Campgrounds near Puget Island
Puget Island sits in the Columbia River in Wahkiakum County, Washington, connected to Cathlamet by the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge on State Route 409. The island covers roughly 7.5 square miles of farmland, sloughs, and waterfront, with the last regularly scheduled car ferry on the lower Columbia linking its south shore to Westport, Oregon.
Most RV camping is clustered on the Washington side around Skamokawa and Cathlamet, with additional options across the river in Oregon. The closest full-service public campground is Skamokawa Vista Park, a 75-acre county-port park directly on the Columbia. Inland and across the river, options include Clatskanie River Inn and RV Park, RV Outdoor adventures and Cabins, and the more rustic Clatsop State Forest - Northrup Creek Horse Camp and Tunerville - Department of Natural Resources site.
The area is rural and quiet. Expect narrow island roads, working farms, sloughs frequented by Columbian white-tailed deer, and constant ship traffic on the main shipping channel south of the island.
Things to do near Puget Island
The island itself is built for slow exploration. Flat county roads make it a popular spot for cycling, with farmland, sloughs, and Columbia River views along the way. The Julia Butler Hansen Refuge protects endangered Columbian white-tailed deer, and bald eagles, hawks, and seals are commonly seen from the shoreline.
Water activities dominate. Paddlers launch from Skamokawa Vista Park and the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet to reach quiet backwaters inside Brooks and Steamboat Slough, plus Coffee Pot Island just offshore from the park district's Svensen Park on Puget Island. Anglers target salmon and catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia.
The Wahkiakum County Ferry, Oscar B, runs year-round between Puget Island and Westport, Oregon, carrying vehicles, bikes, and foot passengers, and makes a short, scenic side trip for families.

Summer is the prime RV window. June through August is the driest, sunniest, and warmest stretch, with August averaging the highest temperatures of the year and the least rain. This is also when waterfront sites at Skamokawa Vista Park book up quickly, especially on weekends, and reservations should be made well in advance.
Late spring and early fall are good shoulder seasons. May, September, and early October still see comfortable daytime temperatures, lighter crowds, and active wildlife along the sloughs. Afternoon wind off the Columbia is common year-round and is most noticeable at exposed riverfront sites.
Winter is wet. November through January are the rainiest months, with high tides and winter river levels that can push water onto low-lying riverfront properties. Some private and dispersed sites near the water become difficult to use in winter, while inland options like Clatskanie River Inn and RV Park typically remain open year-round.
How to book an RV site
Skamokawa Vista Park is managed by the Port of Wahkiakum County No. 2 and uses an online reservation system at the port's website, with sites available up to fourteen months in advance. All campers must check in upon arrival and pay for the site in full within 24 hours, and cancellations made less than seven days before arrival are charged for one night.
Clatskanie River Inn and RV Park books RV spaces directly through the inn, and the small RV section has limited spots that fill quickly in peak season. Private operators like RV Outdoor adventures and Cabins also take direct reservations through their own channels.
State forest options such as Clatsop State Forest - Northrup Creek Horse Camp and Tunerville - Department of Natural Resources are more rustic and follow the relevant state agency's rules, which can include first-come first-served sites and self-registration.
What to expect
Sites near the Columbia are exposed and breezy. Wind off the river is a near-daily feature, so awnings, mats, and lightweight gear should be staked or stowed. Riverfront pads can be ideal for ship watching and photography, while sites tucked into trees offer more shelter but less view.
Services on the island are limited. Cathlamet, just across the bridge, has a small grocery store, restaurants, fuel, and the Elochoman Slough Marina. Larger supplies, big-box stores, and major medical services are in Longview, Washington, about 45 minutes east.
Cell coverage is patchy in spots, especially down by the sloughs and on the Oregon-side back roads. Wildlife is abundant: expect deer on the roads at dawn and dusk, and keep food and trash secured at all campgrounds.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Puget%20Island%2C%20WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Puget Island, WA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Puget Island for nearly every rig on the platform. Washington State only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for single vehicles rated at 26,001 pounds or more, and virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license and you're ready to cross the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental covered if something happens during my trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Puget Island includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, giving you peace of mind whether you're parked along the Columbia River or rolling toward the Wahkiakum County Ferry landing. You choose your coverage level during the booking process (not the host), so you can pick what feels right for your trip. It isn't traditional insurance, but it's a real financial safety net that lets you focus on watching cargo ships glide past instead of worrying about the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Puget Island RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period built in right after you book. That means you can lock in your rig for the Puget Island Garage Sale weekend or a summer Columbia River trip without sweating a last-minute change of plans. Specific terms depend on how far in advance you cancel and whether unusual events are involved, so review the cancellation details on RVezy's site before you confirm. Book early for July and August (peak Columbia River fishing season) when Puget Island rentals fill up fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Puget Island RV trip?
Absolutely, and Puget Island is one of the most dog-friendly corners of southwest Washington. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Puget Island guests love, so just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible rigs. The island's flat, low-traffic country roads are made for long leashed walks, and you'll pass the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge where Columbian white-tailed deer roam. Nearby Skamokawa Vista Park welcomes leashed dogs in its camping areas (extra pet fee may apply), and the sandy Columbia River beach is a tail-wagger's dream. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and let them know your dog's size.
fws.gov/refuge/julia-butler-hansenCan the RV be delivered to my campground on Puget Island?
Yes, RV delivery in Puget Island is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters, and many local hosts offer it. They'll tow or drive the rig directly to your site at Skamokawa Vista Park, Elochoman Slough Marina, or a private riverfront spot, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. That means no white-knuckle moments crossing the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge in a big motorhome. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your destination, and confirm the fee (usually based on mileage from their location). It's the easiest way to start a Puget Island RV trip stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Puget%20Island%2C%20WashingtonHow far can I drive my RV rental from Puget Island?
Most Puget Island hosts set generous daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages as an add-on. That gives you plenty of room to explore. From Puget Island, you're about 30 minutes to Long Beach Peninsula, about 1 hour to Astoria, Oregon, around 1.5 hours to Portland, and roughly 2 hours to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Always check the mileage policy on the listing before booking, and if you're planning a bigger loop, ask the host about a flat-rate mileage upgrade. It usually saves money versus per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Puget%20Island%2C%20WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Puget Island?
You've got great options for RV camping in Puget Island and around Wahkiakum County. Skamokawa Vista Park (about 10 miles west) sits right on the Columbia River with full and partial hookup sites, hot showers, and beach access. Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet offers waterfront RV sites just across the bridge. County Line Park sits about 13 miles east along the river. A little farther inland, Seaquest State Park near Mount St. Helens makes a great overnight on the way to the volcano. Book Vista Park's riverfront sites early; they fill up for summer ship-watching weekends.
portofwahkiakum2.com/vista-park/When is the best time to visit Puget Island in an RV?
Late spring through early fall (May through early October) is the sweet spot for a Puget Island RV trip, with daytime highs typically in the upper 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit and the lowest rainfall of the year in July and August. Spring brings lush green farmland and active wildlife at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge, while September delivers warm days, salmon runs, and quieter campgrounds. Winters are mild but wet (lows around 35F, frequent rain), and many hosts still rent year-round for cozy storm-watching trips. Aim for mid-summer for the famous Puget Island community garage sale, an island-wide weekend event.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never driven an RV before. Is Puget Island a good place to start?
Honestly, Puget Island might be the most forgiving spot in Washington for first time renting an RV. The island's roads form an easy grid pattern, traffic is minimal, and speed limits stay low. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup walkthrough covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump valves, so you're never figuring it out alone. Pair that with delivery service from many local hosts and 24/7 roadside assistance included in your booking, and you're set. Do a slow practice loop around the island before crossing the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge back to Cathlamet.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Puget Island RV trip?
Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of your protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on Puget Island, the SR-4 corridor through Skamokawa, or near Long Beach. Roadside assistance covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or in-app message for quick troubleshooting on quirky systems (think water pump or awning). Cell service on Puget Island is generally workable thanks to towers across the Columbia in Oregon. Snap a photo of your host's emergency contact info during your walkthrough so it's always handy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across to Oregon from Puget Island?
Yes, traveling between Washington and Oregon in your rental is straightforward, and most hosts welcome it (just confirm during booking). The classic move is crossing the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge into Cathlamet, then driving east on SR-4 to Longview and over the Lewis and Clark Bridge into Oregon. Heads up: the Wahkiakum County Ferry (the Oscar B) from Puget Island to Westport, Oregon has vehicle size limits, so large motorhomes and trailers cannot ride it, confirm current restrictions before planning. Cross-border travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals. An RV road trip from Puget Island down US-30 to Astoria is one of the most scenic drives on the lower Columbia.
co.wahkiakum.wa.us/220/FerryWhat should I budget for fuel on a Puget Island RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, but it's easy to plan for. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (just your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 mpg loaded), Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes get 6 to 10 mpg. Washington state gas prices are among the highest in the country, so plan for that. Smart move: fill up in Longview or Kelso before crossing to Puget Island, as stations in Cathlamet can run a little higher. For a typical 3-night, 250-mile Wahkiakum County loop in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Puget Island?
For a Puget Island RV trip in summer, book your campground 2 to 4 months ahead, especially for riverfront sites at Skamokawa Vista Park (operated by the Port of Wahkiakum County District 2). Washington State Parks like Seaquest open reservations up to 9 months in advance through the official state parks reservation system, and popular summer weekends fill within hours. For shoulder season (April, May, late September, October), you can often grab a same-week reservation. Weekday arrivals are far easier to book, and you'll have the Columbia River beach practically to yourself for ship-watching and beachcombing.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are the driving conditions like on and around Puget Island?
Driving on Puget Island is about as easy as RV driving gets: flat farmland roads, very little traffic, and locals who actually wave as you pass. The Julia Butler Hansen Bridge from Cathlamet onto the island is a standard two-lane span; just take it slow with a tall rig and watch for wind gusts. SR-4 along the Columbia is a winding two-lane highway shared with logging trucks, so allow extra time and use pullouts. Watch for Columbian white-tailed deer near the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge, especially at dawn and dusk. Winter can bring fog and standing water on low spots after heavy rain, so check WSDOT for current conditions before you roll.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Puget Island?
Local campgrounds offer solid amenities for a comfortable stay. Skamokawa Vista Park has full hookup sites (water, electric, sewer), partial hookup sites (water/electric, 30 amp), hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, Wi-Fi, firewood for sale, and a sandy Columbia River beach. Elochoman Slough Marina offers waterfront sites with hookups and a boat launch. For fresh water fills and dump access between stays, Vista Park has a public dump station. Cell signal is generally workable across Puget Island, so streaming and remote work are doable, and the Marine Traffic app makes ship-watching genuinely fun from your campsite.
portofwahkiakum2.com/vista-park/What's typically included in a Puget Island RV rental?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental Puget Island guests book includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (furnace and AC), fresh/grey/black water tanks, and seatbelted seats for travel. Class C and Class A rigs often add a TV, sound system, generator, and outdoor awning. Many hosts include starter kits with linens, towels, kitchenware, and basic cleaning supplies, while some offer them as add-ons. When comparing a campervan rental Puget Island option to a Class C, remember campervans handle the island's bridge and country lanes more easily but sleep fewer people.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Puget%20Island%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include linen and towel kits ($25 to $50), kitchen packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Mileage policies vary; many Puget Island hosts include 100 free miles per day, with unlimited mileage available as a flat-rate upgrade for longer Columbia River trips. Standard pickup is at the host's location (often right on Puget Island or in nearby Cathlamet), with check-in around 2 PM and return by 11 AM. Bundle delivery, setup, and a generator package if you're heading to a partial-hookup site at Skamokawa Vista Park, it's worth every penny.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Puget%20Island%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy when you book, with the trip cost charged to your credit card. A refundable security deposit is held (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) before your trip and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, usually within a few days of drop-off. To avoid any deposit hassle, do a quick walkaround photo session at pickup and return, dump the tanks before returning, refuel to the level shown at pickup, and leave the interior clean. Keep your pickup and return photos handy so you've got everything documented for an easy Puget Island RV rental experience.
