Campgrounds near Satsop
Satsop sits in Grays Harbor County along the East Fork Satsop River, roughly midway between Olympia and the Pacific coast on US Highway 12. The surrounding area is classic western Washington river country: cedar, Douglas fir, and moss-draped forest fed by heavy winter rainfall. RV travelers use Satsop as a base for fishing the Satsop and Chehalis river systems, exploring the southern Olympic Peninsula, and reaching the beaches at Grays Harbor in under an hour.
Schafer State Park is a 119-acre camping park on the Satsop River, midway between Olympia and Ocean Park, with a mix of standard and partial-hookup sites. Lake Sylvia State Park sits in dense temperate rainforest just one mile from the small town of Montesano, halfway between Olympia and the Pacific coast, centered on a lake originally created by a dam built around 1909.
Other options near Satsop include Elma RV Park, a full-hookup park on State Route 12 in Elma; Friends Landing RV Park, a Port of Grays Harbor facility on the Chehalis River near Montesano; and Porter Creek - Department of Natural Resources, a primitive forest campground inside Capitol State Forest.
Things to do near Satsop
Fishing drives much of the area's recreation. Schafer State Park is known for its fishing opportunities, including sea-run cutthroat trout in summer, salmon in the fall and steelhead in late winter. Wading and swimming in the shallow water make it an attractive site for family gatherings, and short interpretive trails wind through the forest.
Lake Sylvia State Park features a large swimming and fishing lake, a roughly 5-mile loop trail that rolls over wetlands and a small covered bridge, and a walk around the lake that reveals a dam from the early 1900s. Kayaks and paddle boards are available for rent from June through September. Friends Landing RV Park has an improved trail around Lake Quigg and boat launches on both Lake Quigg and the Chehalis River.
For off-road riders and hikers, Porter Creek - Department of Natural Resources opens onto Capitol State Forest's extensive trail network, with a walk to Porter Falls from the campground.

Western Washington's wet season runs from late fall through early spring. Heavy rain swells the Satsop and Chehalis rivers, can affect low-lying riverside sites, and turns forest-road campgrounds muddy. Steelhead fishing peaks in late winter, but many state park reservation windows have not yet opened and some facilities run on reduced winter schedules.
Spring brings rising temperatures and the start of the main reservation season at the state parks. At Lake Sylvia, individual campsites are reservable from April 1 to September 30, and the park remains open year-round for camping and day use on a first-come basis outside that window.
Summer is dry, warm, and busy. State park sites at Schafer and Lake Sylvia fill weekends well in advance, and the Capitol State Forest DNR campgrounds see heavy ATV and motorcycle use. Fall offers cooler temperatures, salmon runs, and quieter campgrounds before Porter Creek closes at the end of November and winter reduces activity.

Really great RV that was easy to drive and worked really well. Lots of space with the pop out, AC blows cold and the heating is warm. Was very comfortable the whole time. Steve the host is great and took the time to show me how everything worked in detail and had me completely comfortable to go on my trip. Can’t recommend this rental enough. Thank you.

Don and his wife were great hosts! The RV was in great condition, ran well, and they were both easy to communicate with. We were happy to see they even provided amenities such as kitchen appliances, plates, utensils, chairs and a BBQ. We would definitely go through them on our next trip if the RV is available!

The Leggs were really great and we appreciated the supplies that were included. There were camp chairs and even an outdoor grill.

Booking and reservations for Satsop campgrounds
Washington State Parks operates a single reservation system for both Schafer State Park and Lake Sylvia State Park. Reservations can be made online or by calling (888) CAMPOUT or (888) 226-7688, and a Discover Pass is required for day-use parking at state parks.
DNR campgrounds operate differently. Porter Creek Campground is open from May 1 through late November on a first come, first served basis, campers must register upon arrival, and the camping limit is 7 days total within a 365-day period. A Discover Pass is also required to park.
Friends Landing RV Park and Elma RV Park are booked directly through their operators rather than the state system. Friends Landing is managed by the Port of Grays Harbor, while Elma RV Park sits along State Route 12 with full hookups.
What to expect at Satsop-area campgrounds
Sites vary widely in size and service level. Schafer State Park has 29 standard campsites, nine partial-hookup sites, one hiker-biker site, one dump station, and one restroom with showers, with a maximum site length of 40 feet. Lake Sylvia State Park has 31 standard campsites, 4 partial-hookup sites, one dump station, three restrooms, and six showers, plus four primitive walk-in sites and two primitive hiker/biker sites.
Full-hookup RV travelers will find the most amenities at Elma RV Park and Friends Landing. Porter Creek is primitive, with vault toilets, no water hookups or modern facilities, and first-come, first-served sites. Gravel road access is common at the DNR site, cell service is spotty in the forested locations, and mud is likely after heavy rain.

How much does an RV rental in Satsop cost, and how can I save?
RV rental in Satsop is affordable for such a scenic gateway to the Olympic Peninsula. On RVezy, you typically see travel trailers from around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $160 to $260, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400. For cheap RV rental Satsop options, book mid-week, target shoulder months like late April or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Use the price filter and sort by lowest price to find the best deals. Pro tip: Satsop hosts often include extras like camp chairs or starter kits, so stock up on groceries in Aberdeen or Elma before heading into Olympic National Forest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Satsop,WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Satsop, WA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Satsop, Washington. There is no special endorsement or commercial driver's license required, even for larger Class A motorhomes that handle US-101 and the Wynoochee Valley Road. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID inside the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit. Verification usually clears quickly, leaving you free to plan hikes around Lake Wynoochee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Satsop?
Every RV rental in Satsop, WA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you are covered from the moment you pull onto US-12. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real peace of mind on Olympic Peninsula roads. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, not the host, so you control how much extra cushion you want. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it is robust support designed for peer-to-peer rentals. Pro tip: pick a higher tier for forest-road trips up to Wynoochee Lake where gravel and low branches are part of the adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Satsop RV booking?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so a quick change of heart will not sting. After that, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. The full current policy is shown on RVezy's Help Center before you confirm, and the customer support team can help with extenuating circumstances like natural disasters, which matter during Pacific Northwest winter storm season. The takeaway: you can lock in a great rig for your Satsop RV trip during peak summer demand without feeling trapped if life pivots.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Satsop?
Absolutely, and Satsop is a great destination for dogs. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Satsop, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see rigs that welcome your pup. Once you are on the road, Schafer State Park along the East Fork Satsop River allows leashed dogs on trails and campsites, and Olympic National Forest trails near Lake Wynoochee are dog-friendly too. Note that Olympic National Park itself restricts pets on most trails, so plan park days carefully. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about pet bedding, many Satsop hosts are dog owners themselves and happy to accommodate.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/schafer-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Satsop?
Yes, RV delivery in Satsop is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig to Schafer State Park, Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano, or private property along the Wynoochee Valley, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this, with delivery fees usually based on distance. Pro tip: ask for delivery to your first campground, then use the host's setup as a tutorial before driving the rig yourself later in the week.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lake-sylvia-state-parkHow does mileage work, and can I get unlimited miles for a Satsop RV trip?
Mileage is flexible because each host sets their own policy, and you will see the exact daily mileage allowance and per-mile overage on every listing before you book. Some Satsop-area hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is fantastic for longer Olympic Peninsula loops. For reference: Satsop to Lake Quinault is about 45 miles, to Hurricane Ridge roughly 125 miles, to Mount Rainier's Nisqually entrance about 110 miles, and to Seattle around 100 miles. Add a few hundred miles for a peninsula loop. Pro tip: estimate your total mileage before booking and filter listings accordingly, an unlimited-mileage rig often pencils out cheaper than paying overages on a tightly capped one.
nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/driving-distances-and-times.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Satsop for an RV?
You have terrific options within 30 minutes of Satsop. Schafer State Park sits along the East Fork Satsop River with utility hookups and shaded sites under big-leaf maples. Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano (about 10 miles southwest) offers lakeside standard sites with a dump station and is excellent for paddling. Coho Campground in Olympic National Forest, on Wynoochee Lake, is a quieter option with drinking water and a dump station. For full hookups, private parks in nearby Elma are a popular choice. Pro tip: pair an electric-hookup night at Schafer with a rustic night near Wynoochee Lake for the full RV camping Satsop experience.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/schafer-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Satsop?
Late June through September is prime time in Satsop, with daytime highs around 70 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, long evenings, and the driest weather of the year, perfect for hiking the Olympic Peninsula. May and early October are smart-money shoulder seasons: lower nightly rates, fewer crowds at Lake Quinault, and lush green forests after spring rains. Winter (December through February) is mild but wet, with temperatures in the 35 to 50 range and frequent rain. If you love quiet rivers and storm-watching on the coast about 40 miles west at Westport, a winter campervan rental Satsop trip is genuinely magical. Pro tip: book July dates by April, the best rigs go fast.
weather.gov/sew/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Satsop?
You will do great, and Satsop is an ideal place for first time renting an RV. The roads around town are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked, with US-12 and US-101 providing easy two-lane highways once you are comfortable. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, awning, water systems, and dump procedure, so you are never guessing. You can also message the host beforehand from the listing page with any question. Pro tip: do a practice loop on the quiet stretches of Wynoochee Valley Road before heading up to Lake Cushman or Hurricane Ridge, and you will feel like a pro by day two.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time-travel/travel-alertsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-101, a dead battery at Schafer State Park, or a lockout at Lake Sylvia is one phone call away from getting handled. The renter protection plan covers most damage scenarios, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip if you need help coordinating with your host. Cell coverage is solid along US-12 and most of US-101, though it can get thin deep in Olympic National Forest near Wynoochee Lake. Pro tip: screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact info before driving into low-signal areas.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Satsop?
Satsop is a perfect launchpad for some of the Pacific Northwest's best routes. A classic RV road trip from Satsop is the Olympic Peninsula Loop on US-101: roughly 330 miles round-trip past Lake Quinault (about 45 miles), Forks (about 90 miles), Hurricane Ridge (about 125 miles), and Sequim. Head west about 40 miles to Westport and Ocean Shores for beach camping and razor clamming. Drive south about 95 miles to Mount St. Helens for volcanic landscapes. Or push north about 100 miles to Seattle and the ferries. For a cross-state run, Mount Rainier's Nisqually entrance is around 110 miles. Pro tip: tackle the Olympic Loop counterclockwise so you finish along the coast at sunset.
nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/driving-distances-and-times.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Satsop RV trip?
Fuel is manageable in this part of Washington. Expect Class B campervans to get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 mpg, larger Class A rigs about 7 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg combined). Washington gas prices typically run higher than the national average, with the nearest stations in Elma and Montesano just minutes from Satsop. A typical 500-mile Olympic Peninsula loop in a Class C runs roughly $200 to $300 in fuel depending on the rig and current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Elma before heading up Wynoochee Valley Road, prices climb at the small stations closer to the national forest.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Satsop?
For peak summer dates (July and August) at popular spots like Schafer State Park and Lake Sylvia State Park, book through the Washington State Parks reservation system as soon as your window opens, typically nine months in advance. Olympic National Forest campgrounds like Coho Campground on Wynoochee Lake book through Recreation.gov, typically six months out. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, two to four weeks ahead is usually fine. Pro tip: if weekend sites are full, try Sunday through Thursday arrivals, you will often find prime riverside sites at Schafer with no competition, and host pickup logistics are easier mid-week too.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are driving conditions like around Satsop and the Olympic Peninsula?
Driving around Satsop is refreshingly easy, US-12 and US-101 are well-maintained two-lane highways with gentle grades through the Chehalis and Wynoochee valleys. Once you head deeper into Olympic National Forest, expect narrow forest service roads with occasional gravel and tight curves (Wynoochee Valley Road becomes Forest Road 22), so take it slow in larger rigs. Wet pavement is the most common challenge, the Olympic Peninsula gets serious rain even in shoulder seasons, so allow extra braking distance. Watch for elk and deer at dawn and dusk along US-12. Pro tip: if your RV is over 21 feet, consider parking at Heart O' the Hills and using a smaller vehicle for the final climb to Hurricane Ridge.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time-travel/travel-alertsWhat hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Satsop offer?
You will find a healthy mix. Schafer State Park has electric and water hookups at many sites plus a dump station. Lake Sylvia State Park offers standard sites with a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Coho Campground in Olympic National Forest is rustic with drinking water and trash service but no hookups, with a dump station on site. Private parks in Elma typically offer full hookups (30/50 amp, water, sewer) and Wi-Fi. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks in Montesano before heading to any forest service campground, it is the last reliable spot for both before you climb into the Olympics.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lake-sylvia-state-parkWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Satsop?
More comfort than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental in Satsop comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a kitchen with a three-burner stove, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most rigs have a roof AC, furnace, and propane for cooking, plus seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for boondocking, a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on (handy because cell signal fades near Wynoochee Lake). Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts, just towed. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count for your group size, then read the listing's amenities checklist, hosts often include camp chairs, BBQs, and starter kits.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Satsop,WashingtonWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
RVezy hosts in Satsop offer a great menu of add-ons: linen and bedding kits, kitchen packages, generators, propane fills, portable BBQs, bike racks, kayaks, camp chairs, and even pre-stocked groceries. Fees are listed clearly on each listing, so there are no surprises at pickup. Pickup typically happens at the host's location near Satsop, Elma, or Montesano, where you will get a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering driving, dumping, water, propane, and the generator. Drop-off is at the same location with fuel and tanks per the host's instructions (usually full fuel, empty waste tanks). Pro tip: book delivery if you would rather skip driving back, many hosts will retrieve the rig from your final campground for a flat fee.
rvezy.com/how-it-worksHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Satsop, WA?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay the trip total by credit card when you book, and the funds are held safely until your trip starts, so both you and the host are protected. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not charged, and released after drop-off assuming no damage or major cleaning issues. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV's interior, exterior, tanks, and fuel level at both pickup and return. Pro tip: do this together with the host so you are aligned, it makes the post-trip release of your deposit fast and friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I drive my Satsop RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate travel is often possible, just confirm with your host before booking. Most hosts allow trips throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and beyond, which is great for routes south to the Oregon Coast or east to Mount Rainier and Leavenworth. Travel into Canada (think Vancouver Island ferries from Port Angeles, about 130 miles from Satsop) requires the host's written approval and confirmation that insurance extends across the border, so message them through the listing before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if a British Columbia loop interests you, filter for hosts who note Canada-friendly travel and bring your passport plus proof of vehicle authorization to the border.
