Camping near Roslyn, Washington
Roslyn sits in the eastern foothills of the Washington Cascades in Kittitas County, about 80 miles east of Seattle off Interstate 90. The small former coal town is best known as the filming location for the TV series Northern Exposure, and it serves as a practical base for RV trips into the Cle Elum River valley, Lake Cle Elum, and the southern edge of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
The area mixes Washington State Parks, U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, and private RV parks. Lake Easton State Park, roughly 15 miles west off I-90, is the closest full-service state park and offers a mix of full-hookup, partial, and standard sites. Private options like Sun Country Golf And RV and Alpine Lakes Lodge add hookups, pull-throughs, and cabin alternatives for travelers who want amenities closer to town.
Winter shifts the map. French Cabin Sno-Park - Department of Natural Resources and Salmon La Sac Sno-Park - Department of Natural Resources become the main staging areas for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing once seasonal closures take effect on Forest Service campgrounds along Highway 903.
Things to do around Roslyn
Lake Cle Elum, just north of town on State Route 903, anchors most warm-weather trips. Boating is open across the reservoir, and Lake Easton State Park offers swimming, a boat launch with motors limited to 10 horsepower due to a shallow reservoir with submerged stumps, and shoreline access for fishing rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout. The Yakima River and Cle Elum River draw fly anglers and float trips.
Hiking and biking are concentrated in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, with the Waptus River Trail and other routes near Salmon La Sac feeding into the high country. The Coal Mines Trail links Roslyn, Ronald, and Cle Elum on a flat, family-friendly grade. The Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, a converted rail bed, runs through Lake Easton State Park and continues east toward Ellensburg.
In town, Roslyn keeps its Northern Exposure landmarks, a historic cemetery district, and a handful of cafés and breweries within walking distance.

The traditional camping window runs late May through mid-September. Forest Service campgrounds in the Cle Elum Ranger District, including Salmon La Sac, are closed to camping October through April and typically open for the summer season in late May. Lake Easton State Park keeps its campground open with a longer season, though loops, hookups, and the boat launch depend on snow conditions, and the watercraft launch usually opens in April.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm, dry days, low humidity, and the lowest rainfall of the year. Weekends at lakeside campgrounds book out months in advance, and wildfire restrictions on open flames are common from midsummer into early fall.
From December 1 through March 31, Lake Easton becomes a Sno-Park and Sno-Park permits are required, replacing the Discover Pass during that window. Salmon La Sac Sno-Park and French Cabin Sno-Park operate on a similar winter calendar, with groomed snowmobile and ski trails accessible from State Route 903 north of Cle Elum.
How to book a site
Lake Easton State Park is reserved through the Washington State Parks reservation system, online or by phone at 888-226-7688. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance, and summer weekends are competitive, with holiday dates and full-hookup sites often filling within minutes of release.
Forest Service campgrounds in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including Salmon La Sac and Cle Elum River, are booked on Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window that opens at 7 a.m. Pacific time on the day six months before arrival. A handful of sites in the area remain first-come, first-served.
Private parks such as Sun Country Golf And RV and Alpine Lakes Lodge are booked directly with the operator and generally accept reservations further out, including shoulder-season and winter stays. For winter parking at Salmon La Sac Sno-Park - Department of Natural Resources or French Cabin Sno-Park - Department of Natural Resources, buy a Washington State Sno-Park permit online from Washington State Parks or from a licensed vendor before arrival.
What to expect on site
Most campgrounds in the Roslyn and Cle Elum corridor sit in mixed-conifer forest between roughly 2,200 and 2,500 feet of elevation. Sites at Lake Easton State Park range from no-hookup tent spots to full-hookup pads, with some sites accommodating RVs up to about 60 feet, plus accessible restrooms, showers, and a dump station on site. Highway noise from I-90 and passing trains carries through the park, particularly in the upper loop, so earplugs are commonly recommended.
Forest Service sites near Salmon La Sac are more rustic, with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water, but no hookups. Cell coverage is patchy outside Roslyn and Cle Elum proper.
Black bears, deer, and porcupines are common in the surrounding forest, so food storage matters. Burn bans are routine in late summer, and at Lake Easton only self-contained gas or propane stoves and portable propane fire pits are allowed, with no charcoal or wood fires.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Roslyn,WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Roslyn?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Roslyn, WA. Washington State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers every rig on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and we'll verify your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval process really is, often same-day.

Kachess Campground on Lake Kachess has shaded lakeside sites perfect for paddleboards. Pro tip: most Forest Service campgrounds book through Recreation.gov six months out, so set a reminder for your dates.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234040When is the best time to visit Roslyn in an RV?
July through September is prime time for RV camping in Roslyn, with daytime highs in the mid 70s to low 80s and cool mountain evenings around 45 to 50 degrees, perfect for campfires. June can still be rainy but quiet on the trails, while late September delivers golden larches, fewer crowds, and shoulder-season pricing. Winters are genuinely snowy here (the area averages about 84 inches of snow annually), making Roslyn a hidden gem for winter RVing if you've got a four-season rig and want to ski Snoqualmie Pass. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental in Roslyn before April for the best August availability.
weather.gov/sew/I have never rented an RV before. Is Roslyn a good place to start?
Roslyn is one of the friendlier spots in Washington for a first time renting an RV. The town is small and walkable, traffic is light, and most campgrounds are within a 30 minute drive on well-maintained roads. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to use the propane, water, slide-outs, and dump valves, and they are a phone call away during your trip. If driving a big rig still feels intimidating, book a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: try a travel trailer or Class B campervan for your first family RV trip in Roslyn, both are easy to handle.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Roslyn RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 903 along Cle Elum Lake or your battery dies at Salmon La Sac, help is one call away around the clock. The team can dispatch a tow, tire change, jump start, or lockout service to remote spots throughout Kittitas County. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app if you have a quick question about a specific quirk of the rig. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it handy if you ever need to call for roadside help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Roslyn RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts allow interstate travel, so an RV road trip from Roslyn into Oregon, Idaho, or Montana is on the table. Popular routes include Roslyn to Glacier National Park (about 480 miles east), Roslyn to Crater Lake (around 380 miles south), and Roslyn to the Oregon Coast via Portland (about 250 miles to Portland). Crossing into Canada depends on the specific host and their insurance, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Roslyn RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A diesels run 7 to 10 MPG. Gas in Kittitas County typically runs about $0.20 to $0.40 below Seattle prices, with stations in Cle Elum (4 miles from Roslyn) being your last reliable fill-up before heading into the Cascades. For a typical 4-night loop covering 300 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $200 for fuel. Pro tip: top off at the Cle Elum Shell or Pilot before heading up Highway 903, prices climb at lake resorts.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Roslyn?
For summer weekends, book 4 to 6 months ahead, Roslyn's lakeside campgrounds fill up fast. Wish Poosh, Kachess, and Salmon La Sac all release reservations on Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window, so set a calendar alert for 7 AM Pacific exactly six months before your arrival date. Lake Easton State Park bookings open nine months out through the Washington State Parks reservation system. Midweek and shoulder-season trips (May, late September, October) are much easier and often walk-up friendly. Pro tip: if everything looks booked, message an RVezy host with delivery, many will set you up at a private property or boondocking spot they know about.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Roslyn?
Roslyn driving is genuinely easy compared to most mountain destinations. I-90 runs just south of town and is the main artery, well-maintained year-round and patrolled by WSDOT cameras you can check live. Highway 903 to Roslyn from Cle Elum is a flat, scenic 4 mile drive, and roads up to Cle Elum Lake and Salmon La Sac are paved with gentle grades. In winter, Snoqualmie Pass (45 miles west) sometimes requires traction tires or chains, so check WSDOT's pass report before traveling November through March. Pro tip: avoid the I-90 westbound corridor on Sunday afternoons in summer when Seattle weekenders are heading home, leave Monday morning instead.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpassesWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Roslyn?
Roslyn-area campgrounds offer a nice range, from full-hookup resort sites to rustic forest spots. Lake Easton State Park has 45 full hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50 amp), flush toilets, and hot showers. Suncadia-area private parks include cable and Wi-Fi. Forest Service campgrounds like Wish Poosh and Salmon La Sac have potable water spigots, vault toilets, and fire rings but no hookups, so you'll dry camp. The closest RV dump station is at Lake Easton State Park, and you can also dump at the Cle Elum Sno-Park area. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank in Cle Elum before heading up to lake campgrounds, it saves a trip back down.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lake-easton-state-parkWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Roslyn?
Roslyn rentals come ready for adventure. Most travel trailers and motorhome rentals in Roslyn sleep 4 to 8 with real mattresses, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and dinettes that convert to extra beds. Class C and Class A motorhomes include seatbelted seating for travel, and many have onboard generators, TVs, and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the Cascades, so don't count on streaming at Kachess Lake, but cell service is decent in Roslyn proper. Pro tip: ask your host if linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are included, many provide full kits to save you packing.
rvia.org/news-insights/rv-typesWhat add-ons and pickup options do Roslyn hosts offer?
Roslyn hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, paddleboards, and outdoor patio mats, perfect for lakeside hangs at Cle Elum Lake. Most hosts offer pickup at their home base within 15 miles of Roslyn or Cle Elum, and many will deliver to Suncadia, Salmon La Sac, or your campsite for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with paid overage options, and unlimited mileage rigs do exist on the platform. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator if you're heading somewhere without hookups, the convenience is worth every dollar.
fs.usda.gov/recmain/okawen/recreationHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Roslyn RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card right at booking, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after trip end, assuming no damage. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, take time-stamped photos and videos of the interior and exterior, and return the RV with the agreed-upon fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: also check the dump tank status, many hosts charge a flat fee if tanks are not emptied.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Roslyn during the winter for skiing?
Yes, and it is an underrated way to do a Cascades ski trip. Roslyn winters are snowy with temperatures often in the teens and 20s, so look for a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable propane furnace, just message hosts to confirm winter-ready features. Park at a campground with shore power so you are not running the furnace off batteries; Lake Easton State Park stays open year-round with electric hookups. From there it is about 30 minutes to The Summit at Snoqualmie. Pro tip: ask your host for tire chains and a heated water hose, both make winter RVing in Roslyn genuinely comfortable.
