Campgrounds and RV parks near Southworth, WA

The Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry is the area's headline activity. Walk-ons and vehicles both work, and the crossing links Southworth with Vashon Island and West Seattle in about 30 to 40 minutes total. The terminal area is also a common launch point for kayakers heading out into Puget Sound. Manchester State Park adds military history and shoreline walking. Visitors can explore the 1901 brick torpedo warehouse and Battery Mitchell overlooking Rich Passage, along with hiking, biking, picnicking, boating, kayaking, fishing, scuba diving, and wildlife viewing. Horseshoe pits and a volleyball area sit within the campground. At Illahee State Park, a pier on Port Orchard Bay is set up for fishing and crabbing, with shellfish and oyster harvesting available in season. A Washington shellfish or fishing license is required, and boat launching from the ramp requires a favorable tide.

The Kitsap Peninsula follows the standard Puget Sound pattern: dry, mild summers and wet, cool winters. Bremerton, the nearest climate reference, records around 1298 mm (51 in) of annual precipitation, with a clear dry stretch from June through August and the wettest months running November through January. Snow is uncommon and usually short-lived at sea level. Camping peak runs mid-May through September, when weekends at the closer state parks fill quickly. Reservation practices differ by park. At Manchester State Park, sites are reservable on a 9-month rolling window for arrivals between May 15 and September 15, and campsites are first come, first served between September 16 and May 14. Illahee State Park is open year-round and accepts reservations through the same state system. Shoulder seasons offer easier availability and cool, damp weather. Both Manchester and Illahee stay open year-round, but expect wet sites, short daylight, and possible windstorms from late fall through winter. Verify current fire restrictions before arrival, since burn bans are common in July and August.

State park sites near Southworth are wooded and often uneven. Manchester State Park has 35 standard campsites and 15 partial-hookup sites with electric and water, accommodating RVs up to 60 feet on limited sites, plus a dump station near the entrance. Illahee State Park is tighter, with 23 sites including 4 tent-only, and roughly 19 sites able to fit RVs in the 20 to 30 foot range; the park is open year-round and includes a dump station. Expect dense conifer canopy, limited satellite reception, and paved but sloped pads. Roads inside both parks are narrow and hilly, so most RVs will need extra blocking to level out. Private parks near Gig Harbor and Poulsbo offer full hookups, pull-throughs, and easier big-rig access, trading forest setting for convenience.
