Campgrounds near McKenna, Washington
McKenna is an unincorporated community in Pierce County along the Nisqually River in southwest Washington, sitting roughly halfway between Olympia and the Nisqually entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The area works well as an RV base because it sits at low elevation with easy highway access, yet puts campers within reach of Mount Rainier, the Cascades, Puget Sound, and the state capital.
Camping options near town are a mix of private RV resorts, state parks, and national-park and national-forest campgrounds farther east. Closest to McKenna, Riverbend Campground and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground offer lake and river settings, while WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center, Rainbow RV Resort, and Offut Lake Resort provide full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs.
Most campgrounds within about 30 miles of town sit at low elevations in the Puget lowlands, which keeps overnight temperatures moderate through most of the camping season and helps parks stay accessible outside deep winter.
Things to do near McKenna
Mount Rainier National Park is the headline trip from McKenna. The park is dominated by a glacier-clad volcano peaking at 14,411 feet, and visitors travel through old-growth forest, past waterfalls, and up to sub-alpine meadows where wildflower displays bloom through July and August. The Nisqually entrance near Ashford is the closest gate.
Closer to town, the Nisqually River corridor supports fishing, paddling, and short hikes. Lake-based campgrounds such as Offut Lake Resort and Henleys Silver Lake Resort Campground add swimming, boat rentals, and shoreline fishing. Millersylvania State Park, about half an hour toward Olympia, has forested trails and swimming on Deep Lake.
Families using McKenna as a base can also reach Olympia and Tacoma museums within an hour, and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument on a longer day trip south.

Summer, from late June through early September, is peak season. Skies are drier, mountain roads are clear of snow, and demand is high. The camping season inside Mount Rainier National Park generally runs from late May to early October depending on snow conditions, and popular sites at both park and state park campgrounds fill weeks or months ahead for weekends.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons. Lowland parks near McKenna stay open, but campers should expect wet weather, cool nights, and lingering snow at higher elevations. Fall brings the wettest stretch of the year in the western lowlands, with November and December typically the rainiest months.
Winter camping is limited. Mount Rainier winters are snowy, front-country camping opportunities are extremely limited, and all drive-in park campgrounds are closed with deep snow covering campgrounds like Cougar Rock until spring. Private RV parks around McKenna generally stay open year-round for travelers who want a heated rig and hookups during the wet season.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

How to book campgrounds near McKenna
Different campgrounds use different reservation systems, so plan by operator. National park and national forest sites, including Cougar Rock at Mount Rainier, are booked through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, with new arrival dates released daily. White River Campground is first-come, first-served only, and payment is handled through the Recreation.gov mobile app using Scan and Pay, so download the app before arriving since there is no cell service on site.
Washington State Parks, including Millersylvania near McKenna, use a separate system at washington.goingtocamp.com. Campsite reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the first date of the trip, and same-day online bookings are accepted until 2 p.m. on the arrival date.
Private RV parks such as WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center, Rainbow RV Resort, and Offut Lake Resort take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect
Private RV parks close to McKenna generally offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service, showers, laundry, and reliable cell coverage. Sites lean toward level gravel or paved pads, and many parks allow pets and extended stays. Lakeside resorts add boat launches, swim areas, and rentals.
Inside Mount Rainier National Park, expectations shift. No park campground at Mount Rainier offers hookups, dump stations, or pull-through sites, and the Cougar Rock RV dump and fill station is closed. Turns on loop roads are tight and vehicle damage can occur, with a maximum motorhome length of 35 feet and trailer length of 27 feet at Cougar Rock.
Cell service is patchy in the foothills and largely absent inside the national park, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town. Proper food storage is required at forested campgrounds in the region.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near McKenna, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in McKenna, WA?
RV rental in McKenna is more affordable than you might think, with most listings ranging from about $95 to $175 per night for travel trailers and $175 to $325 per night for Class C motorhomes. Larger Class A coaches and luxury fifth wheels run higher, while compact campervans tend to be the cheapest RV rental in McKenna for couples or solo travelers. Prices peak from late June through Labor Day when Mount Rainier traffic surges, so booking a shoulder-season trip in May or late September can save you 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message a few hosts in nearby Yelm, Roy, or Spanaway to compare delivery fees and weekly discounts before locking in your dates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McKenna%2C%20WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in McKenna?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in McKenna. Washington State does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every motorhome and trailer on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified quickly during the booking process so you can focus on planning the fun stuff. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters in the McKenna area are surprised how simple the paperwork actually is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in McKenna booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit State Route 507 with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV, and you choose your preferred coverage tier during checkout. That means flexibility to pick the peace of mind that fits your trip, whether you're heading about 45 miles east to Mount Rainier National Park or making a longer loop through the Olympic Peninsula. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers at checkout, many renters heading toward Mount Rainier opt for a higher tier given the mountain roads.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my McKenna RV trip?
You can book with confidence. RVezy has a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy that includes a full money-back grace period right after booking, so you're not locked in the moment you click confirm. After that window, the refund amount depends on how far you are from your trip start date. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules on RVezy, the policy is consistent across every listing, so there's no fine print to compare. If a host has to cancel on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best motorhome rental McKenna has available, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to finalize plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from McKenna?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in McKenna is easy to find, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many hosts in the Yelm, Roy, and Spanaway area love pets and even leave bowls or beds in the RV. Once you're on the road, your pup will have plenty to explore: leashed dogs are welcome at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park's walking paths, on the Yelm-Tenino Trail, and at most loops in Millersylvania State Park about 25 minutes southwest. Pro tip: Mount Rainier National Park restricts dogs to parking lots, paved roads, and campgrounds, so pair your park visit with stops at pet-friendly Gifford Pinchot National Forest trails instead.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home?
Yes, RV delivery in McKenna is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig to your driveway, a nearby campground, or directly to Cougar Rock Campground inside Mount Rainier National Park. They'll level it, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, with some offering free delivery within a set radius of McKenna. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts to ask about flat-rate delivery to popular spots like Ohanapecosh or Ike Kinswa State Park.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmHow many miles can I drive on my McKenna RV rental?
You'll have plenty of room to roam. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loop trips. From McKenna, real driving distances are very manageable: Mount Rainier's Nisqually Entrance is about 45 miles east, Olympia is roughly 20 miles southwest, Seattle is about 60 miles north, Mount St. Helens is roughly 90 miles south, and the Pacific coast at Westport sits about 90 miles west. A four-day loop through Rainier and back rarely tops 250 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger Washington RV trip, message the host before booking, many will bundle extra miles for stays of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McKenna%2C%20WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near McKenna?

Cougar Rock Campground inside Mount Rainier National Park has around 173 sites and is ideal for park exploration. Ohanapecosh Campground sits on the southeast corner of Rainier with riverside spots among ancient cedars. Ike Kinswa State Park on Mayfield Lake (about an hour south) has full-hookup sites and a swimming beach. Alder Lake Park, run by Tacoma Power, offers waterfront RV sites about 30 minutes east of McKenna. Pro tip: Washington State Parks releases reservations nine months in advance, so book your summer Rainier-area trip the moment that window opens.
washington.goingtocamp.com/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from McKenna?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for an RV trip from McKenna, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 70s to low 80s and Mount Rainier's wildflower meadows at Paradise hit peak bloom in late July and early August. Spring (April to early June) is wetter but gorgeous, with daffodils blooming across Pierce County and lighter crowds. Fall brings golden vine maples and crisp 50 to 65 degree days through October, perfect shoulder-season RV camping in McKenna. Winters here are mild but very wet, with temperatures usually in the high 30s to mid 40s. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of September for the best combo of open campgrounds, fall color, and lower rental rates.
weather.gov/sew/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is genuinely fun once you've had your walkthrough. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and backup camera before you leave. McKenna is a perfect launching pad for new RVers because State Route 507 and nearby Highway 510 are flat, lightly trafficked rural roads, ideal for getting comfortable behind the wheel before you tackle the curvier sections of SR 706 heading into Mount Rainier. You can also message your host during the trip with any questions, and RVezy support is available 24/7. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they handle a lot like a large van.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/highway-traffic/safe-drivingWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire near Elbe or a battery issue at Paradise is just a phone call away. From McKenna, most service providers based in Tacoma, Olympia, or Puyallup can reach you quickly. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, hosts often know the quickest local fix, especially for quirks specific to their RV. Cell coverage is solid along SR 507 and I-5, though it gets patchy deep inside Mount Rainier National Park, so download offline maps before you head up. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my McKenna RV rental to Oregon or Canada?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate travel. An RV road trip from McKenna down through Oregon to Crater Lake (about 6.5 hours) or up to the San Juan Islands is totally doable. Cross-border travel to Canada (Vancouver is roughly 3 hours north) depends on the host and protection plan, so message them through the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state loops include McKenna to the Oregon Coast via US-101, McKenna to Crater Lake and Bend, and McKenna up to North Cascades National Park. Pro tip: bring your passport for any Canada trip and share your full itinerary with your host so they can confirm coverage before departure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my RV trip from McKenna?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward: most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans average 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailer mileage depends on your tow vehicle. Washington gas prices typically run higher than the national average. A 250-mile loop to Mount Rainier and back in a Class C will burn roughly 25 gallons. The closest fuel stops are in Yelm (just across the Nisqually River), Roy, and Spanaway. Pro tip: fill up before heading into Mount Rainier National Park, gas inside Ashford and Packwood is consistently more expensive per gallon than McKenna-area stations.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For summer weekends near McKenna, book your campground 6 to 9 months ahead, the popular spots fill fast. Mount Rainier National Park campgrounds (Cougar Rock, Ohanapecosh, White River) open reservations on Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, and Paradise-area access can vanish within minutes of release. Washington State Parks like Millersylvania and Ike Kinswa open bookings nine months in advance through the state parks reservation site. For shoulder season (April, May, late September, October), 4 to 6 weeks ahead is usually enough. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for 7 a.m. Pacific on your booking-window opening day and have two backup site numbers ready.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the local driving conditions like around McKenna?
Driving around McKenna is refreshingly mellow. State Route 507 is a flat, two-lane rural highway with light traffic and easy access to I-5 (about 15 minutes west). The real adventure starts when you head east toward Mount Rainier on SR 7 and SR 706, where you'll climb steady grades, hit some tight curves, and may share the road with logging trucks. From roughly November through April, the road from Longmire to Paradise often requires tire chains for RVs, and the National Park Service enforces this. Watch for elk crossings near Pack Forest at dusk. Pro tip: check WSDOT's mountain pass conditions before any October-to-May trip toward Rainier or Chinook Pass, and avoid I-5 through Tacoma between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpassesWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near McKenna?
Campgrounds near McKenna range from rustic forest sites to full-hookup RV parks, so you've got flexibility. Millersylvania State Park has utility sites with water and 30-amp electric, modern restrooms, and showers. Ike Kinswa State Park offers full-hookup sites including sewer. Inside Mount Rainier National Park, campgrounds are dry camping only (no hookups), but they have potable water spigots, flush toilets, and dump stations at Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh. For dumping and filling tanks closer to McKenna, Alder Lake Park has a convenient dump station. Pro tip: many national park campsites accommodate RVs up to around 27 feet, double-check your rental length before booking Mount Rainier sites or plan for Alder Lake or Cougar Rock's larger loops instead.
nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/cougar-rock-campground.htmWhat's included inside the RV itself?
Your McKenna RV rental comes ready to camp, and every listing on RVezy clearly shows what's inside. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in most Class B, C, and larger trailers); comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size; heating and air conditioning; and seatbelted seating for travel. Many McKenna-area hosts also include outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, leveling blocks, and a stocked kitchen with utensils and a coffee maker. Generators, solar panels, and onboard Wi-Fi or cell boosters are common add-ons, especially handy because cell signal fades inside Mount Rainier National Park. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and message the host to confirm linens and towels are included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McKenna%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Most McKenna hosts offer helpful add-ons that make the trip easier: generator use, propane refills, bike racks, kayak racks, portable Wi-Fi hotspots, and full-tank prep packages so you can return the RV without scrambling at the dump station. Pickup is typically from the host's driveway in McKenna, Yelm, Roy, or nearby Pierce and Thurston County towns, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts welcome festival and event travel, including trips to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. Mileage policies usually allow 100 to 150 miles per night with extra miles available for purchase. Pro tip: ask about late-return grace periods, many hosts allow a 1 to 2 hour buffer for free if you message ahead.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McKenna%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and fully online, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and your funds are handled securely. Hosts never collect your payment directly, which protects both sides. A security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged, and released after return if there's no damage or missing equipment. To avoid issues, do a thorough pre-trip walkaround with your host and take photos or video of the RV's condition. Pro tip: return the RV with the tanks dumped, fuel topped off, and the interior tidy, this is the single biggest factor in getting your full deposit back fast on your McKenna RV rental.
