Campgrounds near Ilwaco
Ilwaco sits at the southern tip of Washington's Long Beach Peninsula, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific. It functions as a working fishing port and a base for exploring the surrounding coast, with campgrounds clustered around the harbor, along the peninsula, and inside Cape Disappointment State Park, where camping is closed entirely until late spring 2026 while the park undergoes major renovations.
RV travelers have several options within a short drive of downtown. Beacon Charters and RV Park and Fisherman's Cove RV Park sit near the marina, Eagles Nest Resort is set back on North Head Road, and Dwell Seaview and Sou'wester Historic Lodge and Vintage Travel Trailer Resort are just up the peninsula in Seaview. Ilwaco campgrounds tend to offer more sheltered settings near the Columbia River and harbor, while options farther up the peninsula sit closer to the ocean beaches.
All Cape Disappointment camping loops are closed for renovations, with the park expecting to reopen camping in summer of 2026, so travelers planning a stay inside the state park should confirm current status before booking and treat the private RV parks listed above as the practical alternatives.
Things to do near Ilwaco
The main draws are the beaches and the two lighthouses at Cape Disappointment. The North Head Lighthouse, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Beard's Hollow remain open for day use throughout the construction project, so most of the park's headline attractions are still reachable even while camping is closed. The interpretive center sits on a cliff above the mouth of the Columbia and covers the explorers' journey to the Pacific.
The port supports charter fishing for salmon, tuna, and halibut in season, plus crabbing off the docks. Boaters bringing their own craft should note that the park boat launch will close intermittently throughout construction.
Families typically split time between beach walks, tidepooling at low tide, and short drives up the peninsula to Long Beach for the boardwalk, kite museum, and casual dining.

Summer is the most reliable window. July and August bring the driest, mildest conditions on the Long Beach Peninsula, with cool mornings, afternoon sea breezes, and frequent coastal fog. Most private campgrounds run at or near capacity from late June through Labor Day, so weekends should be booked well in advance.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with easier reservations and wetter, shorter days. Storm-watching picks up from late fall through winter, when Pacific systems push heavy rain and strong wind onto the peninsula. Winter is the wettest stretch of the year, and coastal wind advisories are common.
Winter camping is possible at private RV parks that stay open year-round, but travelers should plan for saturated ground, limited daylight, and the risk of storm-related closures. Swimming in the ocean on the Long Beach Peninsula is not advised in any season due to strong currents and cold water. Anyone counting on Cape Disappointment State Park for a stay should confirm the reopening timeline before travel.
How to book a campsite near Ilwaco
For Washington State Parks sites, the agency uses a central reservation system at washington.goingtocamp.com. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the first date of your trip, retreat centers up to one year in advance, and campsite reservations can be made until 2 p.m. on your arrival date. During the off season, which ends May 14, all camping at state parks is first come, first served.
Private parks in Ilwaco and Seaview, including Beacon Charters and RV Park, Fisherman's Cove RV Park, Eagles Nest Resort, Dwell Seaview, and Sou'wester Historic Lodge and Vintage Travel Trailer Resort, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first, especially sites with full hookups.
For peak-season stays, plan several months out. Cancellations do happen, so checking the reservation site frequently in the days before a trip can turn up last-minute openings.
What to expect
Ilwaco is a small port town, so expect a quiet, working-waterfront feel rather than resort infrastructure. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in town, with a larger selection in Long Beach a few miles north. Cell service varies across the peninsula and can drop off inside Cape Disappointment State Park, though signals generally improve in town and along the main highway.
Coastal conditions shape the experience. Wind, fog, and drizzle are common even in summer, and beach access usually involves a short walk over dunes rather than a drive-up. The parking lots at the North Head, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Beards Hollow will not accommodate RVs, so plan to park at the campground and drive a tow vehicle or walk to trailheads.
Pack layers, rain gear, and closed-toe shoes for rocky shoreline sections. Wildlife sightings including deer, elk, and shorebirds are common around the peninsula.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ilwaco, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ilwaco, WA?
An RV rental in Ilwaco is one of the more affordable ways to experience the southern Washington coast. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $140 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes ranging $150 to $250, and larger Class A motorhomes from $250 to $400 nightly. Shoulder season (April through early June and mid-September through October) is the sweet spot for a cheap RV rental Ilwaco travelers love, with rates often 20 to 30 percent lower than peak July and August. Pro tip: pair a Sunday-to-Thursday booking with a host who offers local delivery and you'll stretch your budget further while skipping the towing learning curve.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ilwaco%2C%20WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ilwaco, Washington?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ilwaco. The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for single vehicles rated over 26,001 pounds, which is well above virtually every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. You'll also need to be at least 25 years old and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. That's it, no RV-specific test, no endorsement, just you and the open Long Beach Peninsula.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlIs the RV and my trip protected if something goes wrong?
Peace of mind is built into every booking. Every RV rental in Ilwaco, WA through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're never on your own if a tire blows on Highway 101 or a slide-out acts up at Cape Disappointment. During checkout you'll choose your protection level based on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want, covering most accidental damages to the vehicle. Most renters find a mid-tier package is the sweet spot for a coastal Washington trip, letting you focus on chasing sunsets at North Head Lighthouse instead of worrying about what-ifs.

Booking is low-risk, so you can lock in that Long Beach Peninsula trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, giving you breathing room if plans shift. After that, the refund amount depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, with extra flexibility built in for major travel disruptions. You'll see the exact terms before you confirm payment. Pro tip: book early to snag the best rigs for Ilwaco's busy clam-digging weekends and the Washington State International Kite Festival in August, knowing you've got a safety net.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Ilwaco RV trip?
Yes, and your pup is going to love it. Ilwaco and the Long Beach Peninsula are famously dog-friendly, with 28 miles of drivable beach where leashed dogs are welcome to splash, sniff, and chase the surf. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental Ilwaco hosts list on RVezy to find rigs that welcome four-legged guests (some charge a small pet fee, which you'll see upfront). Cape Disappointment State Park allows leashed pets at campsites and on most trails, and the Discovery Trail between Ilwaco and Long Beach is a paw-pleaser. Pro tip: pack a towel for sandy paws and check out the dog-friendly patio at the Pickled Fish in Long Beach after your beach day.
parks.wa.gov/know-before-you-go/rules-regulations/pets-state-parksCan a host deliver the RV to my campground or rental home in Ilwaco?
Yes, and RV delivery Ilwaco is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts on the Long Beach Peninsula offer to drop your travel trailer or motorhome directly at campgrounds like Cape Disappointment State Park or local RV parks, or even a private beach house driveway. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave, so you can skip the towing and setup entirely. Use the Delivery filter when you search, and message the host with your campsite number. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you're flying into Portland International Airport (PDX) and renting a car for the roughly 2-hour drive to Ilwaco.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/cape-disappointment-state-parkHow far can I drive on a typical Ilwaco RV rental, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most RVezy hosts in the Ilwaco area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at around $0.35 to $0.50 each, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. That's more than enough for most Long Beach Peninsula adventures: it's just a few miles to Cape Disappointment, about 7 miles north to Long Beach, roughly 14 miles across the Astoria-Megler Bridge to Astoria, Oregon, and around 25 miles to Leadbetter Point State Park. Going farther? Mount Rainier is about 200 miles east and Olympic National Park around 180 miles north. Pro tip: estimate your route before booking and message the host for a custom mileage package if needed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ilwaco%2C%20WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Ilwaco to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The crown jewel is Cape Disappointment State Park, with full-hookup, partial-hookup, and standard sites plus yurts, all set between Pacific beaches and old-growth forest (check the park's website before booking, as portions of the campground undergo periodic renovation closures). Other Long Beach Peninsula options include private RV parks near Ilwaco's marina and downtown, several with full hookups and easy big-rig access. For RV camping Ilwaco beyond the basics, head about 15 miles south across the Astoria-Megler Bridge to Fort Stevens State Park in Oregon for forest sites and beach access to the Peter Iredale shipwreck.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/cape-disappointment-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an Ilwaco RV trip?
July through September is the sweet spot. Ilwaco sits in a cool maritime climate, so summer highs average a comfortable 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit with the lowest rainfall of the year. That's perfect kite-flying, clam-digging, and lighthouse-hiking weather. May, June, and October are shoulder-season gems with fewer crowds and lower rates, though you'll want rain gear. Winter rentals are absolutely available and increasingly popular for storm-watching: December and January bring dramatic Pacific swells and pounding surf, with average highs in the upper 40s. Pro tip: time your visit for the Washington State International Kite Festival in late August, an Ilwaco-area tradition that fills the Long Beach sky with color.
weather.gov/sew/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Ilwaco?
You're going to be just fine, and Ilwaco is a great spot for first time renting an RV. The roads here are quiet, mostly flat coastal highways with low traffic outside of summer weekends, and Cape Disappointment is only a few miles from town. Every RVezy host gives you a detailed walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and the dump procedure, plus their phone number for any questions mid-trip. Want to skip driving altogether? Choose a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet), they handle like a large van and fit easily in any Long Beach Peninsula campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I get a flat tire or breakdown during my trip?
Take a breath: help is one phone call away, 24/7. Every RVezy booking includes round-the-clock roadside assistance as part of your protection plan, covering tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. You'll also have your host's direct number for quick questions about anything specific to their rig. Cell coverage on the Long Beach Peninsula is generally solid on major carriers near Ilwaco and Long Beach, though it can fade inside Cape Disappointment State Park's wooded loops. Pro tip: save RVezy's support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the rig's VIN and tire pressure sticker in case you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trips can I take from Ilwaco in my RV rental?
Ilwaco is a launch pad for some incredible Pacific Northwest routes. A classic RV road trip from Ilwaco heads south across the Astoria-Megler Bridge (about 14 miles) to Astoria and the Oregon Coast, with Cannon Beach about 40 miles south and Tillamook another 55. Drive north up the peninsula to Long Beach (around 7 miles) and Leadbetter Point State Park (about 25 miles) for migratory bird watching. Head inland roughly 180 miles to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, or about 200 miles to Mount Rainier National Park. Cross-border travel to Canada is allowed on RVezy rentals if you coordinate with your host in advance; travel to Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: shopping in Astoria is sales-tax-free, a nice bonus stop on the Oregon Coast leg.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Ilwaco RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, so here's the realistic picture. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A's pull 6 to 8 MPG, campervans (Class B) do a friendly 14 to 18 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer comes in around 10 to 12 MPG. Washington gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so a 200-mile loop around the peninsula and Astoria might cost roughly $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: cross the bridge to Warrenton, Oregon to fill up, prices are often noticeably cheaper just over the state line.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ilwaco?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. Cape Disappointment State Park is one of Washington's most popular coastal campgrounds, and reservations open 9 months in advance through the official Washington State Parks reservation system. For July and August stays, book the day the window opens. Private RV parks around Ilwaco typically need 1 to 3 months of lead time in summer and a week or two in shoulder season. Winter and weekday stays are usually wide open. Pro tip: if your dates are full at Cape Disappointment, check Fort Stevens State Park across the bridge in Oregon (also a 9-month booking window via Oregon State Parks) or look into cancellation alert tools that ping you when sites open up.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are driving conditions like around Ilwaco?
Driving around Ilwaco is refreshingly mellow compared to most of western Washington. US Route 101 and State Route 103 are the main arteries, both two-lane highways with gentle curves and few hills on the peninsula itself. The big consideration is weather: expect frequent rain, fog, and gusty crosswinds along the coast, especially on the Astoria-Megler Bridge (a roughly 4-mile span where high-profile vehicles should reduce speed in strong winds). Watch for elk near Naselle, deer at dawn and dusk, and beach traffic during summer weekends. Pro tip: although the Long Beach Peninsula allows vehicles on certain stretches of beach, RVs should stick to paved roads, soft sand is a tow truck waiting to happen.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ilwaco?
Coastal campgrounds here come well-equipped. Cape Disappointment State Park offers full-hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), partial-hookup sites, plus an on-site dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. Private RV parks on the peninsula typically provide full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service and Wi-Fi (signal varies). Most peninsula parks have potable water fill stations and dump stations on-site, and there's a public dump near the Port of Ilwaco. Pro tip: cell signal can drop inside Cape Disappointment's wooded loops, so download offline maps and Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center info before you arrive. A Washington Discover Pass is required for day-use state park access.
parks.wa.gov/passes-permits/discover-passWhat will I find inside the RV I rent in Ilwaco?
RVezy rentals in Ilwaco come ready to roll, you really just need to bring clothes, food, and your favorite beach chair. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel days. Many listings include a TV, some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard entertainment, and larger motorhomes often have a generator for boondocking. Campervan rental Ilwaco options are great for couples and small groups, while a Class C motorhome rental Ilwaco hosts list suits families well. Pro tip: check the listing's photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host to confirm specifics like a backup camera or outdoor shower (perfect after a Pacific Ocean dip).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ilwaco%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and options do hosts offer for Ilwaco RV rentals?
Hosts in the Ilwaco area love making your trip easier with smart add-ons. Common extras you'll see on RVezy listings include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor tables, generators, bikes, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for Black Lake or Baker Bay), portable BBQs, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer dump and refill service at trip end so you can hand back the keys and go. Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near Ilwaco, Seaview, or Long Beach, with delivery available for a per-mile fee. Pro tip: ask about a clam-digging kit during winter and spring tides, it's a quintessential Long Beach Peninsula experience.
wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing/razor-clamsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host with cash or off-platform transfers), which keeps your transaction protected. A refundable security deposit is held on your card or payment method before your trip starts, with the amount varying depending on the RV's value and your chosen protection level. As long as you return the rig in the same condition you got it, with the agreed fuel and mileage, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup and dropoff, take photos of the odometer and fuel gauge, and you'll keep your motorhome rental Ilwaco experience smooth and dispute-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping around Ilwaco actually doable?
Yes, and storm-watching season is a hidden gem. Ilwaco's winters are wet but mild, with average highs in the mid-40s Fahrenheit and lows rarely dropping below freezing thanks to the Pacific influence. Cape Disappointment State Park typically keeps key services available through winter, and many private parks like those along the peninsula stay open year-round. Look for an RV with heated holding tanks, a furnace, and electric shore power if you're booking December through February, and message your host to confirm cold-weather readiness. Pro tip: huge winter swells crash into the North Jetty and below North Head Lighthouse from November through February, making this one of the best storm-watching spots on the West Coast, just stay well back from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.
