Camping near Oakville, Washington
Oakville sits in southwest Thurston and northern Grays Harbor county between the Chehalis River and the foothills of Capitol State Forest. The town is rural, surrounded by farmland and second-growth Douglas-fir forest, and gives RV travelers quick access to Interstate 5 via US-12 and the coastal beaches at Westport and Ocean Shores roughly an hour west.
Campground options near Oakville split into two distinct categories. Chehalis Tribe's Lucky Eagle RV Park and the related Lucky Eagle RV and Hotel, both operated by the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation, offer RV sites with water and electric hookups close to the casino. For more rustic stays, the Washington Department of Natural Resources operates Porter Creek and Fall Creek campgrounds inside the 110,000-acre Capitol State Forest just to the north.
Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve, also managed by DNR, lies a short drive northeast and is a popular day-stop for families exploring the area's unusual prairie landforms.
Things to do near Oakville
Capitol State Forest is the main draw, with about 150 miles of trail open to hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and off-road vehicles. Porter Creek - Department of Natural Resources serves as a primary gateway to the forest's motorized trail network and the trailhead for the short out-and-back hike to Porter Falls, a popular route with families.
Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve protects an unusual field of dome-shaped prairie mounds designated a National Natural Landmark in 1966. A paved half-mile ADA-accessible loop and longer gravel paths circle the mounds, and the interpretive shelter explains the competing theories of how they formed. Dogs are not permitted at Mima Mounds, with service animals as the only exception.
The Chehalis River runs through Oakville and offers fishing for salmon and steelhead in season.

The DNR campgrounds inside Capitol State Forest, including Porter Creek and Fall Creek, operate seasonally from May 1 through November on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers must self-register on arrival and the stay limit is seven days total within any 365-day period. Capitol State Forest is also subject to seasonal closures tied to weather and fire conditions, so check DNR alerts before heading out.
Late spring through early fall is the most reliable window. April and May bring peak wildflower bloom at Mima Mounds, with Prairie Appreciation Day held on the second Saturday in May. June through August is the driest stretch and the best time for ORV trails, mountain biking, and hiking to creekside spots like Porter Falls.
Winter visits remain possible at the Lucky Eagle properties, which stay open year-round, but expect heavy rain, muddy trails, and limited access inside Capitol State Forest.

Really great RV that was easy to drive and worked really well. Lots of space with the pop out, AC blows cold and the heating is warm. Was very comfortable the whole time. Steve the host is great and took the time to show me how everything worked in detail and had me completely comfortable to go on my trip. Can’t recommend this rental enough. Thank you.

Don and his wife were great hosts! The RV was in great condition, ran well, and they were both easy to communicate with. We were happy to see they even provided amenities such as kitchen appliances, plates, utensils, chairs and a BBQ. We would definitely go through them on our next trip if the RV is available!
Taylor M. - Aug 2025
The Leggs were really great and we appreciated the supplies that were included. There were camp chairs and even an outdoor grill.

How to book a campground near Oakville
Chehalis Tribe's Lucky Eagle RV Park and Lucky Eagle RV and Hotel are booked directly through Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, which is owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation. Sites include water and electric hookups with 30 and 50 amp service. The properties stay open year-round and accept self-contained RVs.
Porter Creek - Department of Natural Resources and Fall Creek - Department of Natural Resources do not take reservations. Sites are first-come, first-served, so arrive early on summer weekends and holidays when the small primitive campgrounds tend to fill. A Washington Discover Pass is required to park at DNR trailheads and at Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve.
What to expect
Expect two very different camping styles in the Oakville area. The Lucky Eagle properties are flat, full-hookup-style RV parks built for casino visitors and travelers passing through on I-5 and US-12, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Service is straightforward and the setting is functional rather than scenic.
Porter Creek and Fall Creek are rustic DNR campgrounds inside Capitol State Forest. Facilities are limited to vault toilets and self-register kiosks, with no drinking water and no hookups. Sites at Porter Creek sit alongside the creek, and the area is popular with ATV and motorcycle riders, so weekends can be loud.
Cell service is patchy once inside the forest. Pack in water, plan for rain even in summer, and check DNR for current burn bans before lighting a campfire.

weather.gov/sew/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You will be just fine, first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, generator, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, and many send a personal video or PDF guide ahead of your trip too. You can message the host any time from the listing page, before and during your trip, with questions about backing in at a tight Rainbow Falls campsite or running the furnace on a cool Oakville evening. If you would rather skip driving, book a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer or Class C in the 22 to 26 foot range, they are easy to maneuver on Highway 12.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003360234-For-rentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Oakville RV trip?
You are not on your own, 24/7 roadside assistance comes standard with every Oakville RV rental booked through RVezy. Whether you have a flat tire on Highway 12, a dead battery at a Capitol State Forest pullout, or a tow need outside Aberdeen, one call dispatches help. Your host is also a direct line, message them through the app and they can troubleshoot quirks specific to their RV, like a finicky water pump or generator start sequence. RVezy support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of your RV's license plate and VIN so you have them ready if needed.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Oakville RV rental into Canada or Oregon?
Cross-state trips into Oregon are typically straightforward. Portland is just 110 miles south of Oakville on I-5 and a popular extension of any RV road trip from Oakville. Canada trips into British Columbia are sometimes allowed but depend on the individual host's approval and insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. For domestic loops, hosts often welcome trips to the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, or Redwood National Park in northern California. Confirm the route with your host so mileage and protection coverage are clear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my Oakville RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget. Most Class C motorhomes around Oakville average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers being towed return about 10 to 14 mpg depending on the tow vehicle, and campervans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Washington gas prices typically run above the national average, so figure roughly $4 to $5 per gallon when budgeting. A 300-mile loop from Oakville to Olympic National Park and back in a Class C might use about 30 gallons, around $130 to $150 in fuel. Fill up in Centralia or Olympia where prices are usually lower than at coastal stations near Ocean Shores.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakville?
For summer weekends, book Washington State Parks campgrounds 9 months in advance, that's when the reservation window opens on the official Washington State Parks reservation site. Rainbow Falls, Schafer, Lake Sylvia, and Millersylvania all fill quickly from late June through Labor Day. Mid-week trips and shoulder-season dates are far easier, often available just a week or two out. Private parks like Outback RV Park in Oakville and American Heritage Campground take reservations year-round and are great backups. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 9 months before your target weekend, log in right at 7 a.m. Pacific time, and you'll snag the best riverfront sites. Last-minute traveler? Check for cancellations 48 hours out.
parks.wa.gov/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Oakville?
Driving an RV around Oakville is genuinely relaxed, Highway 12 through town is a wide two-lane state highway with gentle terrain, and I-5 (about 20 miles east) is flat and straightforward. The main thing to watch is wet pavement, the Chehalis Valley gets around 52 inches of rain annually, so allow extra braking distance October through April. Coastal winds can pick up between Aberdeen and Ocean Shores, take it slow with high-profile RVs. If you're heading up to Mount Rainier, the climb to Paradise involves steeper grades and tight curves, downshift and take your time. Watch for elk crossings on Highway 12 east of town at dawn and dusk, especially near the Chehalis River bottoms.
