The rivers drive most recreation. Boating, bank fishing, and paddling are popular on the Columbia and Snake, and Sacajawea Historical State Park offers a swim beach, boat launch, picnic shelters, and the Sacajawea Interpretive Center, which covers the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Sahaptian-speaking tribes of the region. The paved Sacagawea Heritage Trail links the three Tri-Cities along the riverfront and is well suited to family bike rides. North of Richland, Hanford Reach National Monument protects the only non-tidal, free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River, with hiking on undeveloped paths near the White Bluffs Boat Launch and wildlife viewing for mule deer, elk, bald eagles, pelicans, and herons. The REACH Museum in Richland covers the Manhattan Project, Ice Age floods, and regional Native history. Wineries in the surrounding Yakima Valley and Walla Walla Valley round out a weekend.

Pasco has a semi-arid climate with short, hot, dry summers and cold, relatively dry winters. Summer highs commonly reach the low-to-mid 90s Fahrenheit, July is the driest month, and there is very little shade in the surrounding shrub-steppe. Shoulder seasons are the most comfortable: spring brings wildflower displays across the Hanford Reach, and fall delivers clear, mild days well into October. Sacajawea Historical State Park is a day-use park open 8 a.m. to dusk from April 1 through October 31 and closed November 1 through March 31. The Interpretive Center keeps shorter hours, generally Wednesday through Sunday in season, and closes for the winter. Hanford Reach is open year round from sunrise to sunset, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends spring and fall for hiking the White Bluffs because trails are undeveloped and there is no shade in the summer heat. Winter cold snaps can push lows well below freezing during Arctic outbreaks, so cold-weather hookups and skirting matter for shoulder-season stays.

Expect a dry, open landscape with limited natural shade. Most Tri-Cities RV parks are level, big-rig friendly, and built around full hookups, paved interior roads, and pull-through sites. Summer afternoons get hot, so awnings, shade screens, and extra drinking water are worth packing. Wind is a regular feature in the Columbia Basin, especially in winter and spring, so chock wheels and stow loose gear. Cell coverage is solid in town and along the interstate but drops off inside Hanford Reach Monument, where roads and trails are largely undeveloped and visitors are expected to be self-sufficient. Wildlife is abundant near the rivers: mule deer, coyotes, pelicans, herons, and bald eagles are common sightings.
