Camping near Stevenson, Washington
Stevenson sits on the north bank of the Columbia River in Skamania County, inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The town is roughly an hour east of Portland via State Route 14 and the Bridge of the Gods, which makes it a common RV base for exploring both the Washington and Oregon sides of the gorge. Elevations in the immediate area run from river level to well over 1,000 feet, producing damp forested campgrounds on the slopes and drier, windier sites along the water.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Port of Cascade Locks Campground and Cascade Locks / Portland East KOA Holiday sit just across the river in Oregon, while The Resort At Skamania Coves and Columbia Gorge Getaways offer riverside and glamping-style stays on the Washington side. Lewis and Clark Campground and RV Park adds another full-hookup option a short drive west toward the Portland metro.
Public land camping in Gifford Pinchot National Forest and at Beacon Rock State Park rounds out the choices for travelers wanting developed state or federal sites.
Things to do around Stevenson
The gorge is the main attraction. Beacon Rock State Park, a short drive west of Stevenson, has a switchback trail to the summit of the 848-foot basalt monolith and connects to the longer Hamilton Mountain loop. Waterfall hikes on the Oregon side, including Multnomah Falls, are reachable via the Bridge of the Gods. Skamania Lodge nearby offers golf, zip lining, ax throwing, and forest trails for visitors looking for on-site activities.
The Columbia is a well-known windsurfing and kiteboarding corridor, with launches near Home Valley and around Hood River. Anglers target salmon and steelhead on the Columbia, Wind, and Klickitat rivers. Carson Hot Springs, wineries in the White Salmon area, and the Bonneville Dam visitor center are all within a short drive of town.

The best window for camping around Stevenson is late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, when weather is most favorable and warm days suit water activities on the Columbia. July and August are the driest, busiest months, and popular gorge campgrounds fill weeks in advance for summer weekends.
Shoulder seasons bring trade-offs. Spring delivers full waterfalls and wildflowers but wet trails and cool nights. Fall offers quieter campgrounds and color in the deciduous canyons, with heavy rain returning by November. Beacon Rock State Park camping runs roughly April through October, and many nearby forest service campgrounds also operate seasonally.
Winter camping is possible at a handful of private RV parks with full hookups, but state park campground loops and forest service sites frequently close or drop to limited services. Gorge wind is a year-round factor, and summer fire restrictions in Gifford Pinchot National Forest can limit campfires and generator use during dry stretches.
How to book
Washington State Parks sites, including Beacon Rock, are reserved through washington.goingtocamp.com and open up to nine months in advance. Oregon State Parks campgrounds across the river use the Oregon State Parks reservation portal. National forest campgrounds in Gifford Pinchot and Mt. Hood are booked through Recreation.gov, typically six months in advance.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Port of Cascade Locks Campground, Cascade Locks / Portland East KOA Holiday, The Resort At Skamania Coves, Columbia Gorge Getaways, and Lewis and Clark Campground and RV Park each take direct bookings through their own websites or phone. For summer weekends and any holiday period, book RV sites eight to twelve weeks out. First-come, first-served forest service sites can fill by early afternoon on peak summer days.
What to expect on the ground
Access to Stevenson is straightforward via State Route 14 on the Washington side and I-84 on the Oregon side, connected by the Bridge of the Gods. The bridge is narrow and has a toll, so drivers of large rigs should confirm width and height clearance before crossing.
Train noise is the single most common surprise for first-time gorge campers. Rail tracks run parallel to many riverside campsites, with freight trains passing regularly through the night. Sites set back from the river, such as those in the hills above town, are noticeably quieter.
Expect wind, especially at exposed riverside sites, and pack layers for cool evenings even in midsummer. Cell service is reliable in Stevenson itself but drops in the surrounding forest. Groceries, propane, and dump stations are available in town and in Cascade Locks across the river.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Stevenson, WA
How much does an RV rental in Stevenson cost?
RV rental in Stevenson is an affordable alternative to lodges in the Columbia River Gorge. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run roughly $150 to $225, and Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $325 nightly, with prices peaking from June through September when Gorge tourism is busiest. To find a cheap RV rental in Stevenson, look at midweek dates, book in the April or October shoulder months, and use the price filter to match your budget. Pro tip: many hosts within an hour of Stevenson offer multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a 4 or 5 night Gorge trip often costs less per night than a quick weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stevenson%2C%20WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Stevenson, WA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Stevenson, WA. The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) confirms that recreational vehicle drivers are exempt from Commercial Driver License (CDL) requirements when traveling for personal, non-commercial use, no matter the size of the rig. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the approval process moves, often within a few hours.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Stevenson rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Stevenson includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the Gorge views instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout (the renter selects the plan, not the host). If you get a flat on State Route 14 near Beacon Rock or a battery dies at a Stevenson trailhead, one phone call gets help dispatched. Pro tip: snap a few photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff. It is a simple habit that makes the whole process smoother.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Stevenson RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have time to confirm plans like Beacon Rock State Park campsites or Bonneville Dam tours before fully committing. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and host cancellations are refunded or covered with travel credits by RVezy. Pro tip: lock in your RV first while your dates are still open, then book your campground, since RVs in the Gorge book out faster than most Washington State Parks sites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Stevenson?
Yes, the Gorge is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Washington, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Stevenson is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome dogs, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome on most trails at Beacon Rock State Park and along the Columbia River. Pro tip: pack a towel and a brush. Trails like Hardy Falls and Hamilton Mountain are gorgeous but muddy in spring, and a clean dog means a happy host at dropoff.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/beacon-rock-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Stevenson?
Yes, RV delivery in Stevenson is one of the smartest ways to start your Gorge trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts within an hour of town deliver to Beacon Rock State Park, Home Valley Campground, and other nearby parks, then set up the RV, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything before they leave. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask your host to deliver to a full-hookup site so you skip the dump station learning curve on day one and head straight to dinner in downtown Stevenson.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038108654-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Stevenson?
Stevenson sits in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, so a Stevenson RV trip can reach incredible destinations without long highway days. Hood River, OR is about 20 miles east, Portland is roughly 45 miles west on State Route 14, Mount Hood and Trillium Lake are about 60 miles southeast, Mount St. Helens is around 75 miles northwest, and the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach is roughly 130 miles. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a multi-stop loop. Pro tip: message the host before booking and share your route. They will often tailor the mileage package to fit.
fs.usda.gov/crgnsaWhere are the best campgrounds near Stevenson?
The best campgrounds near Stevenson are right out your door. Beacon Rock State Park has RV-friendly campsites with hookups that fit larger rigs and is open year-round. Home Valley Campground sits directly on the Columbia River with a sandy beach and shaded sites just minutes east of town. Timberlake Campground and RV Park offers full-hookup sites tucked into a quiet forested property off SR-14. Skamania Coves and other private parks along the river provide year-round full hookups with sweeping river views. Pro tip: book Beacon Rock up to 9 months ahead at washington.goingtocamp.com, since hookup sites disappear fast for summer weekends.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/beacon-rock-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Stevenson?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for RV camping in Stevenson. June through September brings warm, dry days with highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s F and very little rain, ideal for hiking Beacon Rock or kiteboarding along the Columbia. May and October are local favorites, with fewer crowds, wildflowers or fall color, and cool nights in the 40s. Winter is wet and mild (highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s), and many parks like Beacon Rock stay open year-round for a quiet off-season Gorge escape. Pro tip: aim for mid-September. Summer heat has eased, salmon are running at Bonneville Dam, and campground availability opens up.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=Stevenson%2CWAI have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Stevenson?
You will be fine, and Stevenson is one of the easier places to be a first time RV renter. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering driving, leveling, water, propane, and the dump valves, so you are never figuring it out alone. State Route 14 from Vancouver to Stevenson is a calm two-lane scenic byway, much friendlier than I-84 across the river. If city driving makes you nervous, choose Delivery and skip the freeway entirely. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer or smaller Class C (24 to 28 feet) for your first Gorge trip. They handle Stevenson's gentle curves and tight campground loops without any drama.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something breaks down during my trip near Stevenson?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you have a flat on SR-14, a dead battery at the Beacon Rock trailhead, or a mechanical issue heading up to Mount Hood, one phone call gets help on the way. For non-emergency questions like switching from shore power to generator, your host is just a message away and knows the rig inside and out. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone the day you pick up, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and plate. It speeds up dispatch if you ever need it.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Stevenson RV rental into Oregon or up to Canada?
Crossing into Oregon is part of the fun. The Bridge of the Gods drops you into Cascade Locks in about 5 minutes, and you can continue to Hood River, Multnomah Falls, or Mount Hood with no extra paperwork. A trip up to British Columbia is possible on many rentals, but because cross-border travel affects insurance, confirm with your host before booking by messaging them directly from the listing. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: for a Washington-Oregon Gorge loop, ask your host about returning via Hood River and Cascade Locks for a different set of waterfall stops.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Stevenson RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than most renters expect. Class B campervans and smaller travel trailer setups typically get 14 to 20 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Washington gas prices tend to run a bit higher than the national average, so a fill-up across the river in Cascade Locks, OR can sometimes save a few cents per gallon. For a typical 4-night Stevenson loop with day trips to Hood River and Multnomah Falls, expect roughly $120 to $250 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: top off in Stevenson before heading deeper into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Stevenson?
For summer Gorge weekends, book your campground the moment your RV is locked in. Washington State Parks (including Beacon Rock) take reservations up to 9 months in advance at washington.goingtocamp.com or by calling 888-226-7688, and RV utility sites fill within minutes for July and August weekends. Private parks like Timberlake and Skamania Coves typically open bookings 6 to 12 months out. Pro tip: if you strike out at Beacon Rock, try Home Valley Campground or look just across the river at Cascade Locks. Midweek (Sunday through Thursday) is often wide open even in peak season, so flexible dates equal serious savings and better sites.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What should I know about driving an RV around the Columbia River Gorge?
Driving in and around Stevenson is mostly relaxed two-lane cruising, but the Gorge has a few quirks worth knowing. State Route 14 is scenic and slower than I-84 across the river, with short tunnels near Cape Horn (watch your height clearance, most standard RVs under 13 feet 6 inches clear easily). The Bridge of the Gods is a metal-grate toll bridge where you will go slow and steady. Winds through the Gorge can gust 30 to 50 mph, especially near Hood River, so grip the wheel and avoid towing tall trailers on red-flag wind days. Pro tip: check WSDOT cameras before you roll. Winter brings occasional snow on SR-14 east of Stevenson.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time/traveler-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Stevenson?
Most campgrounds near Stevenson are well equipped for a smooth RV stay. Beacon Rock State Park offers hookup sites plus showers and flush toilets. Home Valley Campground has running water, restrooms, a beach, and a playground. Timberlake offers a dump station, coin showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a small store. Private parks along the river feature full hookups, laundry, and clean restrooms year-round. For filling fresh water or dumping tanks between stops, Timberlake and the Skamania County Fairgrounds both have public dump stations. Pro tip: cell service in the Gorge can be spotty, so download offline maps and a podcast or two before you leave the Stevenson Safeway parking lot.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/beacon-rock-state-parkWhat is actually inside a typical RV rental in Stevenson?
More than you would think. A typical motorhome rental in Stevenson comes ready to live in: real beds (queen or king in many Class Cs, plus convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via furnace and roof A/C, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking nights. Wi-Fi is not standard, but many hosts offer a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group and read the listing's amenities carefully. A campervan rental in Stevenson is perfect for two, while a Class C easily handles a family of five with room for s'mores supplies.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stevenson%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Stevenson?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for a Stevenson RV trip include linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, portable BBQs, and even kayaks or paddleboards (this is the Columbia, after all). Pickup is usually at the host's home base near Stevenson, Vancouver, or Portland, with the option to upgrade to Delivery so the RV meets you at Beacon Rock or Home Valley Campground. Mileage policies vary, with some hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and others providing unlimited mileage on Gorge-area trips. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you are camping without hookups, otherwise you can usually skip it.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stevenson%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy Stevenson rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is placed on hold (not charged) shortly before your trip, with the amount depending on the RV and your chosen protection level. As long as you return the rig on time, undamaged, and following the host's mileage, generator, and cleaning terms, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid surprises, refill fuel and propane before dropoff, empty the tanks if required, and snap return photos. Pro tip: review the listing's add-on fees (cleaning, dump, extra miles) before you book so your final total has zero surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Stevenson during winter, and is it warm enough?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Stevenson is a real and underrated adventure. Many hosts list 4-season rigs with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups that handle the Gorge's wet, mild winters (typically 28 to 45 F with occasional snow flurries). Year-round campgrounds like Beacon Rock State Park and Timberlake keep their full hookups running through the off-season. Winter is when you will get the Gorge nearly to yourself, with bald eagles along the river, Bonneville Dam fish ladders in action, and steaming soaks at Carson Hot Springs Resort just up the road. Pro tip: ask your host to confirm the rig is winterized for active use and that the freshwater hose is heated or insulated.
