Campgrounds and RV parks near Montesano, WA

Fishing is a primary draw across the area. The Satsop River at Schafer State Park supports steelhead in late winter, sea-run cutthroat trout in summer, and salmon in fall, and the Chehalis River frontage at Friends Landing RV Park has a fishing dock and boat launch. Lake Sylvia State Park offers a fishing dock, shoreline access, and a swim area. Hikers and cyclists can use the trail network at Lake Sylvia State Park, which connects to Montesano city forest trails for longer routes. Friends Landing RV Park has a paved accessible loop around Lake Quigg suitable for strollers, bikes, and wheelchairs. The coast at Ocean Shores, Westport, and the Quinault rainforest are all reachable as day trips, making Montesano a workable hub for wider Olympic Peninsula touring.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through early fall. Lake Sylvia State Park is open year-round, with individual campsites reservable April 1 through September 30 and first-come, first-served camping the rest of the year on a reduced winter schedule. Schafer State Park operates its full campground primarily from spring into fall, with the newer East Campground offering more spacious, well-separated sites and updated bathhouses. Summer brings the driest weather and the highest demand. Lakeside and riverside sites at the state parks fill quickly on weekends, especially around holidays, and early booking is essential for premium spots. Late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, fewer crowds, and good fishing windows on the Satsop and Chehalis. Winter is wet. Rain is heavy from November through February, river levels can rise quickly, and some campground amenities scale back. Year-round commercial parks such as Elma RV Park and Hoquiam River RV Park remain useful options in the off-season.

Sites at the state parks lean rustic. Lake Sylvia State Park has 31 standard sites, 4 partial-hookup sites, 4 walk-in sites, and 2 hiker/biker sites, plus a dump station, restrooms, and showers; maximum site length is 30 feet with limited availability, so longer rigs should confirm a fit. Schafer State Park provides standard sites plus partial-hookup utility sites with water and power, a dump station, and showers, with maximum site length around 40 feet. Friends Landing RV Park offers full-hookup RV sites and a separate tent area, with paved pads and accessible facilities. Cell coverage is reasonable near town but can thin out at the more wooded sites. Expect cool, damp mornings even in summer, shaded sites under dense forest canopy, and mosquitoes near still water. Pack layers, rain gear, and waterproof footwear.
