set by individual hosts), which includes a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without stress. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host has to cancel, you'll receive a full refund or travel credit. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip to help, so reserve your Friday Harbor RV today and finalize details as your travel dates approach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Friday Harbor?
Absolutely, and your pup is going to love it. Filter by Pet-Friendly on RVezy to instantly see pet-friendly RV rental options in Friday Harbor, then message the host to confirm any deposit or cleaning details before booking. San Juan Island is wonderfully dog-welcoming: leashed dogs are allowed on most trails in San Juan Island National Historical Park (both American Camp and English Camp), at Lime Kiln Point State Park's whale-watching bluffs, and on the shoreline at South Beach. Lakedale Resort and San Juan County Park both welcome pets in their RV-friendly sites. Pro tip: bring a long lead so your dog can lounge with you while you scan the Haro Strait for orca pods passing offshore.
nps.gov/sajh/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or the ferry terminal?
Yes, and it's the smartest way to do Friday Harbor. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Friday Harbor straight to San Juan County Park, the San Juan County Fairgrounds, Lakedale Resort, or even the Friday Harbor ferry landing, so you skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig onto the Washington State Ferry. Your host arrives ahead of you, levels and sets up the RV, connects power and water if available, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see local hosts offering this service, and message them to confirm pricing (often a flat fee plus mileage). For first-timers, delivery turns a Friday Harbor RV trip into a true vacation from minute one.
sanjuancountywa.gov/473/RV-CampingHow far can I drive, and are there RV rentals with unlimited mileage near Friday Harbor?
You have plenty of options. Many hosts on RVezy offer generous daily mileage allowances (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is perfect since most of San Juan Island can be explored in a 50-mile loop. From downtown Friday Harbor, it's only about 10 miles to Roche Harbor, 9 miles to Lime Kiln Point (the famous whale-watching park), and 6 miles to American Camp on the island's south end. Each listing shows its mileage policy upfront, and any overage rate is clearly displayed. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer mainland adventure after the ferry back to Anacortes, filter for unlimited mileage hosts to keep your road trip wide open.
nps.gov/sajh/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere can I camp with an RV near Friday Harbor?
You have several excellent options for RV camping in Friday Harbor, all within 10 miles of the ferry terminal. San Juan County Park on West Side Road offers waterfront sites (no hookups; small RVs up to 25 feet only) with sunset views over Haro Strait and frequent orca sightings. San Juan County Fairgrounds, less than a mile from downtown, has 8 RV pedestals with 20/30 amp power and water at $50 per night, plus showers and restrooms. Lakedale Resort on Roche Harbor Road provides 5 lakeside RV sites with electric and water hookups across 82 acres. Snug Harbor Resort offers waterfront cabins and a few RV-friendly spots. Reserve at least 3 to 6 months ahead for summer; these are the best campgrounds near Friday Harbor and they fill fast.
sanjuancountywa.gov/473/RV-CampingWhen is the best time of year for a Friday Harbor RV trip?
Friday Harbor has one of the best summer climates in the United States, and the sweet spot runs from late May through September. Expect daytime highs of 65 to 75°F in summer with low humidity and minimal rain (the San Juans sit in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and get less than half the rainfall of Seattle). July and August are peak whale-watching months for resident orca pods off the west side. For fewer crowds and easier ferry reservations, target the shoulder weeks of mid-May, early June, or September, when temperatures still hover in the low 60s. Winter RV rental in Washington is possible too, with mild 40 to 50°F days, quiet trails, and incredible storm-watching from Lime Kiln Point.
weather.gov/sew/I've never rented an RV before. Is Friday Harbor a good first-timer destination?
It's one of the best in the Pacific Northwest for first-time renters. San Juan Island is just 55 square miles with low-traffic roads, posted speed limits of 25 to 45 mph, and only a handful of routes to learn, so you'll feel comfortable behind the wheel quickly. Every RVezy host provides an in-person walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, holding tanks, and the generator, and you can message your host anytime during your trip. To make your first time renting an RV even easier, choose a Class B campervan or smaller travel trailer, or book a host who offers delivery to your campground. Bonus: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking, so help is just a call away.
sanjuancountywa.gov/921/San-Juan-IslandWhat if something breaks down during my San Juan Island RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on West Side Road, a dead battery at South Beach, or a propane question at Lakedale Resort, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a great first resource since they know their rig inside out, and RVezy's customer support team is available around the clock through the app. Friday Harbor has auto and tire services in town, plus vehicle services near Roche Harbor on the north end, so parts and repairs are accessible. Save the roadside number to your phone before you board the Anacortes ferry and travel with total peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038404013-What-is-included-in-roadside-assistanceWhat are the best RV road trips from Friday Harbor?
Once you ferry back to Anacortes, the Pacific Northwest opens up beautifully. Top RV road trips from Friday Harbor include Deception Pass State Park (about 20 miles south of Anacortes, with dramatic bridge views and oceanfront camping), Mount Baker via the North Cascades Highway (about 90 miles east, alpine meadows and glacier vistas), Olympic National Park's Hurricane Ridge (around 110 miles via the Coupeville ferry, rainforests and mountain views), and Seattle (about 85 miles south, perfect for a city stop before heading home). Cross-border travel into British Columbia (Vancouver is roughly 90 miles north) may be allowed, so message your host first to confirm. Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Build in 3 to 5 extra days for an unforgettable loop.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/deception-pass-state-parkHow much should I budget for fuel during my Friday Harbor RV rental?
Fuel is one of the smallest line items on a San Juan Island trip, which is fantastic news. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), travel trailers being towed by a pickup return roughly 10 to 14 mpg, and campervans often hit 16 to 20 mpg. Since the entire island road network covers under 60 miles end to end, even a week of exploring rarely requires more than one tank. Washington gas prices typically run higher than the national average (recently around $4.30 to $4.70 per gallon), and Friday Harbor has two stations downtown plus one at Roche Harbor. Pro tip: fill up in Anacortes before boarding the ferry, where prices are usually 20 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Friday Harbor RV trip?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. For summer travel (June through August), reserve at San Juan County Park and San Juan County Fairgrounds the moment their reservation windows open, typically 6 months ahead, since these are the only public RV-friendly campgrounds on San Juan Island and they sell out within hours of opening. Lakedale Resort opens reservations roughly 12 months in advance for its 5 RV sites. Just as critical: book your Washington State Ferries vehicle reservation through wsdot.wa.gov as soon as the summer schedule opens (usually in April for June through September sailings). Shoulder season trips (May, September, October) are much easier and can often be planned 4 to 8 weeks ahead. Reserve the ferry and campground first, then book your RVezy rental.
sanjuancountywa.gov/2184/San-Juan-County-Park-CampgroundWhat are driving conditions like on San Juan Island?
Driving on San Juan Island is genuinely relaxing, which is why so many people love RV camping in Friday Harbor. Roads are paved two-lane country lanes with speed limits of 25 to 45 mph, very little traffic outside summer weekends, and gentle terrain (no mountain passes, no steep grades). Watch for deer, foxes, rabbits, and cyclists on West Side Road and Roche Harbor Road, especially at dawn and dusk. The biggest driving moment is loading and unloading the Washington State Ferry at Anacortes and Friday Harbor terminals; arrive 60 to 90 minutes early with your reservation, follow crew directions, and stay in low gear on the ramps. Most rigs under 30 feet handle the island and the ferry with ease.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/washington-state-ferries/rider-information/first-time-ridersWhat amenities will I find at Friday Harbor campgrounds?
Island camping has its own rhythm, and a little planning makes it seamless. The San Juan County Fairgrounds offers 20/30 amp electric and water hookups, restrooms, and hot showers, while Lakedale Resort provides electric and water plus bathhouses and lake access. San Juan County Park has flush toilets and potable water but no hookups and no showers (locals use the showers at Roche Harbor Marina or Friday Harbor port for a small fee). Important insider info: the Town of Friday Harbor's public RV dump station has been permanently closed, and there is no dump station anywhere on San Juan Island. Plan to dump and refill fresh water at the Anacortes terminal area before boarding the ferry, and your tanks will easily last a 4 to 5 day stay.
sanjuancountywa.gov/473/RV-CampingWhat's included inside a typical Friday Harbor RV rental?
You'll be pleasantly surprised at how stocked these rigs are. Most RVs on RVezy in the Friday Harbor area come fully equipped with a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds with linens (ask your host to confirm), a dinette, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class C motorhome rentals in Friday Harbor typically sleep 4 to 7 and include a generator for boondocking at San Juan County Park. Many campervan rentals in Friday Harbor add solar panels, a portable toilet, and outdoor shower for the off-grid west-side experience. Wifi and TV vary by rig, so check the listing's amenities list or message the host. Every listing photo on RVezy shows exactly what's inside before you book.
sanjuancountywa.gov/921/San-Juan-IslandWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
You can customize your motorhome rental in Friday Harbor to match your trip style. Popular add-ons offered by RVezy hosts include kitchen kits and dishware, bedding and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators, bike racks, kayak racks (a huge plus for San Juan Channel paddling), portable BBQs, and even pre-stocked pantries. Delivery and setup is the most-requested option in the San Juans since it eliminates ferry stress, typically priced as a flat fee plus mileage from the host's location. Pickup is usually from the host's home or a nearby meeting spot, with dropoff at the same location at a mutually agreed time. Each listing shows all add-ons with transparent pricing during checkout, so there are no surprises at pickup.
sanjuancountywa.gov/921/San-Juan-IslandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never exchange cash or cards directly with the host. When you book your RV rental in Washington, you'll pay the rental total (nightly rate, taxes, RVezy service fees, and any add-ons you select) by credit card through the secure RVezy checkout. A separate refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before your trip starts (the amount varies by listing and is shown clearly before you confirm). As long as the RV is returned in the agreed-upon condition, mileage, and fuel level, the hold is released after your trip. Take dated photos at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth and worry-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksDo I need a ferry reservation to bring my RV to Friday Harbor?
Yes, and this is the single most important booking tip for any San Juan Island RV trip. Washington State Ferries strongly recommends vehicle reservations on the Anacortes to Friday Harbor route, and in summer they are essentially required since sailings fill up months in advance. Reservations are free to make at wsdot.wa.gov/ferries and are based on your vehicle's length and height, so measure your RV before booking. Reservations release in tiers: about two months before the season, two weeks before, and two days before at 7:00 a.m., so set alarms if your first try sells out. Arrive at the Anacortes terminal 45 to 60 minutes before your sailing. Pro insider tip: eastbound inter-island sailings (Friday Harbor to Orcas or Lopez) are free, perfect for a day trip.
