Campgrounds and RV parks near Gorst, WA

Water access shapes most trips. During crabbing and oyster season the beach at Illahee is a spot for harvesting, fishing and crabbing can be done from the pier, and a recreational license is required for fishing and shellfish harvesting. Manchester State Park offers kayaking, boating, swimming, scuba diving, volleyball and horseshoes along its shoreline, plus wooded hiking trails through Douglas fir and maple. Trail riders and hikers head to the DNR forests. A trail system in Kitsap County on DNR-owned Green Mountain includes Wildcat Trail, which climbs 1,100 feet in 4.5 miles for views of Bremerton, Seattle, and on the right days Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams, with mixed use including motorized, hiker, and equestrian. Tahuya Adventure Resort connects to the broader Tahuya State Forest system, which offers about 84 miles of trails. History buffs can walk the preserved Coast Artillery structures at Manchester, including the 1901 brick torpedo warehouse and the mining casemate.

Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, when Puget Sound weather is at its driest and warmest. Scenic Beach State Park has 50 standard campsites available for reservation, with sites 1-25 available year-round and sites 26-50 closed for winter season from November 1 through March 31. Book well ahead for summer weekends, particularly at the Hood Canal parks. Shoulder seasons offer quieter camping with real trade-offs. At Manchester State Park, the reservation season runs April 1 through October 31. Outside that window, sites operate first-come, first-served. Rhododendron bloom typically peaks at Scenic Beach in May and June, and fall brings salmon activity to Hood Canal streams. DNR sites operate on a compressed season. Green Mountain Horse Camp offers access to trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and camping, but vehicle access is not available year-round, and camping is open on weekends only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with campsites accommodating up to a 25-foot trailer. Tahuya Adventure Resort operates year-round, so late-fall and winter RV trips typically fall back on the private resort or the year-round loops at Illahee and Scenic Beach.

Most Kitsap campgrounds are wooded rather than open, so expect shade, moss, and limited satellite reception. Manchester's campground is heavily wooded, which makes the sites more private although they are not far apart. Campsites at Illahee accommodate tents, campers and RVs depending on size, with a maximum campsite length of 40 feet with limited availability. Hookups are limited at the state parks. Manchester has 35 standard campsites, 15 partial-hookup sites that accommodate RVs up to 40 feet long, two marine trail sites and three first-come, first-served hiker/biker campsites. Scenic Beach has 50 standard campsites, two hiker/biker sites, one dump station, two restrooms and four showers, with eighteen pull-through sites accommodating 32-foot camping units and no hookups. Tahuya Adventure Resort is the go-to option for full hookups and larger rigs. Expect cool nights year-round, damp ground after rain, and some road noise at Illahee due to its proximity to Bremerton.
